I drive a 2004 wrx sedan with 2L engine and 16G turbo. Has all the typical Stage 2 mods plus additional mods to support the 16G (turboback exhaust, uppipe, intake, intercooler, fuel pump, injectors, ebc, unequal header, Accessport Protune). Dyno numbers are just North of 270 whp and torque.
I've never truly been happy with the 16G lag on the 2L engine. I loved my car when it was a pure Stage 2 WRX with the TD04 turbo - the pull off the line due to the quick spool up was wonderful. Now, with the 16G, I struggle to keep up with Honda Civics until I reach 3K RPMs. It's just a dog from 0-3K. I have been researching upgrades to get back that down low torque, but also keep the high end power of a larger turbo. The only thing that seems to make sense is to go to a hybrid build with combustion chamber modification. I know that everyone recommends a 18G or 20G turbo minimum with the 2.5L block, but I already have the 16G, so I want to give it a try before I upgrade the turbo. My ultimate goal is to bring back the power I had in my Stage 2 car from 0-3K RPMS, and keep the high end power that I currently have with the 16G. Do you believe I will be able to achieve this with a solid hybrid build? Let me know what you think. Thanks.

I have almost that exact setup in mine, its a hybrid with 16g on front mount. you can definitly tell a huge difference in the low end torque! I have jumped a 400+ hp m3 off the start and never looked back. would recomend front mount to be able to sustain the high end power better. With a gimmick front mount I had about the same lag as the top mount I had but much smoother and more power top end.

db_amn: do you have dyno graph for your car? I'm surprised that you can hang with an M3 off the line, but I trust that you can. Was your car ever a stage 2 car with the old TD04 turbo? If so, how does the initial pull now compare to a Stage 2 car?

When I bought the car it had a vf30 so no I dont know how the td04 is. I dont have a dyno either, was running on actually a pretty conservative base map! Ended up with a piston failure before I could get it fully tuned. My fault for driving it so hard on a base map, lol. Getting ready to pull it and do a full build on it. Doug from Top Speed had estimated it to be able to be around 290-300hp and about 370 ftlbs if tuned, so yeah the torque is rediculous!

Drive it in your power band and you'll win races.
2L, 8.0:1 CR, long gears, not the best combination for guys who want "low end" grunt. Stroker or hybrid build will both have more torque down low. Different geared tranny also helps get the car moving. |
