Default does it matter where an exhaust resonator is placed?

i have an 04 wrx .. fully catless. when the boost kicks in, it gets a bit raspy. my exhaust consists of a catless up pipe, 4" turboxs downpipe, 3" turboxs straight pipe/stealthback mid and 2.5" turboxs axleback.

i already bought a 3" straight through resonator, so my question is, does it matter how far forward or backward i mount the resonator? my idea was to take the turboxs catless straight pipe, cut it, and mount the resonator up front there.. is this a dumb idea? should i just mount it toward the back of the midpipe instead?

it helps to locate it in the exhaust pipe.

did you eventually install the resonator? did it help to make it quiet?

I installed a glasspack on one of my loud exhausts and it did nothing.

The engineer in me says it matters because how pressure waves resonate through pipes and it will probably be .001%

Even if it does matter, there's only 1 spot a resonator can be placed on our exhaust systems.

When they designed the car, they calculated the wavelength and the amplitude of the vibration of the exhaust past the flex point (the donut), there is some kind of resonance, which creates the droning and raspiness, then they determined the location of the resonator, but adjusted it due to packaging.
So yes, it needs to be where the factory placed it.
If you weld it into the axleback, it may have a different effect.
If you still have the flex point with the donut, but weld the resonator upstream of the donut, it may have a different effect as well.

well if we're talking about resonant effects (and i don't disagree that we should) then changing the diameter of the pipe anywhere along its length will also change the frequency and/or optimal location.

Yes it does matter but there are many variables that dictate where it should go. Thats why we leave it up to reputable companies to engineer a nice sounding exhast. I would just put it somewhere in the midpipe and see how it sounds.

aftermarket exhaust companies engineer the optimal placement of a resonator?

not likely!

most can barely get welds to last 5 years.
