Found the pics!
![]() ![]() The dark red (top one in first pic, right one in second) is the 32714AA190 gear. The lighter orange one (bottom one and left one) is 32714AA230. 32714AA190 is the correct one (and is more expensive). Also it was a problem of 28 vs 30 teeth, 30 is the correct count. PS I have an extra 32714AA230 if anyone wants to buy it from me ![]() |

I know this is an old thread. I was just swapping in a 05 Outback XT tranny in to my 02 WRX. It has a final drive of 4.44 i believe. Would i still use the 32714AA190. Or would mine be different? Thanks.

32714AA190 is the forester 4.44 gear, 32714AA230 is the 4.11 gear. Use the 4.44 gear.

I too had swapping issues but found the problem when putting the case back together. Saw the 3.90 speedo gear was pressed down so I just ordered the 99 2.5 Rs red speedo gear from my parts department. Made sure it sat in the groves properly and rolled with no issue. Zero issues. Glad I didn't overlook that. Always gotta make sure everything spins freely before you put it back in your car!

The Outback XT does not use the Forester gear. Even though they are both the same final drive. I just found out and ordered the correct one. Contact Jodie at Rallispec if you are attempting this swap. He was very helpful. Thanks all.

Really? I've been running a forester 4.44 gear in an outaback xt transmission for a year. No problems at all.

I believe you would just pull out the Impreza speed sensor and use the speed sensor from the 93 Legacy? But i am not familiar sure with that year transmission. Pull out both sensors and see if they are similar where they plug in and post it here. I am curious.

I used the 05 LGT center diff which takes the male axels. But i went to a junk yard and pulled the stubs off of a 98 Legacy (automatic) and put them in the center diff. Then i was able to use my 02 WRX axles. The stubs will pop out of the automatic trannys (not the 5spd) and can be used to convert to the older style axles. So you can use both.

I've got a Saab 9-2X, essentially a rebadged '05 WRX. And last week I got the dreaded p0502 code, which unfortunately translated into the speed sensor gear having been shredded. Cost me an arm and a leg to have it fixed, all for a little piece of plastic.
Wouldn't this be considered a flawed design? I'm really upset and wanted to write to Subaru. Has anyone done that? |

But I was really trying to find out if anyone who owns a 05'WRX has complained about the speed sensor gear to Subaru. |

That type of code isn't generally a common issue neither is the wear of the plastic gear. Sure it can happen but not common. I can only imagine that kind of wear coming more from not changing the diff fluid. Probably gets dirty and has contaminants grinding between the gear and the pattern between the 3-4 cluster. Another thing to add, you have a 2005. You are extremely far from any type of warranty. When something goes bad on a car and someone has to put out a lot of money they want to put someone to blame. In reality you're dealing with an older car and things go bad on cars that you have to pay to replace. No car can go it's life without replacing bad or worn parts. |

Hey I was just reading over this post about the speedo sensor swap. It sounded like you had to split the tranny case in order to do the work, is that right? I just did an lgt swap and we didn't realize the issue until we had everything going back in. I have been driving around in limp mode and relying on my spacial reasoning to avoid speeding tickets. I could live without the speedo, but I cannot live with the 5000 rev limit!
In the end, it sounds like I need to split the old case, remove the shaft assembly, score another gear with 30 teeth, split the new case and instal. I hoped to avoid having to pull them apart if possible. Could you have done it without splitting the cases?More importantly, could I? I am just looking for suggestions. I am gonna do it the right way no matter what, I just don't want to take more steps if I don't have to. I plan to take step by step pics for a later posting. ![]() |

Yah, you pretty much have to split the case to install the speedo gear. You also have to buy all the stuff... shaft, the clips, the seals and the plastic gear. Its sucked when i found out too. Not too hard to do though. Use the right torque specs on the bolts when you put it back together.. And use Anaerobic sealer instead of RTV. Make sure it is perfectly clean before you seal it. Wire brush and then some sort of dryer, like carb cleaner.
