Default Any other sundown owners?

I picked up a used Sundown SA12 on craigslist for $80, figured it's worth a shot. The guy that was selling it is very reputable, so I got lucky. Turns out he was just upgrading to this:

Anyways, so I upgraded from an Alpine type S 12" to this SA12. Good sized ported box (not to spec) for now with an alpine 1000rms amp.

Old vs New

Good lord...what an amazing difference. I can't believe how awesome this sub is! Any other sundown owners/fans?

I just picked up a Digital Designs 8. Really similar design. I believe mine has a little longer excursion and a LOT stiffer spider, but I have a friend who picked up the Sundown 8 and he's really happy with it. And that's a huge accomplishment seeing as he is the biggest audio fidelity snob ever. I can't wait to get my car back from AWDtuning (getting a built block) so I can start my audio build. Cadence 6.5 components with neodymium magnets and aluminum cones, LCQ1 line out converter, MA Audio 4 channel and MA Audio mono block. The sub box should be the real trick, A single 8 with two 12" passive radiators.

Sorry for the thread jack, just don't have many audiophiles to talk to lol. What is your box tuned to?

Damn, you have a sick setup! Thread jack approved

The box is just my homeless woofer enclosure. I'm still searching for the best specs, I'm getting some bizarre results.

I'm jealous of those cadence speakers. I'm trying to do Memphis M-Class all around and power them with a 500.4 Memphis/alpine/whatever amp.

I'm really focusing on how to reduce rattle in my trunk lid.

A friend of mine had a sentra back in high school (3 years ago lol) that we build a 5 cubic foot box for some no name sub and tuned it down to 25? hz.. Sounded pretty sick for the time being, broke kids on a budget. But to battle the trunk rattle we filled the voids of the skeleton with Great Stuff and bought weather stripping and doubled it up on the original so that the trunk would create a tighter seal. After that it was just putting rubber washer type deals under the license plate. I know you probably don't want to Great Stuff your trunk, but the weather stripping helped wonders. What model is the sundown? I'd be glad to help you design a box for your needs.

Sorry, saw it in the title, let me do a bit of looking. How low are you wanting to tune it? As long as you have decent mid range I'd suggest tuning to 27-32 hz.... Probox tunes to 45 which is why their **** buzzes the hell out of interior pieces.

Anywhere in that 27-32 range would be perfect. 25 is nuts though!

I'll snag some weather stripping and rubber washers. I think that will cut it down quite a bit.

My mid range should be decent, but I may need to go with better speakers.

All I know if it is that it's the dual voice coil 4ohm SA12.

I have an original SA-8 that never was used. At first I was attracted to the small enclosure size required to run it, then after you factor in the port area, it offered no space savings over a Digital Designs 1508. In other words, one cubic foot tuned to 40 Hz occupies about the same airspace as .65 cubic feet tuned to 32 Hz if you keep the port area the same.

Yeah, they need some space but damn they do work in that space. I cant wait to build a better box. Sadly I just poured a ton of money into massively expanding my aquarium collection. I hope to get a new box in a month or so.

Big sundown fan here, my last setup in my old civic hatch was 4 SA-8's on a SAZ4500d.
