Default 4EAT to 5/6MT swap with an EZ30D??

ATTENTION: This is no longer a noob question thread. I actually did a ton of research on this, and my findings are documented below, along with links to sources, in case anyone's interested.

2/17/2013:

Alright ladies and gentlemen, first thread noob; fasten your seatbelts!

So up until May 2012, I owned a 2004 Outback H6 3.0 LLBean Edition. It was my first car, a car I inherited from my mom, who bought it new in 2004. Long story short, I loved it. Even though it was bone-stock, it was still a blast. Since May, I've been driving a 2008 Acura TL, and my little brother has been learning to drive on the Outback. I love the TL too, but unlike with the Subaru, I have no desire to mod it.

Now, I'm strongly considering making the Outback my first project car. I'm doing so with the knowledge that the Outback is probably the most unlikely choice ever for such a project... but in a way, that just makes me want to do it more hahaha.

One of the biggest complaints I had about the Outback while I owned it was the 4EAT. It's a fine transmission for "normal" driving, but it's still an automatic hahaha. Therefore, if I were to make the Outback my project car, I would want to start with a 4EAT to 5MT or 6MT swap. Now, I've got a bookmarks folder with well over a dozen various 5MT/6MT swap threads on multiple forums, and even a couple of 4EAT to 5MT swap threads. But all of those threads only cover trans swaps in cars with EJ2xx's. My car has an EZ30D.

So yeah, has anybody seen a swap like this done before? What additional work would need to go into it compared to a 4EAT to 5MT swap with an EJ2xx? Any input or referrals are hugely appreciated.

This is a project I likely wouldn't attempt for a couple of years, if I attempted it at all, but might as well start planning for it from now. Weighing this idea against a couple others, including just buying a 2006 LGT 5MT wagon (good luck to me finding a stock one of those for sale in 2 years hahaha). Also, my experience of working on cars is limited to a 3-week summer job/apprenticeship at a local auto shop. I started out there not knowing a thing about working on cars, but by the time I was done I had helped with a head gasket replacement on a 2001 Outback 4cyl and the engine teardown on a 2006 Legacy GT in preparation for a head gasket replacement.

UPDATE: 4/29/2013:

Well, I haven't yet started the swap yet, but I have gotten some very important information since starting this thread. Since this thread ain't completely dead yet, I'll just throw my findings out to the world so they can get referenced, corrected, or both.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The master swap list ('04/'05 STI transmission):

This list is basically my dream list for this swap. I would likely want to do a 6MT + R180 swap over a 5MT + R160 swap, considering the 5MT is kind of weak and I believe in overbuilding the car rather than under-building it. However, if you don't mind the 5MT or have sufficient faith in it, I'm sure a 5MT + R160 swap can be done with similar parts and for quite a bit cheaper.

-04-05 STI 6MT
-3.9:1 front diff
-1.1:1 center diff

-04-05 STI R180 rear differential
-3.54:1

-07-09 Spec B rear axles
-Axles: 28421AG03B
-Axle seals: 806732200

-2005-2006 LGT front axles
-IF 2004 TRANS.: replace axle seals with 2005
-L/H: 806735240
-R/H: 806735230

-6MT shift linkage
-Preferably Spec B
-If you have an STI shift linkage, the shift lever will not be centered as the
STI shifter rod and shifter stay are shorter than the Legacy parts. So, you'll
need these:
-Spec B Shifter Rod: 35041AG020
-Spec B Shifter Stay: 35031AG020
-Stick with 04-07 STI shift levers, as the 08+ versions are not
compatible.

-6MT clutch

-6MT flywheel

-STI Pedal Assembly

-Spec B Driveshaft (Possibly reuse 4EAT driveshaft)

-DCCD controller

-Small parts (should be included in most used transmissions):

-6MT master cylinder
-6MT clutch fork - 30530AA050
-6MT clutch release shaft - 30532AA020
-6MT clutch slave cylinder - 30620AA172
-alternate: 30620AA173
-6MT clutch hose
-6MT throw-out bearing
-6MT rear transmission mount (same part for Spec B and Impreza)
-Reverse lockout cable - 35060AG010
-R180 diff mount from the spec B - 41310AT040
-Not strictly necessary
-Clutch fork shaft plug (threaded cap that holds the fork shaft in)
-30550AA000 for 04-07
-11021AA010 for 08+
-Output Shaft Oil Seal (oil seal for the driveshaft interface)-806735210 -
$11.50
-Clutch fork spring (spring that connects clutch fork to bell housing)
-30546AA060 - $5.20
-Inner shift boot (foam/rubber, mostly for noise insulation, you can reuse
the 5MT if you trim it)

-Unsure:
-Starter
-TCU
-Hubs (hub swap would be an excuse for a Brembo swap hehehe)
-Gauge cluster (possibly a JDM swap for when you go above 110 mph hahaha).

-Wiring skill

-Luck

-Beer

Aaaaaand that there's your relatively finalized parts list. Note that this is research that was done solely on the internet; I have NOT yet taken my car apart to see if any of these parts actually work, for either my 3rd gen or your Outback of a different generation. I am a guy on the internet you have never met; take my advice if you want, but I highly encourage you to fact-check those part numbers.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Problems that might arise:

So, looking at peoples' threads who have done auto-->manual swaps was the best way I could find to figure out ahead of time what problems would be faced. Very few people have done such swaps, but their problems seem to be relatively universal. Problems can include, but will unlikely be limited to (given my luck):

Neutral position sensor and other problems with making the ECU realize the car is a manual

Vehicle speed sensor

Cruise control

ABS

Synchronizing/swapping the speedometer

Reverse lights

Taking care of various CEL's

Most of these problems have been solved in the various projects I have seen, and the solutions appear to be relatively simple, for the most part. However, the threads I've looked at have all concerned EZ30 + 5MT swaps; no mention of a 6MT swap ever having been completed, or even so much as attempted, much less documented. I can't imagine that the 6MT would cause all that much more trouble, aside from the obvious necessity to program or somehow deal with the DCCD.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Thread links - some interesting reading:

All of the build threads here involve mating an EZ30D with a 5MT. None involve the 6MT, unfortunately, but all of them are massively informative. The last thread is the 6MT master swap thread from LegacyGT.com. It's where I got my swap list from, so creds to the OP in that thread. That thread applies to 4th gen's, but I can imagine that most parts are pretty universally applicable. Like I said though... fact-check me.

I have been looking at doing this to my 07 LLBean it already has a 5 speed automatic. I love the car just hate the automatic transmission. I have looked for Forums all over. I think it would be possible, I met a guy who swapped a 5mt into a svx and i feel like if you put in some time and $ it could be a awesome car. Please post any updates of anything you find.
