2012 Impreza Hatch Sound Deadening

So a few days ago at work i found a few rolls of ensolite in the trash. probably about 100 sq ft of 1/8 in thick gray CCF. This got me to thinking i could use it to deaden my car. The road noise is horrendous and i have nothing better to do on the weekends.
I started looking around at work for more scrap material and found a good amount of ADC (acoustic dampening compund) that we use to sound proof aircraft cabins. I also found a sheet of 1/4 thick CCF with some thick aluminum backing. I figured that was enough for the doors but not much else so i went to home depot and purchased a roll of 12 in wide butyl tape. (before people say anything negative about this: this is BUTYL tape not asphalt based, is relatively thick, a roll weighs about 15 lbs and more importantly it is dirt cheap). I also purchased some spray adhesive and caulk rope to run in the doors.

After removing the door cards I found a little more deadener than I thought I would.

I added some of the rope caulk between the door beams and the skin:

After that I applied the ADC to the door skin. This stuff is incredibly heavy and has a .020 thick aluminum backing.

After the ADC I added the foam backed aluminum on top. I only had about 4 sq ft of this so i used it as strategically as possible.

In order to reduce sound transmission in the door itself i added a layer of ensolite on top of everything using the spray adhesive.

Once the inside was done i moved on to the inner door skin. I started by closing up the holes using the butyl tape. This is not ideal but it's what i had to work with and really just needed something for the ensolite to stick to.

Than I added some ensolite on top of that.

That's about it for the front doors.

Here is a video for before reference before any work was done. Cruise set at 60 mph, everything tuned off.

Today I'm going to work on the rear doors and the cargo area putting a layer of butyl down and then a layer of ensolite on top.

For those of you who will say it is a waste of time and money, im not doing it right etc... that's fine with me. I did nearly the same process in my old car and noticed a huge difference. Most of the material was free and I have about $40 in this project. I have a ton of free time on the weekends so even if the results aren't perfect which i know they wont be, it was a fun project. I'm not aiming for perfection. I just want the best results with what i have and I feel like what i did works but i will not know until I do a road test.

I think this is GREAT! I just got my STI two weeks ago and am surprised at the high noise level. After spending hours reading about sound deadening, yours is the first post I've seen with dB #'s. Honestly, without verifiable #'s, I will not go through the trouble - I emailed the RAAMAT guy for info about actual data and got no reply.

Am I correct that 79 dB is the highest "before" reading?

That is a waste of money, and adds too much weight. You gain nothing by covering an entire surface with Dynamat, or any other product like it. Strategic placement to deaden vibration is the key.

Thanks for the write up thus far. I plan to tackle this project when summer rolls around. The floor needs a LOT of work, but the results should be worth the trouble.

Thanks. I will be doing a road test this week. I have yet to do the rear doors or under the rear seats. I think I will save that and the floor for when I have the best/correct material since that's a decent amount of work to do.
