While replacing my front pads I attepted to find the rattle that has been annoying me for months. Well I found where its comming from but not what is causing it. It is definately comming from the strut, because when I tapped on it with a rubber mallet it would rattle. Would a blown strut cause that?

I dunno if a blown strut would make rattling noise or not. Although I used to have a car with the front right strut blown (it doesn't take bumps too well after that) but it didn't make any rattle noise.
But either way, struts should NOT rattle internally if they are installed properly. If you're 100% sure that the rattle is coming from your perfectly installed strut you should probably get it replaced. (Excuse to get something fun to put on your car!) ![]() |

Did you check to make sure the bolts attaching the strut to the chassis were tight? A blown strut generally is indicated by fluid leaking from the unit and the aforementioned issue with oscillation control when going over bumps. I would retorque all the bolts to factory spec and see if that helps.

the tophat on my rattling strut was defective, causing the strut top nut to not be physically able to tighten it down, the nut was at the end of the threads, couldnt tighten any more, yet there was wobble room for the tophat between there, that was the rattle. Used my old tophat, problem fixed. yay

Is there a reason for bumping a 4.5 year old thread other than telling everyone you fixed a problem?
Sounds like you put a newer strut mount on an older strut. This commonly causes noise issues and is the reason people stack washers or spacers under the strut mount when doing this type of combination of parts. |
