Default GC8 coupe roof replacement or repair?

I just bought a '98 Impreza 2dr coupe with a roof rust problem (I got it cheap). The front edge of the roof has rust damage with small holes. I would guess that repairing it doesn't make much sense (or does it?); therefore, I assumed that the best plan was to replace the roof panel. If this is the consensus, does someone know where I can order something like this? Note that I wouldn't mind a CF roof if one existed; anyone know for sure?

Thanks,
Paul

I know they do not make CF roofs for GCs. The roof can be swapped, some of the rally guys i know put L roofs into RS coupes to get rid of the sunroofs so they can put in roof scoops. I have no idea if it will affect the intergity of the car because they all have cages anyway.

Thanks SDB.

Does anyone know if the roof panels are welded on or if they are glued in place? I would love to hear from anyone who has done this swap.

Thanks,
Paul

the panels are welded on.

tack-welds. thousands of them.

this example shows the A-pillar after it's been drilled out for replacement.

I had to completely re-shell my race car last year.

roof, quarter panel, pillars, doors....

*shaking head*
not a swap for the weak
definitely something to leave to the professionals

are you certain the roof assy cannot be repaired?

Jamie.. you are too hardcore.

Most of the time don't they just cut off the rusted areas and weld new sheet metal on? I'm pretty sure I saw that done on a classic car restoration show.

Thanks for your words of wisdom Jamie. That does not look fun at all!

I had thought I read that the '02 + models were tack welded, but that the GC8 was assembled differently. Has anyone tried this on a GC8? If it is tack welded, I may try to cut out the rust and weld in new sheet metal.

Thanks again,
Paul

I'd like to know this for certain as well - I'm contemplating swapping the roof on my RS to get rid of the sunroof. Somewhere I recalled an Aluminum roof in some rally variant RS in Japan. Did that really exist?
