Default inspection questions (MA)

hey guys,

Recently got into a new wrx and looking at exhaust options for a stage 2 upgrade. Anyhow...has anyone had any luck or problems with catless/ loud exhausts during inspection? I know recently they had changed the process for inspection but just getting some suggestions prior to purchasing anything. thanks for your help.

If your car doesn't have a check engine light, you should be fine. Also, be careful with your exhaust. Better off borrowing a stocker

removing the catalytic converter from your car is illegal and can result in serious consequences

^^ hogwash! haha

As long as no CEL you should be fine. If your car is loud and you have a silencer use it. If not stock catback mates up to an aftermarket DP and your golden.

It's the truth, whether or not you'll get caught is a different story. Keep a visible cat for inspection and you'll be fine at almost any inspection shop. Make it silly loud and they may take a closer look.

Tampering with an emissions control device is publishable by up to a $10,000 fine and/or up to 10 years in Federal "Pound me in the exhaust" prison.

The absolute worst thing that will happen (and I man this cop will have to be having the worst week) is you'll be towed and get a fix it ticket. Throw the stock one back on, get a letter from an inspection place that its stock and everything checks out and bring that to court.

Most cases, just say you bottomed out and put a hole in it.

that just isn't true....also keep in mind that an exhaust ticket counts as points against your license, get enough of them and you're off to traffic school.

3 citations for the same offense, no matter what it is, is a mandatory suspension.

One of the guys here on NESIC just got his license suspended for 3 tint tickets.

I've had my car inspected by the same shop 3 times now. Catless and with a melon launcher without a baffle. Passed every time. Not sure if they just DGAF or if they just check for a CEL or whatnot. I guess it just really depends on where you bring it.

Friend of mine had to go to traffic school for too many "loud exhaust" tickets in his 80something Mecury Capri he had.(same as a Mustang for those who never heard of them).

He said no one there believed him when he told them why he was there, everyone else was there for serious offenses like drunk driving, speeding...etc. and all he had to say for himself was, "My name is Adam and my car is loud" and when they went around asking how people are gonna change their driving habits he said, "I dunno... get mufflers?"

like you said MA just changed there laws about exhaust and emissions, new laws state that any modified exhaust from stock is an automatic rejection. stay catted and either have stocker on or find an easy inspection guy and throw him a little more cash and you should be good

Cheap is a relative term. I wish used WRXs were as cheap to buy as they were 5 years ago.

Since on topic of stickers. My gf has stock 02 civic. Front windshield is cracked on the passenger side. No check engine light. Her inspection due next month. I'm from ri, and know its little easier to get a sticker for little extra money. Is it the same for ma, or will they hassle her for windshield or anything else.

I'm not 100% positive, but doesn't every MA auto insurance policy cover windshield replacement? (What I was told before, not sure if it's true)

If that's the case, just get a new windshield.

It all depends. One place wouldn't pass my car with my Cobb exhaust even though its very quiet for a catless 3 inch, another place didn't say a word. Best bet is either knowing someone or swapping on stock for a day.
