I'm not too worried about the naming convention because who cares. It's just the GT hatches and actual physically weird ass stuff they're coming out with that bother me. This will be a stunner in person. The sedan already makes me drool.
My only real beef with the F3X exterior design remains the whale hump on the hood. Other manufacturers seem capable of dealing with the pedestrian safety reg more gracefully, I don't know why BMW had to be so damn obvious. Other than that though, it's a very classy design that also looks aggressive.

I think it's pretty pimp. The name change aside, it definitely looks a lot more upscale than just being a 3-Series with two fewer doors. I think it will be a good competitor to the A5.

Love the look of the German luxury vehicles, but the whole goal for the vehicle is not really my style. I'd rather have less luxury and more performance for a cheaper price. I'm sure that will change as I get older though.

Damn, I like they way this car looks!! Has there been any word on the power train? I'm guessing the article is right with the 2.0 and 3.0 but have there been any bumps in power?

From what I have read:

The N20 4cyclinder Turbo will be the standard motor. I have test driven the new 328i and this motor hummmms very nicely. Was up to 70MPH in no time, didn't feel torquey like a 6 cylinder though. But that is expected I guess.

There will be an updated inline 6 Turbo motor for the supposed 435i or 440i or 445i or whatever BMW is going to call it.

I was thinking this maybe my next car but from what I have read this will be an up market car. I am certain it will be out of my $$$ range.

Nice, I like it. It's too bad they want to charge more for the 2-door by making it a 4-series, but I guess that's typical.

I think it looks great. The hump is part of the design, gives it a more muscular build... much like fender flares.

Too bad, the Germans have tended to charge more for less luxury and more focused performance - M-B AMG Black series, Porsche GT# RS series, and BMW CSL packages.

Still think BMW is not so smart going with "4-series" for the 2-door version of the 3-series. Seems totally unnecessary. Guess 8 & 9 will be appearing soon.

Isn't that how most companies do it? The GT-R SpecV charged something like double the normal price for less luxury and more focused performance. From the Integra to the NSX, Acura/Honda charged more for the Type-R variants, even if they lost some interior pieces. Same thing with Ferrari's 360 Challenge Stradale and F430 Scuderia, charging a lot more for basically no interior amenities. The first Ferrari I had ever ridden in was a F430 16M Scuderia, but when I finally got into a "regular" Ferrari, it was so much more plush. So it's not just the Germans.

Personally I'd have preferred for them to keep the 3-Series moniker, but I understand their strategy, even if it is leaving behind 30+ years of history. They want to move the coupe more upscale, likely help it compete better with the Audi A5. Plus it will help their intended resulting price hike be justified in the eyes of the typical consumer. But the name change was something that was rumored to be happening for the current generation, but obviously they delayed it.

I just can't believe they're throwing away the M3 name. That has to be one of the most respected brands out there.

They're not "throwing it away," it's just going to apply to only the sedan. Its past competitors were mostly sedans anyway, with the C63 only having offered a coupe for the past year or two while having been a sedan throughout most of its lifespan and also when the C36, C43 and C55 were out. Same thing with the IS-F.

Don't get me wrong, I acknowledge that the M3 was typically renowned for its coupes (as it has always been available as a coupe), but it's not like people who want two-door sports car (where the M3 had few direct competitors, unlike its sedan counterpart) will suddenly not figure out that the M4 is the coupe.

I suspect there is an admission within BMW that Audi has been kicking their butt when it comes to product hierarchy (or whatever the business jargon is). Like you said, BMW positioning the new 3er coupe as the 4 series is a clear reaction to the success of the A5.

Moreover, this new idea of "M performance" models is very much in line with Audi's A-S-RS scheme. Audi basically succeeded in marketing their Sx cars as competitors to the top of the line regular BMWs, and the RSx as competitors to the M cars. The latter is maybe not so successful, but I think the former really worked. Audi doesn't even offer a V6 in the A4 and the V8 in the A6, and instead badges these big engine models as S something and managed to place them half of step above the BMWs with comparable engines. I now see that a lot of people view the S4 as a nicer alternative to the 335i(s), and the S6 to the 550i.

So apparently the new 2 series will only come with a 4 pot engine in the regular form, and the one with the turbo 6 will be called M235i. That is, there will not be a 235i, only M235i. This is exactly the same as what Audi is doing. I don't know if BMW will have the guts to phase out the 335i and 550i eventually to replace them exclusively with M335i and M550i, but I'm guessing that's the direction they want to go if they can pull it off. In the near future I suspect they will be offering M335i alongside a 335i.
