I blew my engine last week and am looking for a replacement but have a few questions. Yes I have used the search for two days and I still dont have my answer. The car is a 2006 wrx non sti
the vin# is JFI GD796XXXXXXXXXXX my question is the 6th digit? Mine is a 7 and I have read that the 7 is for the sti ? So do I need to look for a EJ257? or something different. so if this has been gone over but I have looked. thanks in advance.

d000000000000000d....yew kneed any motor out of any 06 or 07 wrx to be a straight swap
you can MAKE almost any other engine made by subaru since about 1990 WORK if you want to take the time(and $$$) to do it any of the pre 08 2.5 turbo motors that are dbw will be less hassle than other engines this isnt really complicated unless you want to make it so |

I know the 06-07 is direct bolt but I can seem to find a low mileage one.
So I was going to buy a long block and that's why the vin is kinda messing me up. Some people are saying I need the sti because the 6th digit is a 7 and some are saying it is a non sti. When I Google the info on the vin I saw that the car is a Japan car not us but the engine portion I saw both ways. |

Dude just order a EJ257 and use your heads unless your heads a fudged...
EJ255 and EJ257 are the exact same thing from what i understand the 257 compression may be a little different but it will bolt in just fine |

Correct...the EJ257 short block uses lower compression pistons for the higher boost STi
8.3:1 vs 8.5:1(WRX) I think. In theory, the EJ257 short block will allow you to run higher boost, but with a slight loss in the low end. Do reuse the heads. The 06/07 heads have the EGR/Air Pump ports built in. If you eliminate the EGR system, then the earlier 04/05 DOHC 2.5 turbo heads will work. |

That's all incorrect. Yes the entire EJ257 runs lower compression than the entire EJ255, but that's because of the heads. The EJ257 pistons are actually HIGHER compression than the EJ255 pistons. Slapping 255 heads on a 257 bottom end will cause you to run even more compression than either of those engines do stock.

Are you sure you told them correctly? Sticking 255 heads on a 257 will raise the compression from 8.2:1 to closer to 8.8:1. I would CERTAINLY get it checked out to make sure there's no knock.
