I've been running the mazda filters since they discontinued the subaru ones. Worked fine for the ~50k km I put on the RS motor... should answer your question fil.

The mazda filters are cheap... 7-10 bucks just over the parts counter at local dealer. I'm sure they could be even cheaper if you bought in bulk or something...

I checked my stock and none were anywhere close to the defective date-codes.
