Was just wondering if anyone can confirm that the 02 and 03 WRX 4EAT's have the same valve bodies and torque converters in them?
![]() Are they the same for the sedan vs. the wagon as well? I searched but couldn't seem to find a clear answer to either of these questions. Thanks ahead of time ![]()

Call IPT and ask them. I am sure they will know. Most likely those parts are interchangable.

I did that and they just told me "most likely" because they won't confirm anything without actually seeing it.
Was just hoping for 100% confirmation but I guess I'll just swing it =P |

I would assume they are the same. Very few differences if any. As long as the trans is from a WRX and confirmed it is a VTD 4EAT Transmission, you should be good.

Yeah no worries, good luck. What are you planning to do? Fully Built Trans?

No, I'm just thinking about only doing the valve body(IPT) now to give the clutch plates a chance to last longer. Putting a Blouch evo III 16g on with supporting mods, so it'll prolly only be around the 300whp range. It's just a daily driver so I'm thinking I don't really want to do a high stall torque converter anymore. I never launch the car so I don't really see the need for the TC currently.

I would still get it rebuilt even without the torque converter. More power equals more stress. It's best to refresh the whole thing.
Here's an example of what to expect. |

I have a 4EAT that has turboback, catless uppipe, tmic, intake, stage 2 reflash and my torque converter came apart inside of itself which then sent bits into the filter which clogged which then burnt up the 3rd gear clutches all at 78,000 miles.

Just curious... And should I bother adding an aftermarket tranny cooler even though I'm not doing a high stall TC because that adds most of the heat I know...is a tranny cooler required with just a VB upgrade? Last edited by Rymaster; 03-14-2013 at 11:37 PM. Reason: Question |

It was stage 2 for around 55,000 miles. It was launched maybe 10 times the entire time I have owned the car. Pretty much normal driving and sometimes would drive it hard but certainly not beating on it.
Money is my limiting factor as well. It cost me $3300 for a rebuild. If it blows up again I will just charge the full IPT trans and be done with it. The guy who rebuilt my transmission used to do all the Subaru Road Race team transmissions so I am not too worried. Trans cooler won't hurt no matter what mods or stages are done. The stock cooler runs through the radiator. |

Yeah the current trans I have in has ~120k on it, I think it's been stage two for a good while also although I'm not positive. I'm sure it's only a matter of time until it goes, especially with going with a bigger turbo.

Yeah mine might have been a fluke or a defect somewhere. I would just mod how you want to and go from there. My trans guy did say though he is totally against flushes and only recommends drains and refills. We also went full synthetic in my trans and diffs.
