Just did this wonderful mod. I used regular OSRAM Sylvania H9 bulbs. Pure white in person

I know the plastic in the socket needs to be grinded down but doesn't one of the metal tabs around the outside need to be cut/trimmed as well? Or, will it work without the trimming?

No trimming of the bezel needed, only the body of the light. Just make sure you know which side to cut. There is a thread on this somewhere. A Google search should find it.

Sorry. I meant is this part necessary:

Seems as though the OP only grinded down the socket tab and not this part.

I did not have to trim down that metal tab.

I did not have to trim the metal piece of the H9 light bulbs either.

Why 4? Are you putting them in the high beams as well?

Also, anyone have a recommendation for a fog light bulb that will match these well? I'm looking for white and not yellow output.

Nope. Just didn't want to pay for shipping. It only cost a bit more.

I'll either just keep them stored or sell them to someone in my local subie group.

Does the tab have to be remove completely all the way to the bottom of the connector?

I think the bulb will fit best if the tab if removed fully. I ended up using a box knife with a fresh blade to finish off the job, and mine fit great.

Made the removals in all the bulbs with a box cutter with ease and finally have them in the low beams. I can't wait to see the difference at night.

With the box cutter where you able to get the tab off completely? I can't get the last 1/8" taken off with the box cutter.

I used a finger nail file to finish the last little bit.

Well I used a Utility Knife. Regardless, keep scraping away at the last bit of it. It really only took me a minute for each bulb.

Phillips 9011= DRL/Highbeam
Phillps 9012 = OEM fog lights

The 9011 high beams made a significant difference in total light out put. The 9012 fog light is a cleaner light with more light width on the periphery.

The H9/9011/9012 light modification gives for as much better night time driving experience.

Gotta say, I just completed the install and tested them out. I'm not that impressed. I used the phillips H9 & HIR in the high beams and can't really tell a difference. Even when I only installed 1 side and shined it on the house, couldn't notice a major difference. The HIRs I could tell were a little brighter when I looked directly into the lights but I don't know if its worth possibly burning something up.

I think I will switch back to the bulbs that came with the car.

I'm starting to realize that the '08-'10 show differences in light output but '11-'13 aren't....

They're the same headlight with the same projector inside.

I know but if you go through the thread isn't weird that a lot of the '12-'13 guys don't really see a difference? I dunno maybe its just me.

I never realized that but it's true. People who complain about not seeing much difference in light output are almost all in the newer model car. On my 10 the difference was very noticeable going to the h9 in the lowbeam
