If they're permanently wired through the DRL resistor, yes. The question remains, why?

Also, it is illegal to drive against oncoming traffic with both the low and high-beams on, whether or not the high-beams operate at less than 100% output.

Otherwise, yes, you would shunt the feed from the resistor to a separate switch.

Did I get it right: it's not allowed to have high and low beam at the same time in the us?

I don't even get this guide, sorry.
Can't I just take a wire from the parking light with a diode or is 5W too low?

Get high-temperature wire-loom and wrap the wires and vacuum hoses that are routed over the resistor to protect them. I did this as well as to obtain a length of 1" wire-loom to double-up, so-to-speak, to protect.

If you've had the opportunity to work on an older car, you will notice that the vacuum hose to/from the OEM boost controller becomes both discolored and brittle where it is just above the resistor.

Thank you for this. Mod was super easy to do, I wanted to just pull the plugs out of their sockets and swap but couldn't figure out how, ended up cutting and resoldering, but works beautifully!

Going to pick up a 2008 resistor to make them dimmer, really like it so far.

I didn't know until I did this though that the DRLs do not turn on unless the engine is running. While I was testing, I had the key in II and made sure all my regular lights were working, but even with the e-brake off the DRLs did not come on until I started the engine. Had me worried I wired something wrong for a while there, but it's working great!

If the resistance value is close to the normally used OEM one it should be ok. It has plenty of power handling capacity. These type of resistors are mounted usually with metal taps at each end since they usually get so hot. You will need to mount it carefully and also protect it from the outside environment conditions.
