I know you would. Your a good guy and I am glad you are happy with your MPG's. Mine does not do what it is supposed to, wish it did, oh man I wish it did.

I can't remember which thread it was, but someone mentioned something about first using the downshift paddle, and then upshifting. This should keep it in the higher gear for ~1-2 minutes or something like that.

Let's see if I can locate that post...

EDIT: I can't sem to find it. However, you'll just have to take my word (or, even better yet, try it for yourself). I've done it before where (just using the paddles in "D" mode) I downshifted, then upshifted, and the CVT kept it "in gear" for about a minute or two before popping back into "D" mode.

I'm not sure if that'll hold for the commute up (and down) La Bajada that you do, but it's probably worth a try.

It would be vice if they could change the start/warm-up sequence for the pzev cars, because I really don't like it, especially since I live in a non pzev state

Well I think it pretty much stays in manual while compression braking - I've never had it go back the "D" then. If it was tied to positive torque as well as negative torque that would work I think.

7-20 Starting and operating

For models with manual mode, if one of
the shift paddles behind the steering
wheel is operated while driving in the “D”
position, the transmission will temporarily
switch to the manual mode.
In this mode,
you can shift into any gear position using
the shift paddles. For details about the
manual mode, refer to “Selection of
manual mode” F7-20. Once the vehicle
speed stabilizes, the transmission will
switch from the manual mode back to
the “D” position for normal driving.

On longer trips in hilly terrain I like to switch to manual mode and use cruise. I can stick it in 6th and there's enough grunt to lug me up the rolling hills around here. Then the mpg gauge doesn't go nearly as far left as when in automatic mode.

Actually this is the first 4 Cylinder automatic car I don't bother switching into Manual mode. Found the CVT does a very good job up steep mountain switchbacks though sometimes go into manual mode down them for more control.

Ok so I filled up today and here are the results......

417 miles
13.935 gallons
29.9 MPG
Avg MPH was 46

about 1/3 of those miles were on I-95 at about 80 mph....obviously there's slower highway and some city mixed in there as well.

Just Sharing... 2013 CVT PZEV filled up tonight.. 364 miles - 13.265 = 27.44 This was 85% / 15% Hghy/city. Always reset AVG trip display which showed 30.03 when I pulled in to get gas. Can honestly say car never went above 3500 rpm. You guys are okay with this? I am not. Best part is as usual after refilling drove about 16miles home and bye the time I pulled into garage the AVG MPG shows 38+, but by my next refill, will prob be at an abismal 27 again. And I have to stae my driving habbits are very consistent. That is why firstly I dont bother with the AVG MPG display, and secondly why I am sooo pissed!!! Oh man

How much of your commute is spent idling, and how many times do you need to accelerate? What is the car reporting as average speed?

I have 13 stop lights/signs on my 7 mile commute. About 1/3 35mph and 2/3 45mph roads and normally go about 5 over.

I would say that's a recipe for low MPG's

Not Much idling at all, AVG speed I think is somwhere like 41 or 40, rarely look at that part of the display.. and have a few stop signs to get to highway... than sometimes a mile or so in stop go traffic.. then a few stop signs again and 2 or 3 traffic lights total.. That is how I come up with about 85% highway.. out of the 20 miles on cummute maybe 3 or 4 are not highway...

Not really. Last tank was 28mpg on the nose with 85% coming from that commute.
For the record, I rarely get it above 2500rpm.

Definitely not how mine works. I went down two fairly large hills, one steep enough to hold speed in 5th with no gas or brake pedal use, and one of over a mile with variable grades and steep enough to maintain a constant speed. In both cases, even when the "speed stabilized" it stayed in 5th while compression braking. It is not until I give it some gas or the engine speed slows to basically idle in the gear, which is the same thing, that it goes back to drive. When depressing the gas pedal, it will go back to drive under any conditions after only a couple of seconds (even when downshifting and then upshifting).

Is that not how everyone's works?

Hmmm... I'm almost certain that that's not how mine works. If I'm in D mode, and then I do a down-up in quick succession (ie. upshift within 5 seconds of downshifting), it'll hold it in that "gear" until about a half minute later, regardless of whether I step on the gas or not. The only time I've come across where it auto-resets to D in less than about half a minute of "shifting" is when I reach a full stop.

Not sure if that answers your question...?
