Sometimes both. Deep wet snow or sand your in trouble. The car doesn't have enough power to handle even spin the wheels.

On the flip side I was able to climb over a curb and pretty tall grass median that was slippery with ease.

5MT or CVT? Can't just downshift and have the TC off?

Just brought her home...

Too good of a deal to pass up.

5MT, Winter mats, cargo tray, cargo cover. Whee!!

I saw 2 XVs out in the wild today. It is probably my 2nd favorite Subaru right now.

Congratulations. How much and which dealership? I am also in a similar situation, deciding between a 2014 Forester 2.5i CVT and XV CVT. Wish XV was priced $1000 cheaper, it would have been easier to decide

How deep are you talking about? One of the tests we did during training was through some sand. I would say about a 1 1/2-2ft. No problems at all. At all!

I trudged through some sand on a Japanese beach with a 58hp Justy. I don't think the Crosstrek will have issues. Well, unless you were fully loaded trying it. Then, I would just say don't try it while fully loaded.

What are you going to use it for? Fuel economy is basically the same, so no real advantage there.

Need more cargo room? Go with Forester.
Want something that looks more "sporty?" Go with XV.
Want more room in back seat? Go with Forester.
Going to do a lot of towing? While both have same towing capacity, Forester has slightly better power:weight ratio.
Want more standard features for your money? Go with XV.

Ultimately go with the car you can get the best deal on and the one you think looks the best. If it is still the same at that point and test drives haven't helped you, either flip a coin or ask a friend to decide for you.

Well it was compact snow with wet sand under it.

I have the CVT and had it in manual mode 1st gear. 2nd gear wouldnt even spin the tires. Hell 1st barely would. Had to rock it a million times forward and reverse with 2 friends pushing to get some momentum up and get out.

Also tried to dig out and use my mats, sticks and rocks for traction.

I also had winter tires on that were a little smaller and not as much tread as stock tires.

Gratz on the buy. All around great car. I have the CVT. The split is 60/40 I think which kind of sucks but meh. As far as TC you can not completely disable to system. It is very very annoying. Not like my WRX which I could turn all traction systems off.

I thought the active AWD was something like a 90/10 or a 80/20 split?

It went something like this on Saturday night while watching TV...

[Wife] Did you see what Quirk Subaru (Braintree MA) has on their site for deals?
[Me] No, what.
[Wife] (Passes laptop)
[Me] (Reads ad) Holy, what??? No way can that be real. Too good to be true.
[Wife] Yeah, but the fine print doesn't say anything about $X down or anything or what the stock number(s) are.
[Me] (Pulls up their inventory) I bet it's the Orange Premium 5MT.
[Wife] It's either that or DK, right?
[Me] OK. I'll call when they open tomorrow and put down $100, then head to Somerset and see if they'll match the ad.
------ Sunday Morning ------
[Me] (Calls Quirk Subaru) Hi, I see online that you have an ad for Crosstreks. Is this one particular stock number or is it on multiple.
[Quirk] That ad only is for one Crosstrek, it's [Stock Number] but it's Orange
[Me] Cool!
[Quirk] Yeah. We have it in our show room. But it's also a standard.
[Me] Even better! I'll put $100 on it now and I'll be there today around 3:30/4.
(Give all info to Quirk)
------ My Local dealer opens at noon ------
[Me] (Sitting with local sales person I've been dealing with) Thanks for the test drives. I want to give you a shot at matching this ad. I've called them today and verified that the car is in stock and I put $100 on it to hold it.
[Somerset] You want us to match this ad, on the DK coming off the truck?
[Me] Yes.
[Somerset] It can't be real. There has to be a catch.
[Me] I've been assured there isn't.
[Somerset] I'll go talk to my manager.
[Me] Ok.
[Somerset]Comes back... we both agree, there's got to be a catch. Here's the invoice on the one coming in. They're asking for well below that. There's no way they can do that. We can do invoice.
[Me] That's too bad. I guess we'll know this afternoon.
[Somerset] There's probably some catch to get you into the dealer and then make you pay more.
[Me] I hope not, but it's worth it to check it out.
[Somerset] Good luck. Let me know how you make out.

The DK coming in only had an Auto dimming mirror.
The Tangerine has winter floor mats, bumper cover, cargo tray, cargo cover.

What was the price in the ad and what did I pay for it? $20,399 (+Doc, title, reg). It was on their 1st allocation and no one was biting on it. They wanted it gone. So, probably deal of the year. They also took my trade for a price I wanted, which was huge... because the difference in price between the trade and new car is what you get taxed on in MA. So that was over $1000 in savings in taxes alone.

Drove there in the G8, left with the XV. (Wasn't expecting that to happen, but it worked!)

And that there is the reason why I wanted a 5MT. To me, it's the better AWD system. Of course, you didn't have the 'right' tires, so that could also lend to a problem. Not saying an MT woudln't have gotten stuck, but that's how much faith I have in it.

Are those 225/55/16 snows (stock '02-'05 WRX size)?

When you say it didn't have enough power to spin the wheels in '2nd', where does the torque converter stall at (ie: what rpm)?

Stock WRX tire size was 205/55-16 on a 6.5" wide wheel... same as the 1st gen 2.5RS except the RS had a wider wheel.

The decision would have been easier if it was just me. This will be my wife's car. She wants a AWD fuel sipper with decent ground clearance. After comparing the specs (milage, engine power, interior room, road noise), she is leaning towards 2014 Forester Premium. From the quotes we have, it is only about $600-$800 more than a XV. From her perspective, she getting a bigger car with 1MPG loss (compared to XV) for only about $700 more.
I want her to buy a XV because I think it is very cool compared to the dated exterior of the new Forester and, I am very weary of buying a redesigned car in its first year. Oh well, time to brain-wash one of her siblings to sway her mind...

Maybe a stupid question, but did you try auto mode? Or did you go straight into manual mode?

The engineer that I talked to said the Active AWD adjusts soo much that you can't really throw a standard number on it; but, if you just HAD to have a number, he said it would be closest to 80/20.

Thanks. I have read both numbers, but I guess 80/20 is closer to the split it typically sees.

And the reason I'd like the light bar is so people don't bump into my car. If only they made them for the sides of the car too!!!

My wife and I were at Quirk Sunday afternoon, comparing the '13 and '14 Foresters. She didn't like the '13, so we're going to wait for leftover '14's or order a '15 next year.

I didn't want to confuse the issue by checking out the XV's, since I really like how they look, especially in DK! Did you say the DK they had was a MT, also?

Somerset is getting the DK in, 5MT. They didn't want to (or couldn't) do the same offer as the orange one at Quirk that I bought (it was the one in the showroom).
