I had one of those conversations that you just have to walk away from today.

Him "Nice looking ride, is it a V6?"
Me "Thanks, but no it's a 4 banger."
Him "All that noise and no go? What is it with you guys these days?" (it has a very quiet cat back)
Me "Well, it's got a turbo, so it scoots pretty good"
Him "No chance it can keep up with my ride, V6 baby!" Points to his Toyota Highlander
Me "Um... Ya... I think you might be surprised...."

On my way to the bar with a buddy of mine and two girls in the back. My buddy looks at all my gauges and asks about how the boost works because he sees "boost" on my boost gauge. I'll never make fun of someone for not knowing about cars, we were all there once but I laughed out of how he tried reasoning how boost works.

Him: So how does the boost work do you push like a button or something?
Me: Ohh uhh no it automatically happens when i floor it
Him: Soo when you floor it the nitrous kicks in?
Me: Nonono no nitrous, I have a turbo
Him: (Puzzled look) so how does it go fast then without nitrous?
Me: (Basically I explain the basics of how a turbo works, how pressure builds up because of hot side spinning pulling in air via cold side blah blah blah)
Him: Ohhh ok so when you let off the gas is when the boost kicks in
Me: (Puzzled Look)
Him: Like in need for speed when you push the button your boost goes down just like when you let off the gas

I couldn't hold it in and I bust out laughing, he wasn't grasping it and I felt kinda bad for laughing but he then claimed he was going to take a physics class soon so hopefully that will help him understand better.

"You have a Subaru and you don't race it?" I said street racing was for high school punks and he stopped talking.

Yeah, what the f*ck is up with this? I've heard this too many times for it to be just one person's ignorance and I can't fathom where people got it from. Maybe because Subaru Outback and Outback Steakhouse sound the same?

flooring it on the highway passing people with the passengers first time in it, he always tries acting like a bada$$ saying how he's not afraid of anything...

Me: *floors it, accelerates as car gets louder and external wastegate makes noise while passing cars*

Him: What the #%*#! Holy @&$%! Christ slow the %#@& down were going to #%*£ing die! $%#€£¥•*^%^€£¥€£>%#&$&$ and so on and so on until I slowed down.

When I did a quick launch and a 1st to 2nd pull and kindly asked me to stop because I was emotionally destroying him.

Recently, I've been going to the car wash often to keep the salt off my roads. Everytime someone there hears my car running, they ask why my rods are knocking. It makes me giggle when no one knows how our engines are naturally tap happy.

I was going from my home church to our 2nd campus and had to give our worship pastor a ride...As he's walking towards the car he stares at it funny like he's never seen one. After he gets in I turn the car on (I have a catback) and he says "gosh, what kind of engine is in this thing?"
So i explained to him and he was stunned at the fact it was a 4 banger...
After a while of driving he says "I wouldn't be able to have this car. I'd get too many speeding tickets. How do you do it?"
Me..."if i do anything it'll be in a road that is less public, so i dont get too much attention...do you want to feel what is it that i do?"
Him..."no no no...thank you i believe you"
It made me proud of my subie...still making great impressions

Just picked up a brand new 2013 WRB base hatch last week and drove it to work.

Coworker#1: Is that your new Hyundai out there?
Me: What?! Its a Subaru!
Coworker#1: Oh sorry, it looks nice though
Coworker#2: Geez way to degrade his car

Anyone with an older impreza (93-01) might understand.

I can understand his confusion, since I was THE ONLY car there, around all lifted trucks/jeeps. I still thought it was funny. A lot of people underestimate Subaru's AWD though.
I was looking through old posts and it seems you have already told this story on my page 231, coincidence...I think not.

I really couldn't care less if the general population on the street knows what make/model/year/etc my car is. Just because I care about cars (and even I can't identify them all on the road), doesn't mean others do. Seriously. Would you think it's fair if someone got upset at you for asking what new Ford they drove, and it turned out to be a Chevy? Come on.

I've mistaken plenty of car makes/models if they're either new or I've never seen them before. And Subaru (even though growing), still isn't that big. Get off your high horses.

I mean, yeah, sometimes it's a funny story because of something specific they say or do... but really, if you're just posting because you're upset or unsettled...
