Everyone except flyboy1100 appeared able to understand what was going on. Nobody else voted more than 3 times, which would be the normal thing to do. flyboy1100 voted 7 times. So, I took out his entries and re-ran the numbers. Here are the new answers:

MTH 36.75
CTH 34.50
MTM 29.80
CTM 28.59
MTC 27.00
CTC 24.75

A couple of things pop out. One is that the numbers are surprisingly close to the EPA estimates - only reversed. That is, within one mpg, all of the answers to our little poll here match the other transmission. The other thing is that applying the range difference, the MT5 appears to fall within the variability of the "other 12" in the CVT Problem thread.

I guess it's no wonder the MT5 people were saying the complaints of the CVT people were in our imagination - they're getting our numbers!!! (that's what they said when they were being nice anyway).

Please use this thread for posting real world MPG figures
I did, I just posted numbers for every possible situation I normally drive in. Which is 6 (3 highway, 1 mixed, 2 city) now that I look at it again, it was not 7-8

I voted for summer/winter conditions, hence 6 votes

I responded to the poll, but only to the MT mixed, because all of my driving involves a little bit of city and a little bit of highway.

So we have 32 respondents, including me, and about 80,000 Imprezas on the road.

I think it is safe to say we can start drawing conclusions from this data!

Updated results with 35 voters, 72 votes (not counting flyboy of course):

24.90 _____ CVT City
26.00 _____ MT City
28.20 _____ CVT Mixed
29.80 _____ MT mixed
33.75 _____ CVT Highway
35.40 _____ MT Highway

So, the MT gets 1.5 mpg better than the CVT (all weighted the same), which means that since the CVT is rated at 2 above the MT, it is still getting 3.5 better than the CVT compared to its "EPA" rating.

Or, in other words the MT gets over 2 mpg above its EPA rating while the CVT gets 1.5 below its rating...

Guess what douchebag, the poll allowed multiple votes, I voted for summer and winter of actual mpg my car achieves. Your stats are **** anyway, get a life.

There are 35 people who voted, some voted multiple times, some only once. There was very little guidance as to what OP wanted.

How many imprezas are actually on the road vs the people who have voted I this poll? The sample size is too small to have any statistical importance

Agreed, sample size is currently too small.

For anyone who wants to do analysis with more data, here are the last 20 fuel-ups for every driver of a 2012/2013 Impreza from fuelly. As of this morning the data includes 276 drivers and 3,931 fill-ups. Data includes transmission types and per-driver averages as well.

Since this argument is going to last forever we might as well use real data.

Oh really? Where is that information? What is the Consumer Reports mpg compared to the EPA mpg?

If you don't have that you aren't even blowing smoke, you are just admitting you don't even know how to compare the EPA numbers with the real world numbers.

the numbers quoted were epa, I don't have a cr membership but if I did I would grab the real world mpg for those specific cars that would be a proper comparison, 4 door awd sedans and 5 door awd hatchbacks then I would be aware if I spent my money wisely on my awd vehicle.

I didn't say that wasn't the case.

Last time I looked at it the CVT vs. 5MT averages were very close, slightly favoring 5MT. The variance of the CVT drivers was larger - there were more of them getting both better and worse mileage than the 5MT drivers. The 5MT drivers were more tightly clustered around the average. This new data includes more drivers and more fuel-ups so it could have changed.

I don't have time to go through the data again right now. I just wanted to post it so that we could at least have as much data as possible for these discussions.

Thanks. The range definitely looks like this discussion sounds. A lot wider range for the CVT, reflecting the higher number of lackadaisical drivers who are kind of the opposite of the aficionados with their MT's. Despite that, the MT still gets higher mpg...

A base Impreza is not an "aficionado's" car.

On Fuely the '13 Impreza gets better mileage with the CVT, and has a significantly bigger sample size.

Aficionado is a relative term. People who choose manual transmissions are typically aficionados compared to those who choose CVT's.

And no, the MT gets better mpg than the CVT on fuelly.

That's like saying an aficionado prefers a certain brand of ramen noodles.

As far as the numbers on Fuelly go, you better do the math on that, because I did, and you're wrong. Autos got better mileage for the '13, and that's with having a sample size five times bigger than that for manuals.

So he has a theory that the 5 speed actually gets better mileage than a CVT, independent of the person driving it, or the type of driving, or the speed at which it is driven.

The fun thing is he throws out his theory, and others start quoting it as fact, because, hey, they heard somewhere that 5speeds do better than the CVT, and everyone knows that CVT's do lousy in the MPG department (please ignore the CVT drivers who then pipe in that they are getting good mileage, and it may be because of the type of driving they do or how they drive it).

I among others started laughing at him on the MPG Warranty thread when he posted his personal scangauge results showing he could achieve 36mpg at 60mph, after he had already told us it was completely impossible.

He is mad because he drives average speeds above 70mph and the car does not return EPA numbers for his type of driving. So in this case he is right, driving at the speeds he drives it will be impossible for him to get those EPA numbers.

What he misses in his personal theory/fact is that the 5 speed turns higher RPM than a CVT at the same highway speeds, so his MPG's would be even worse with a 5 speed for his type of driving, but those are facts that do not comport with his version of reality.

So for him 5 speeds do better than CVT's for MPG's, that is a fact!

If the Impreza is ramen noodles, then the CVT Impreza is ramen noodles without the seasoning packet.
