I recently purchased a 99 legacy sedan 2.2L, initial research revealed it is one of the DOHC EJ22's...
I have since heard much deliberation on whether or not this motor even exists. Short of taking off the valve covers. I called Roy Robinson Subaru of Marysville Washington and a service writer confirmed it was dohc. However, since my initial research and his word I have yet to find any information on the all mighty interwebs to support this. Is it some rare ej222? I would greatly appreciate some real knowledge on this. If it helps my vin is 4s3 bd4354 x6260226

I think you have a SOHC EJ22. As far as I know, there has never been a DOHC EJ22. The EJ25 that was available on the GT and Outback models of the Legacy was a DOHC.

Also, you can just look at the plastic timing cover to be certain. If it looks like this:
![]() ...it is a SOHC If it looks like this: ![]() You've got a DOHC... |

Glad you got your answer, hope it really is a dohc. That would be neat

Ha, it would be, but the only DOHC of that year was the EJ25...I'm not too well versed in Subaru's overseas engines, but a quick google search tells me that the only EJ22 DOHC was a turbocharged model only available overseas...like I said, that's beyond my knowledge.

Someone may have just swapped heads. Although on a N/A motor I don't really see the point, but not to say it could have happened.

Also, just check on top of the block to see what is stamped on it. If it says ej22, then my vote is someone swapped the heads.
