Default 2012+ OEM Fujitsu Ten Navigation HU to Non-Nav WRX transplant!

Replaced my original info with more detailed info from wrexed1.

Thanks to this thread, and David's guidance and harnesses (thank you again!!), and a fully functional ebay Fujitsu Ten HU out of a 12' (pd $300- Subaru quoted me 2k), the installation was very straight forward. As this thread/ discussion enabled me to perform the install, I've tried to document everything in a useable format to hopefully fill in any gaps for any of you looking to do this, as a thank you to the community and the service it provided to me.

Below are all of the parts you'll need for the the installation, and a general how-to. And for those of you who want to use satellite radio and don't want to rip down your headliner to replace your oem antenna/ wiring (if you have a 13, your antenna does not have an xm receiver built in, nor is it pre-wired), I included the adapters you'll need in order to run any aftermarket xm antenna into the HU.

Just an FYI, the interface on the Fujitsu Ten is great, and the sound quality is much improved. The FM reception, even with the HD radio is still laughable, but I feel like that's a Subaru hallmark. My only gripe is the BT speaker phone. The only time anyone can make out what I'm saying is parked with the engine off (and yes, I have my mic volume max'd). Other than that, all steering wheel controls and functions work as-stock. All console mounted inputs (aux and USB) function correctly.

__________
Purchased from David(SVXdc):

(1) 10+6-pin reverse harness (w/ illum.-)
(1) 20-pin forward harness (w/ illum.- & long 3 SWC)
(1) 28-pin harness assembly (w/ VSS, r.gear, SWC, 16-pin>aux/mic)
(1) 16-pin rear camera harn. (w/ p.brake bypass, 6V, Impreza loop)
(1) Subaru USB cable (to male USB A)

Purchased Separately:

(1) GPS Antenna ($12) http://www.ebay.com/itm/231020270302...84.m1439.l2649
(1) FM Antenna Adapter ($13) http://www.ebay.com/itm/400494961719...84.m1439.l2649
(1) Lexus reverse USB adapter ($10) http://www.ebay.com/itm/190850462942...84.m1439.l2649
(1) OEM Subaru Nav Bezel ($72) This really isn't necessary.. Other than the corners being rounded(vs square), and the HU sitting a bit more flush (vs recessed using standard bezel) normal human beings really wouldn't be able to recognize any discernible difference. I'm advising to save your cash on this one(see pics below).

Camera

(1) Sony CCD Camera ($21) http://www.ebay.com/itm/251260310863...84.m1439.l2649 And yes, it may be silly cheap but it works great. It's a 520p CCD with really good day and night resolution.

Satellite Radio

(1) XM antenna adapter ($9) http://www.ebay.com/itm/150617057429...84.m1439.l2649
(1) GPS Antenna ($12) http://www.ebay.com/itm/231020270302...84.m1439.l2649
__________

The XM was the biggest PITA for me. The proprietary square plug was impossible to adapt, but the GPS antenna's plug is remarkably close (with a tiny bit of dremel magic). So essentially, I purchased 2 of the same GPS antennas listed above, using 1 for the GPS obv. and the other to splice into the "XM antenna adapter," essentially creating a patch cord go-between to be used to mate any aftermarket XM antenna to this HU.

Here's the kit of parts after soldering and heat shrinking David's harnesses (minus the USB wiring which I received after taking this, and the XM patch cord). Note, the spool on the right.. red is to VSS, black is to reverse gear. David supplies you with color decoders and instructions for his harnesses as well, so there's no guess work involved. The nav unit I purchased didn't have the mounting brackets but the stock HU's swapped directly over.

I used 3m tape to affix the GPS ant to the top of the cluster, beneath the hood. Reception is perfect. FYI, the wrx dash pops apart easier than my childhood Camaro's. The hood is held on by 4 clips and pulls straight off, and the radio bezel with another 5 plastic clips, so don't get intimidated. I pulled the cluster out (2 screws..I know..) to route the GPS antenna wiring to the back of the HU. I also pulled the hvac duct in the stack to free some space so I had room to organize the myriad of HU harnesses(2 screws).

You'll need to tap 0-3 wires from the vehicle harness depending on what you plan on installing. An easy access point for the VSS is through the harness under the glove box. It's pink/green. I connected it at first but found it to be utterly useless and quite the nuisance so wound up disconnecting. The reverse gear wire can be accessed through the harness above the passenger side kick panel, if you're connecting a reverse cam. It's brown and yellow. You'll also need a 12v switched power lead, which will connect to the cam +. I tapped into the switched 12+ from the clock harness *see emboldened revision/note below. This one is brown/white. If you're not doing a cam, and don't mind the GPS getting confused in tunnels, you don't have to hack into anything.

I mounted the cam in center of the trunk garnish. The honkin connectors hard wired to the cam itself were able to fit through the stock hole in the trunk (where the plate light wires exit). Just shoved the grommet through, pushed the cam wiring through next to it, and pulled the grommet back out to it's original position. This HU has to sense a cam within 5 sec of boot up or the cam function will be overridden, which means the camera needs to be wired to the switched-on as mentioned(clock). Correction: the camera harness David supplied has a red wire. This can be used as the switched power supply as well.

As for the XM, this was my solution:

Splice the GPS connector into the XM adapter. Viola- your patch cord. You'll need to shave a bit of extrusion on the GPS connector but it's super simple and very easy to do with a file or dremel (shown here). As I said earlier, this was..a source of stress for me. You would need to purchase approx $300 of hardware from Subaru (antenna body, mast, wiring) and drop the liner if you wanted to go stock appearance. I was unable to source a splice cord or square terminal adapter to do this any other way than to splice the 2 seemingly unrelated cables. I mounted the xm ant on my trunk, but you can place it on the rear deck under the glass (barring metallic tint on the rear window) or on the dash.

I have tons of photos covering just about every phase of the install if anyone needs specifics. Good luck.

Updated with info about required parts. I finished connecting all the harness. Waiting for my antenna adapter & GPS antenna to come in and I'll attempt to install this. Hopefully this weekend. I'll have to wait on the USB and the bluetooth mic to see if SVXdc or I can come up with some solution. I really want USB function so that'll be what I focus on more. Hopefully I'll hear some good news from SVXdc about it soon.

curious you would think the 28 pin is hard to find; I got mine off a fleabay vendor. the usb cable and satellite radio antenna on the other hand I have absolutely no luck whatsoever. For GPS I used GPS Antenna for ECLIPSE AVN726E AVN5533 AVN5435 AVN30D. The common Motorola antenna adapter won't work with the F10. I had to get the adapter of a Toyota/Lexus.

I could not find a place to buy a single 28pin connector. I saw whole sale people from china that has them available in bulk. May be I don't know enough about this stuff. Sounds like you done similar project? Thanks for the GPS antenna suggestion. I'll let you know if I get any info about the USB port. For the Satellite antenna you'll have to buy it from Subaru.

What is advantage of this unit over a WRX Nav or aftermarket unit?

This is like what's the advantage of an STi over an Evo. Just personal preferrence. I like the look of it. Plus I got it for $375 shipped so that pretty much beat most aftermarket HU as most in that price point doesn't have Navigation. For me I just like the OEM stuff.

While it is OEM it doesn't have an OEM fit with the bezel as the corners look funny. As long as you are happy though that's all that counts.

Yeah you need the JDM bezel to make it less funky. But it isn't very noticable so I don't really mind. it isn't bugging me so no reason to spend $60. I am very happy with this project. Once I get USB to function it'll be much better.

No, you need the Nav bezel that came stock with that HU in the first place.

it does look pretty good. You can make it plays pictures slideshow while listening to music too.

So after a couple days of using this HU. I have to say it is a BIG improvement over the base HU. The sound is MUCH better. It will distort a bit at higher volume + High low frequencies. There's a SVC (Speed Volume Control) option that seems to make the volume a lot louder. I'll be install a pair of Infinity Kapa 63.9i in the front soon. There probably won't be much improvement but I already have the speakers.

The 28 pin connector is common with a lot of Toyota vehicles. I bought mine from a fleaBay seller Chinaskyintl, though I don't see the account active on fleaBay anymore. You can try http://www.skyinternational.com.cn/, which appears to be the same group of people.

I already have the connector. Got it from SVXdc he got it all wired up and stuff. Now I just need the connector for the USB port.

My GPS antenna came in today. The plug on the antenna was a bit bigger than the socket on the HU. I did some modification to the plug on the antenna and got it to work. GPS works very good without VSS so far. No delay in turns. I might not connect the VSS cable if it works fine without it. Waiting for SVXdc to reply to me about the USB cable still. He forgot the Hirose connector. Once I have that connector I might actually connect each cable to each pin in the HU USB socket using a small quick disconnect. This is probably not the best secure option for this but I think I'll do until I or someone can find the connector to make the harness.

Looking good so far!

I'm glad you solved the problem with the aux input -- I was worried that I had connected a wire wrong.

I'm surprised that your WRX's mic works. I need to check more thoroughly, but I had found that a WRX with the FT nav has a different part number for the map light cluster than a WRX with the CZ624U1 (non-nav HU). The only difference would be the mic module. Both nav and non-nav mics are amplified. I figured the two used different gains.

I contacted a BRZ owner who is the parts manager for a Subaru dealership. He found the USB cable for the BRZ (86273CA000, MSRP $121 ). I didn't realize that it is wrapped together with a portion of the aux harness. The online price is about $89 plus shipping, which is still too much when all you want it for is the USB plug.

I've asked him to check the similar USB harness in Impreza/WRX/STI with the FT nav. I know the harness is a separate piece in those cars, so I'm hoping it will be slightly cheaper.

As for finding the FT USB plug as a separate piece, I don't know the manufacturer or model number for that. I'll need a Subaru or Toyota owner who has a HU with this socket to look closely at the plug on their car's USB harness. There should be a manufacturer's name or logo on it. That's how I figured out that Hirose makes the USB connectors for the non-nav cars (in the picture here, I saw the "HRS" on the plug and knew it was Hirose).

I'm fairly sure that Hirose is not the manufacturer for the Toyota USB connector -- I didn't spot anything like it in their catalog. There are many other companies.

Quote:
Here are pictures of the harness plug and socket from a Toyota:
It looks like the core of a USB "B" socket might fit. Here's one:
Here's a PDF drawing showing the dimensions of the block in the center with the contacts (link).

That is the part you would normally find inside something like a printer. So it's a little strange that the Toyota connectors use the genders backwards.

I have checked, and the FT nav's pin-out is not the same as a USB B plug/socket (the pin positions are scrambled).
Be very careful before you try to shove something into the FT nav's USB socket. If you damage it and then we do find the proper plug, you won't be able to use it. Trust me, you really don't want to solder to the HU's PC board.

I'll let you know what the parts guy says about the Impreza USB cable.

Hmm that's a lot different than I imagined. I thought there was 4 pins coming out of the FT USB Socket so I was just going to use those pin quick disconnect and connect it to the hirose connector from you. I guess it does look like a USB B socket but I highly doubt that will fit in there. I believe you will be able to find something In the mean time I'll try to resist the temptation to buy the harness for $90 lol.

Also SVXdc I didn't receive the hirose plug with the package. I sent you an email about it. I can wait until you can find a proper plug to connect to that Hirose connector and send it to me all at one. Hopefully I'll hear more good news from you about this soon.

Got the Metra 40-LX21 adapter for the radio antenna. While HD radio is pretty cool, Utah only has a few HD channels and only a couple of them are for music.

The FM601US came out of a 2012 Impreza or Crosstrek. I don't think that model (or ones from a WRX/STI or BRZ) includes a sub out. There's a small chance that one from a Forester does (but Subaru's wiring diagrams don't show it).

Pictures and pin-outs of the rear harnesses of the STI version are here (see posts 4 and 9 in that thread). The Impreza version looks the same except for the model numbers.

I don't know if it has sub output. Belows are some diagram I found while researching this HU. As you can see there are 2 connector not identified. Might be the sub-out but I don't know.
