Default Moving Forward

AKIC Members,

Over the last several months we have seen our board take a turn in the wrong direction. There has been a lot of negative postings, taking veiled jabs, calling other members out, taking threads down rabbit trails and tensions have been rising. I know many of the long time members have their thoughts on why this is happening but regardless of why, we need to move forward.

There is a lot of new blood on the boards who have joined over the last year... several just moved up to Alaska, some new owners and some who just bumped into AKIC while surfing the web. These are folks that are looking to meet other subaru enthusiasts, they likely have a lot of questions about their cars, what mods are available, vendors, events or Alaska in general and i know this group has alot of experience to offer.

I know my posting isn't an instant fix but I wanted to start off with a clean slate, a new beginning (hey, it is Spring). With that said, we will be addressing any members that purposely post whore, flame, troll, disrespect other members, mods etc. Additionally if you see a thread that you feel is headed for the same fate feel free to report it.

Summer's around the corner... we will be having meets, autocross events, car shows and many other opportunities to meet face to face this year... let's enjoy it.

Finally, you'll notice this thread isn't locked, feel free to post your thoughts on how we can move AKIC forward.

I agree with you Dubya, I hope the tempers ease when the winter "cabin fever" goes away with the melting snow.

I'm looking forward to a fun summer of wrenching on my cars and trucks, as well as a bunch of my friends vehicles. There has been talks of a group Anchorage trip. A Fairbanks dyno day. Locally we'll have some car washes and BBQ's, cruises and car shows. The summer is looking good.

Quoted for future reference and that this applies to EVERYONE period no exceptions at all!

Yes things have gotten heated around here lately and frankly my opinion of that is its bull****, there really isn't any need for non-civil behavior in this forum and that goes for you young pups and us older grey shot dogs as well.

The thing is folks alot of disagreements on here happen because everyone has a different perception or comprehension of what was written and that boys and girls is how more then half these damn arguments even get started.

Just my opinion , agree or disagree that's up to you all.

Our join dates say a lot. Monthly meets may be a good thing to bring back. We have these semi annual meets and drives, which is cool, don't get me wrong, but it was never that way for the members that founded AKIC. We were a tight knit group and few are still around, but we remember those days. Would love to get those days back.

It's not just about posting. It's about being a community that actually meets. There are install meets, drives, lunch and drive meets, photoshoots, and various other get togethers. Would be nice to see more of that this Sprong and summer

Sure does WES.

My main beef..there is a double standard in effect. The rift started back when you became a moderator, Ralph. You need to own that.

Which rules are going to be enforced and to what level and on to whom? All to Ralph's choosing. How convenient. That is called tyranny. When you are in the good graces of the tyrant, doing as they say, everything is 'hunky dory' ….but when you aren't…everything you say is censored, edited, or deleted.
That is no place that I want to be a part of.

People projecting their views into what I am actually saying, seemingly without even reading the words I've typed or taking the worst possible meaning of them, without even asking for clarification. 18 yo Caleb saying that I should read the rules for the first time, so that I could better follow them? HE projected an attack into my words, when there was none. Sounds like someone has gotten a bit too big for his britches all of a sudden and how did he get that way? He wasn't like that at all a few short months ago. Several people sense that because he is your nephew, he is treated with special status these days. I hear this on a daily basis in texts amongst LONG TIME members.

This whole thing on akic…its a real mess. Kiwi leaving. I don't even know if it is repairable. A bunch of hurt feelings on both sides and it doesn't seem to be getting any better. Many of us feel that with the nepotism to your little clique and this touting the Element automotive stuff has become such an obvious, over the top thing, that it has lost any validity. Those ARE good guys! They do their thing and that is great. I hope the best for them but there are other businesses in the Alaska that support our community too. This is not a one size fits all sort of place. I've supported them with business and use other places too.

This successive parroting of you, BJ & marshall carter, caleb and now kiwi feels a lot like what the 3 carter's used to do a few short years ago... ganging up on someone who has a contrary opinion. You seem to think that if you all say it enough times, it is somehow going to become everyones' truth. It's really pathetic.

I predate you here BY YEARS Ralph, many of us do. Only a very few of us post anymore from the OG squad. There is a reason for that. You got the slot to be a moderator (something that I would never want), given to you by your friend, Kiwi. So be it.

You weren't voted in. Does that give you the right to decide what people think or want to talk about? We were here and established long before you even joined nasioc. How overbearing of you,... taking away people's voices. Did you really, honestly think that you actually have that kind of power or that there aren't going to be negative consequences because of it? Stop trying to LORD OVER us. Quit choosing sides.

Kiwi was never like this before you became a mod. Things functioned fine without much moderator involvement at all. In supporting you, that has now painted him into a corner. Our other long time moderator, Chris (squad907) has never acted in such a fashion, nor was there need for it.

This place used to be fun. It used to be a place to let it fly and let off some steam. That would blow over and people would eventually get back to our camaraderie in it's own good time. Things worked themselves out. It used to be a community.

Now…with the meddling you've been doing, BECAUSE of your involvement….people hold onto their resentments. It carries over to the events and meets. Things never gets resolved because you quash it here or delete entire threads. People need to blow off steam and to get things off their chest. It's natural to relieve stress. People don't sit around and play patty cake all the time in real life. Do you expect them to always be PC? You don't have to continually interfere. Its not your job to control conversations or to limit what people want to talk about. You are trying to act as the big brother, thought police. Stop it.

Case in point: You and KIWI all but quashed my Thanksgiving night winter drive meet thread. Didn't matter much to me and Sonny. We still had our fun…safely.
You two simply ruined everyone else's fun. What is wrong with spontaneity?
You allow people to continually use AKIC to meet up at Bartlett jeopardizing our Autocrosses there. You've even participated in at least one gathering there yourself. A short time after killing my attempts at organizing a drive, you allowed a Tribal organized Hatcher's pass night run and you even participated in it too. It made no sense then and still doesn't. It's called meddling and selective enforcement. I guess that means when you are involved it is A-okay, and when you aren't, suddenly, it isn't allowed. Most here are adults and can decide for themselves what they want to participate in. It's called freedom of choice.

Editing my posts. Changing single words ("Feeble", …I mean, really? How did that violate anything in the forum rules?) to make things suit your taste. That is called megalomania. The question people should be asking themselves is do we need a micromanaging, meddling moderator. If they do want that, then they need to look in the mirror and say BAHHHHHHHHH! And follow the herd. Stop trying to mollify what people say. I choose my words carefully and deliberately.

I have not changed who I am or how I post since my join date in 2002. You have attempted to change AKIC under your direction.

I'll say this…I will not be handled or controlled. Trying to do so only strengthens my resolve. I know how to handle myself and mind my P's & Q's. I'm not some big, bad evil person. I don't need someone continually trying to reel me in. All of our differences make us stronger. Attempts at homogenization will be met with resistance.

It is only out of respect for what we all once had that I am even engaging this in the first place.

We don't need a shepherd. We can follow our own paths, thanks. We've been doing just fine without 'your brand" of guidance. Paul makes a good point with his comment…."looking forward to a NEW DIRECTION IN AKIC FOR OUR COMMUNITIES SAKE". Boy, I'll say.

What ever happened to Americans being free thinkers and having the grit to speak their minds? Am I of the few that still has a spine?

Remember, you asked.

I haven't had a problem myself with any moderators or members alike since I've been back regularly visiting AKIC. I will say it was pretty painful to watch the train wreck that led to Kiwi and seascooby leaving. All over a simple question/suggestion about Element creating a thread in the vendor section to advertise themselves. Which somehow got misconstrued into an attack on Element and led to 2 members leaving. Awesome.

Eh just my two cents but from way left field. I believe Element and P3 outta get special treatment here on AKIC. They choose to be legit vendors and pay thier dues. From my understanding that is somewhere in the rules. If someone wants to suggest other shops or services thats fine but pricing and contact info should be done in pm. I understand that people here work or are sponsored by other shops but these two vendors pay for the right to advertise thier services here.

Not trying to take sides or anything.

They should get special treatment in that they are the only vendors allowed to post parts/service on AKIC/NASIOC. Regular members not affiliated with a shop should still be able to post whatever they want when providing reviews/recommendations about non-NASIOC vendors.

A non-nasioc vendor or somebody affiliated with a vendor should never be posting pricing or contact info in a thread or in pm. A regular member though should be able to say I had good service done at _________ and it only cost me $____ and ask to talk to _______ because he really knows his **** if they want.

What wrong with having meets at Bartlett?

Funy how you oldschool guys complain on how "back in my day" but take no effort into whats going on TODAY. AMA (Alaska Modified Autos) regularly hold meets, cruises, and all kinds of fun stuff. I see Mr.Paul aka retraC at every meet i've been to. AMA is not just 1 make of car, its a group of cars guys who come together as car guys. Meet, greet, chit chat, and all that good jazz. You of the oldschool look down on the new generation, or so you make it seem, and you guy really have not the clue as to whats going on today.

Look down upon our decisions for meets at brobell or at Bartlett HS. We arent doing anything wrong at all. Yea we play in the snow because its fun. Not everyone participates in those shinanigans, some just come to say whats up. The school isnt coming across any damage. No one is there to be bothered, so whats the hurt? Cops have come through, they've simply asked us to leave. Ok, no big whoop. Cops told us the same thing when we werent allowed to skateboard at a certain spot.

Are we going to stay Oldschool vs Newschool or are we going to come together as a community?

This is a private website and as moderators we reserve the right to edit any and all content of the forums.

You have to either accept this as the way Nasioc works and not as a personal slight against you or ignore it as it is not going to change. Sorry

You say that you do not like people projecting their views on you, but you immediately follow that up with projecting your view on Caleb. This insanity has to stop. You all need to move on from taking this personal

The way that you are dealing with this issue is a major reason for me wanting to leave Mike. You cannot be reasoned with and you do not budge from your side of the argument. You use your realtionships and turn everybody onto your side of the issue. You are a divider in AKIC. Ralph and I have reached out to you a number of times to work with us but you go back to your old ways. Extremely frustrating as we both respect you as a key member of the community but the way that you deal with the issues on Nasioc forces us to respond on the only way that we can.

Its repairable... We have two choices....

1) Get over it..... life is to short, move on, it is only personal if you make it personal... do not carry something that happens on a website into your personal life

2) Leave.... It may be for a short term to get a new look at the situation or it may be permanent as in that you have out grown this site....

I am truly neutral on this "Nepotism" concern and I have not seen any actions on how Ralph moderates in a way to defend Caleb.

You have to understand, some times I post on here just as Kiwi the member, not Kiwi the moderator. Is that tough for you to distinguish the difference? I am sure but we are allowed to joke around, post pictures, add to a discussion and talk about family as a member and not be used against us in the way that we moderate..... Also if a family member posts something that is up to that family member.... it is not fair for you to tie it to anyone else that is related to them!!!

Here is the rules that we as moderators have to enforce for Vendors.

  1. Vendors who wish to promote products or service to the club must be registered with a Vendor status. Information on becoming a vendor can obtained by writing to vendor@nasioc.com. Please use "NASIOC Vendor Request" in the subject of the e-mail.
  2. The NASIOC vendor fees help pay for operation costs of this site in order to keep the site free for all other members. A Vendor label is located below the vendors screen name to identify Registered Vendors of the site. Non-registered vendor advertisements on this site are not allowed. Please report any advertisement by a non-registered vendor to the moderator of the forum immediately. For more information please visit this thread here: http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show...readid=1692256
So do we promote Vendors, heck yes we do! As a result on their funding we get to enjoy this website with out any charges. Again to look into it more than that is unfair!

That being said, if a member talks about their experience with a local business and recommends them.. all power to them..

Things that are not cool

1) If someone works for a business or is associated to that business that is not a vendor and promotes them at every time a question is asked on who they should use....
2) Copies links or blatantly is marketing a non vendor business.

This is simply not true and I really do not know how to respond to this... it all seems very personal and we may be just a little sensitive to this because this issue has gone on so long.

Now we come to the core of the issue....

To the broader group, I spoke with three people about becoming a moderator when I decided I needed some support modding Nasioc.

1) Seascooby
2) Nomad
3) Racer Dubuya

I asked them all if they were interested as I taking on a new role within my company and felt that someone else who was on more than I was to help. I asked all three because they were active members, involved in the community for a number of years. In the end I made the decision on Racer Dubuya not because he was my friend but I believed that he would be the best person for the job. No reflection on any of the other two.

If you have any issues with the way that we moderate then take it up with Nick the site owner, do not voice your issues here and try to undermine our roles. It does not help the group and will only end in you getting banned...

Mike, That is the intent of this thread was to give a clean slate... not to cut open old wounds... Please, please, please let this go and move on!

Bull****! I have to delete posts, close threads, point people continuously. Maybe you didn't see it but your actions lately have required us to do a lot of moderating on posts that impact you so maybe you are more aware of it than in the past.

You know at this point I am a little worn out and cannot answer the rest of your post....

You have three choices

1) Move on, Ralph is the moderator and that is not going to change, take advantage of this thread and put your difference behind you.

2) Continue on the path that you have created and be banned...

3) Leave on your own accord

Personally I hope you pick number 1 as you have a lot to contribute but there is now a line in sand and we cannot move off it. Sorry my friend.

This thread has completed the task it was designed for.

It brought attention to an issue, encouragement for moving forward, ideas of how to address specific post, allowed some to vent, has underscored the few that have toxic ideas and feel a need to vent in a public forum and specifically addressed forum rules and consequences.

In regards to personal attacks, I don't respond in the public forum, I always encourage PM or face to face meetings, if not I can only assume the other party isn't looking for a solution.

For those of you who have dropped off because of drama, I hope to see you post more. I am encouraged by the PMs I have received.

Here's to a great Summer!

Thanks Ralph, this was needed, a big picture in the end, instead of he said she said or did momentary BS.

Umm everything?

No one cares that regular meets are hosted at locations such as Taco Bell but people do in fact care seeing continuous meets held at Bartlett because many of you seem to think it's some kind of free open playground for your cars. That school is one of the few locations left that has permitted autocross sanctioned events and many of you hosting these weekly meets threaten the possibility of that continuing. What you fail to realize is that just because you weren't arrested for reckless driving doesn't mean the reports of what's going on doesn't get pushed up the pipeline. What's amusing is using a Skateboarding comparison to try and justify this matter. Considering that it's locations such as this that will eventually get fed up of people skateboarding and damaged property, only to eventually have no Skateboarding signs posted up. Guess what happens when it involves cars? No autocross allowed ever again.

It doesn't matter if it's not SubZero, Porsche or SCCA being there, what matters is they will fondly remember it's the same type of cars usually involved in the events hosted. You guys risk jeopardizing a relationship and understanding that has been in effect for years now. What's even more offensive is that many of you that do this on a frequent basis aren't even competitors/volunteers for autocross events held. This has nothing to do with Old School vs. New School, the only reason it may seem like the older group is because they've been competing for years and many of them also help with process of keeping things running. They may be the more vocal bunch but I assure you they aren't the only ones tired of this going on.

Have we all taken time to play at Bartlett before? Sure. However, it's when people start making this some kind of regular thing and advertising it to form larger groups that it becomes an issue. Do you think the cops are the only ones reporting the situation? You do realize there is overnight security or janitorial services at every High School in Anchorage, especially Bartlett. They do and will report what's going on and usually they are the ones who make the call to police to come by, as well as make the calls/emails to superiors in the district. Also keep in mind that Bartlett is no longer a quiet isolated spot in Anchorage. Tikatnu has significant traffic now passing by and with it much greater attention to that area.

The community has lost it's right to compete at other locations for MUCH LESS than this and what you threaten (and when I say "you" I'm not targeting you specifically but in general the people doing this) is one of the few remaining locations these event groups have left to get authorization for. Groups that have to spend the time and money to get the permits and insurance necessary to keep things going. Something significant may have not happened yet, but it sure as hell doesn't mean it can't happen and once it does, that will be the end of it. You think there is drama now? Just wait because if it causes an end to their relationship, you'll have drama alright.

What people are simply asking for is for those of you that insist on weekly meets to be considerate of what's going on and to just find somewhere else to have your fun. At the very minimum avoid posting locations of where you intend on playing at. It's not much to ask for, if you want more respect than take the time to be considerate to those with roots buried deep into AutoSports. Many of you can always find another place to have your after hours fun but there are only so many places that events like AutoX can be officially held at.

Plenty around from the old school groups here have held meets within the last 6 months. What many of you newer blood seem to want is weekly meets like brobell and that just doesn't happen here. It never has outside of install meet ups which are usually small groups. Holding real weekly meets burns people out and eventually leads to just smaller turn outs. (Essentially they become unsuccessful and it ruins larger scale monthly meets) Most actual meets are held on a monthly basis because many have families and work commitments. Even then those larger events rarely ever turned into a rally spree afterwards. We all took the time to just hang out and shoot the ****, once people were done they went home. In the event that people wanted to drive around after they were quiet about it and it was done in a smaller group.

+1! I personally would like to see more meets like what tribal and nomad put together. Unfortunatly I was unable to attend either but was hoping we would do a few more of those style meets.

Back in the day we all would just drive around midtown and stop somewhere and Subarus would just gather. Akic post would happen after the fact.

I agree completely about the NASIOC sanctioned Bartlet rally meets(sanctioned as in threads on the subject have not been squashed). There were similar meets back in the day but they weren't publicly posted and they were held in slightly more discrete areas than on state property with 24 hr staff and posted no trespassing signs after 10 pm.

You were around during those days? And you are correct, that is exactly what happened, but we would have a monthly meet at Red Robbins or some other restaurant that would support our large group. I have pics of it some where.

Not sure about Bartlett meets, I do know that there is Taco Bell, but even then Subarus are hit and miss there. Once I return home I will have to explore these new "meeting" places.
