Default Limited AUTO A/C control question

When I have the fan setting in auto, and the vent selector in auto, the A/C turns on if I set the temperature to a cooler setting than what it is inside the cabin. My question is, I have noticed, mostly when sitting at a stop light, or drive thru, if I press the A/C button so the light goes out (and according to the manual the A/C turns off) why is it that I can hear the compressor cycle on and off?? If I want outside air (vent) then why do I need the compressor running? Better yet, why have an A/C button at all if it only turns a light on and off?

Anybody else with a Limited notice this??

If its on Auto and you set it to cooler than outside then the car is going to try to cool the air.

maybe the light is for when you are in manual mode

Per my manual - in Auto Mode everything is controled automatically. To achieve what you are attempting.. you have to go to manual mode to acomplish. The A/C light is only for manual mode. Hope this helps.

So in full auto mode, even if I push the AC button to turn it off, and the light indicates it's off, it's still going to do what it wants??

Weird, but I guess understandable. They should have made it where if you pushed it in full auto, the light doesn't turn off. Gives false indication the way it is now.

as for my mom's camry, if A/C light is off A/C is off even in full auto mode, however, car keeps the fan on so cooler air comes into the car whereas if A/C is on then cold air comes into the car.

so basically, if it's on auto, car will do whatever it takes to do to decrease or increase temperature. pressing A/C just turns on/off A/C. btw, A/C works with hot air too.

Ok well thanks for that I guess lol. I'm not sure how your mom's camry is related to this, as it's a completely different system altogether.

Yes, I understand AC works with hot air too, but not if I leave it in Auto and turn the know warmer, it will shut the AC off. Pressing the AC button in my case does nothing but turn the light off if left in full auto.

Maybe the auto function cycling on and off the AC accounts for some of the extra fuel consumption some CVT owners are complaining about?

On the left knob/control, do you have it placed in one of the "defrost" positions? (All the way right or the next two positions to the left of there, I think). If it is in any of the "defrost" positions, the A/C is automatically activated.

Defrost in any setting causes additional fuel consumption. Also the "heavy foot" and driving it like a typical AT can also effect the MPG. It just will not shift like an AT, no matter how hard you try.

For some reason (maybe better weather, I am seeing an additional 6/7 MPG in the last week).

Didn't catch that. If in Auto mode and the temperature is less than 37 degrees (I think or it may be 47 - it's in the manual), then the defrost mode will automatically engage. Ideal for cars equipped with the remote starter.

Yeah I saw that mentioned here before but when I've noticed this, it's not anywhere near that cold.

So the price for having the Limited with Auto controls is less MPG's, in part because letting the car decide when to cycle the A/C on and off instead of the driver (like in the manual temp controls) is that it turns on and off more, way more apparently.

Ah, the price of luxury. Please keep it in mind when you are complaining about the CVT's, or overrride it if you can if you are trying to maximize your mpgs.
