Sorry to hear about your oil consumption issues. More and more people are posting all the time about oil consumption problems. It really is a very frustrating situation to have to deal with.

The Mazda 3 is an excellent car! I'm really looking forward to seeing the next gen 3 later this year. It'll probably be the car that I trade in my impreza for.

To make a long story short this occurrence was the first SOA heard of (with more to follow) and they were not able to fix the problem in a timely manner, so I was able to work with SOA to get a replacement. Since then they have created a TSB to fix any of the early model Imprezas that experienced the same issue.

To SOA's credit for "giving a crap" about their customers, they sent out 5 engineers out from Japan (from FHI and Denso) to troubleshoot my car after they bought it back from me. As a good will gesture, they gave me an upgraded car.
It's great to hear you had a positive result with your car. I wish I got myself a new car but I guess oil consumption is a reoccurring problem so they know about it and don't need to buy mine back..damn
I took the level headed approach with my problem, and even though people were telling me I should go in there causing a storm I knew that it wouldn't work. It took a lot of time and patience to get the short block but in the end I got a result. It was a temporary result but at the moment it seems as though things are better then before. My oil level isn't going down as much as the previous engine, but it still really pisses me off knowing they had my car for almost 2 months and the problem is only partially fixed. As if they put a bandaid over the problem. Oh well, only time will tell. I just know that people who have hear about my problem have decided to stay away from Subaru. My girlfriend loved and wanted a Subaru as bad as I did. After she saw the crap vehicle I was handed she doesn't even want to consider it as an option. So Subaru better know its not only the one customer they are discouraging from purchasing their oil burners, but whomever that one person comes into contact with. I think I may have already discouraged 8-10(and I'm sure they pass the story on to others as well) people from getting a Subaru, and I love my Subaru! Even if it burns oil! Everything is great about it but that...and maybe a few other small things, but no car is perfect. But no car should burn this much oil either.
I doubt they will ever do anything about the problem with our FB motors. Too costly...maybe if they redesign the car again in a few years they will consider fixing it.

I don't know how Canada is, but here in the US we have lemon laws that vary from state to state. Some states dictate that if a car (within a certain age) is in the shop for longer than a period of time, you can leverage the lemon law to get a buy back. Hope Canada has some sort of lemon laws that protect the consumer!

It's a really good choice, for sure de 3 is not awd but for me to have only the awd (which subaru system is really good) as an advantage to the other brand is not enough.
Mazda is probably the japanese brand with the better: styling, handling, reliability (almost as good as honda + toyota), fun to drive... The bad side is for us in canada the resale value.

Mazdas dont seem to have as good of resale value as Subaru's here, either.
Sucks that your car is burning oil man.
I would be able to overlook the other shorcomings of the car if it didn't burn so much oil.

The bad side is also the stupid looking face on the front design.

Past Mazda 626 owner so feel free to ignore this sage advice Mazda is like Honda bad at tranny and bad 5spd if you start to have issues. The weakest part is the clutch which fails prematurely at about 15 k or so. Mazda cheapened out on the part so stop and go will get pricey. Mazda switched over to the cheaper clutch around 2010 so fun ahead. Same clutch is in the 13. Now the sky active tranny has also been experiencing issues so you are warned Mazda had been trying to narrow down the issue but a concrete solution is not in place you can check YouTube for some nice vids. Now lets talk RUST. I see lots of complaints about a few rust spots from rock strikes on the Subaru try googling Mazda rust problems and you will enjoy the picture show of cars and the massive rust problem. So I ask you oil burn or rust and tranny pick your poison.

so logged into my true delta account to see some stats the 2012 mazda 3 and impreza both have 9 reported repairs

IMP:
passenger air bag light
drained battery
heater fan not working
front drivers seat fraying
passenger window would not go down
oil consumption. Dealer updated the engine control module and problem went away
this was reported in dec 2012 by the user
cvt ecu update
steering colum slightly uncentered
and the brake recall

mazda 3
check engine light
power door locks ceased up, faulty body control unit
armerst developed indent
side mirror glass vibration
carpet loose in foot well
leak behind drivers seat (in comments section)

Oddly enough mazda owners have not reported on the transmission issue, I surmise
there may be some underreporting to true delta on this issue.

On carcomplaints.com
1 for the subie brake recall

7 for the mazda
engine
transmission
hvac
clutch
steering problems

mazda
22 complaints on nhtsa

For your true delta account, does it go into more detail about the oil consumption part? I haven't heard of this and just wanted to know what that was about

I'm the one who started the "Passenger Airbag Light!"
The light always went on only when I had a passenger in the car.

There was a problem with earlier cars that sometimes when there was a passenger in the car, and they touched the seat frame or operated an iPod/iPhone it would trigger the airbag malfunction light. This is what the Japanese engineers were troubleshooting on my car.

What does this light look like? It's not the same airbag light that turns on when a person sits/puts pressure on the passenger seat is it?

Not so - I believe it indicated that there was NOT a passenger in the seat, even though there was which would indicate that the ABS for that passenger was disabled - a gross safety issue.

An Airbag Malfunction Light on the gauge cluster is NOT the same thing as the Passenger Air Bag On indicator on the center display. But for the initial few before the sensor was adjusted; when the sensor malfunctioned it caused the passenger airbag to NOT engage when a passenger was present causing the safety issue. There was a TSB for it.

There's been a lot of post on here about the Consumer Reports test car but after 41,099 miles, Car & Driver's 5spd Sport Premium required no additional oil between changes.

Nope. They got a "good"one. Those guys are even pretty hard on equipment, as evidenced by their low mpg's.

Their 28mpg overall average is meeting the Combined MPG number printed on their window sticker.

So driven hard, it is returning the expected mpg's promised by the EPA for a 5speed Sport.
