Ugggg! This is really starting to piss me off. I have no fuel related problems, can not find any leaks ive checked multiple times, replaced all my sensors, grounds are all good, new fuel filter, ran injector cleaner...the only thing i have not done was swap my intake out. I have an aem intake on the car, its been on the car for 4 years never any problems. I dont have the stock intake nor can i put it on because of fmic piping. Words can't explain how frustrating this has been. Should i just light the car on fire and collect insurance? lol jk seriously tho any other suggestions?

Check the couplers on the piping? That was wrong with mine when it threw the CEL on.
There was a small tip pen size hole in one of my couplers so I just replaced them all.

Will this cel make the car dump more fuel to compensate for the lean code? Making my wideband read rich ?

Talking Help!

Hey guys,

I'm new to the Subaru world. I have a 04 WRX with a CAI, headers, castless downpipe, full exhaust, grimmspeed boost solenoid, and an open source tune. I just had it tuned a couple of days ago and about a day after, I got the p0171(system too lean-bank 1) code. I deleted the code and cleaned the maf. It's been almost a day now, and it hasn't come back on however when I'm at a stop my AF is reading like 16-17. It's fine when just cruising around 14.7 and 12 when I hit boost. I'm just wondering if anybody has any ideas? Thank you!

Hahaha finally after hours of frustration i fixed my car! Ended up being my aem intake! No good, i swapped it out for a turbo xs shorty intake(better fitment for my fmic) idle is now rock solid, car runs great, no more cel! I thought for sure there was no way my aem intake could be causing this, ended up swapping all my sensors and blowing alot of money. Check your intake first! Start with the cheapest fixes and work your way up. Great thread!

I just got this code the other night. 2005 STi w/ 42k miles. Im running e85 w/ a turboback, tmic, aps intake, 1k injectors, and a fuel pump. I did a hard pull to about 60 and about 2 minutes later after going 55 in cruise control, the light came on. I checked for vacuum leaks and could not find any. I reset the code and drove about 2 miles and it has not come on. I am going to clean the MAF sensor and see if that keeps it away. Is there anything i can monitor on my accessport to make sure my car is running safe? I am keeping it under 3k rpms

Sounds like something popped or broke when you were doing the pull.
Check your couplers

I just solved my P0171 problem. Turned out to be the fuel filter. I bought the car used & have no idea how long that fuel filter was on there. BTW...great thread. Very helpful with my situation. Just thought I'd add my experience. .

question 1: im getting this lean code, is there a post like this that targets your tune/stage? For instance i have a catted tbe, spt intake, upgraded 18g, running Cobb AP 18g tune.

question 2: i bought the car with the intake installed, and im thinking the intake is the problem. is it nessicary to have a CAI with an upgraded turbo?

My CEL is back again after car drove fine for a year. I solved the issue last time by replacing the MAF sensor.

I just recently got this code after changing header, and header to up-pipe gaskets. I also Seafoamed (vacuum and gas 50/50) and changed the oil the same day. I didn't disconnect any sensors, or mess with any vacuum lines.

Any suggestions on what could have happened?

I had fought this code for two weeks what a nightmare. First I cleaned my maf sensor (still cel), than checked my stock air intake for proper seal (still cel), next I changed my fuel filter still cel). Pulling hairs decided to change the upstream o2 senor (STILL CEL), than I cleaned my iacv and replaced maf sensor at the same time. Finally success! ! P0171 cel gone but idle was off and than I got the p0507 cel. And with an easy fix as mentioned by Unabomber turned key to on postion for 10 seconds ( repeat 3 times) and all is good so I hope this will help some people because if none of those fixed the original cel I was going to move on to the fuel system!

Time for me to add to this :
Code popped up today on the way home from work. I reset the ecu through romraider but the cel came back almost immediately.
Solution :
I'm an idiot. Don't go insane with dielectric grease ! Took apart all the connectors where I put liberal amounts of grease due to a momentary lapse of relative intelligence. I got electric contact cleaner from radio shack which is supposedly stronger than CRC cleaner. Sprayed all the connectors and allowed to dry. Car turned right over much more smoothly and no cel.
Tomorrow morning time to clean out coils as well as clean all grounds. Hoping this resolves the issues I've been experiencing.

Just checking in here. 2002 WRX, 165k miles, stock save for a Cobb stage 2 and a factory boost gauge pack.

CEL is on for P0171
Idle fluctuates slightly, boost gauge needle dances a bit at idle
Car falls on its face when accelerating, under boost, around 3000 rpm. Acceleration is shaky til around 4k rpm, then seems to smooth out, and pulls strong. Then hits full boost according to the boost gauge.

So far I've changed the fuel filter, checked and repaired one vacuum leak, cleaned MAFS, reset ECU.

Any thoughts as to the cause of the shaky spot from 3-4k rpm?

edit1 - will be replacing MAF sensor this week. I'm hopeful.

6/7 EDIT, New MAF sensor fixed it, all is well.

Ugh. Time for me to join the club, too. I initially was throwing both this code and P0131. I replaced the front 02 sensor with a Bosch, which cleared the P0131. The car even feels better, but the code is still there.

It's bone stock; never seen a modification in its life. I pulled the MAF sensor out to clean it, and it looks pristine. Sprayed MAF cleaner on it anyways.

My question is regarding the parts. Even though the MAF looks pristine, is there a chance it's no good? Is there some sort of voltage/resistance check I can do? A new one is $200 from Subaru (P/N 22680AA310, right?) and like many others, I'd hate to start chasing the problem.

Check for any leaks. Smallest leak could through that code!

It sounds like a leak for sure could be wrong.. I would get a shop to do a leak test of any sort.

Had the same synptoms on my 2003 WRX, 71,000 miles. Hesitation at 3-4k RPM, throwing P0171 CEL.

Tried cleaning MAS, no luck. Changed it out and it runs like a dream.

Thanks! And I hope this helps someone else!

Default Getting the P0171 only if in boost, hesitation or cut around 5k rpm

OK have a 2002 WRX, have been getting the P0171 for years, I understand there is a thread for this, I have looked it over PAINstakingly but would like to just add some conditions and what I have checked already to see what ideas may pop up. First off mods, I have An aem cai, just put in crappy no name headers and up pipe, deleted EGT but got no codes for that, replaced the headers because I had a leak just after the front O2. Have a cat back system, And cobb access port, throws the code at stage 2 93 octane or at married stock no difference. I have replaced the rear O2, I think I may have tried switching the O2's at one point to see if one or the other was bad, the power seems to suck when this CEL is up. I have replaced all the injectors, and coils, and plugs. And fuel filter. I just checked the FPR and the hose is on and intact. Also replaced the MAF back in the day. Just checked the lines on my intake all good, no loose vacuum lines, but the line off the back of the BOV has a crack but its on the nipple and not like a thru hole ya know. HAS ANYONE EVER CLEARED THIS CODE WITH A FUEL PUMP? Have a walboro 255 sitting around somewhere with the adapter kit for my wrx. my next thing is to throw on a ram air in place of the cold air I think. ANy ideas? or questions? Car idles fine, maybe a slight misfire or drop in idle, VERY SLIGHT. Also been a problem for years.

This thread is PPRICELESS! It has helped me fix countless WRX's with this code. I just resolved another one this weekend.
Turns out my friend installed a Walbro fuel pump recently. He opted to do the install via the trunk to avoid removing the rear seat. Big mistake because you can't really see what you're doing. When he put the pump in he improperly mounted the rubber gasket on the tank access cover. This caused his vacuum leak which caused the P0171 code. The dead give away was the strong fuel smell coming from the right rear of the car.
Hope this helps people!

Default 2002 WRX stock bare nipple vacuum leak on intake manifold

Came in here to post what worked for me.

2002 WRX bone stock. After a hard pull I noticed a very rough idle at a stoplight. Immediately after idling I got a CEL. Pulled it into the garage and as I turned the car off I heard a soft whistle coming from the engine bay. It had to be a vacuum leak.

CEL codes: p0171, p0301, p0302, p0303, p0304. Waited for the car to cool down and I sprayed along the intake, vacuum hoses and around the intake manifold with carb cleaner. No noticeable change in RPM. No rips in the turbo inlet hose. I found a very brittle boost solenoid hose coming from the T-fitting off the turbo and upon touching it, the thing broke. I replaced it with a hose with a similar internal diameter (uncertain if I should find a OEM hose with coupler or keep it) and cleared the CEL with my scanner. Rough idle still remained and after 10 miles of driving all codes resurfaced.

Waited for the car to cool for a few more hours to check the intercooler Y-hose and bypass valve hose recirc for rips or tears. As I pulled off the intercooler I noticed a bare nipple on the intake manifold (slightly to the right and underneath of the BPV). I shined my flashlight around the engine bay to look for a disconnected hose and found a small black cap for the nipple. Capped the bare nip, reconnected the intercooler and reset the CEL.

The car idles smooth now and CEL hasnt resurfaced for 50 miles. This thread saved me! Thanks to CirrusWRX and PaWRX for compiling a roadmap of solutions to try. This thread has been going for a decade and is still helping folks like me out. Hopefully this will help someone with a similar situation.
