Default Map Light Rattle Fix - 2008+ WRX/Sti

Maybe it is just me, but since ive put a sub in my 2012 WRX, all Ive heard is a rattle from the map light assembly with every bass tone. Applying pressure to the map lights seemed to dull the sound so I went in with some foam tape and solved the problem for good.

First off:
You need to get some foam tape - I found this roll in home depot for $8 in the air ducting isle (I couldn't find anything else in the store). This is way more than needed - but there are 5 subarus in the family and it will also be useful for the A-pillar rattle fix. The only other tool required would be a philips screw driver - but a panel removal tool will make removing the map light plastic easier.

Here is the source of rattles:

First pry the clear light off from behind. I used a panel tool, but could have just used my fingers.

Unscrew these two screws:

The panel will drop right down with just a little tug.

Apply a chunk of foam tape to these 3 clips:

And these 2 large clips:

Thats it... push the panel back in place - it will take a bit more effort but I still felt a click.

Put those 2 screws back in, and snap the clear plastic light diffuser back on.

Done! Turn up the bass and hear the difference!

This foam tape worked so well I did my radar detector where it bounces off the windshield on every bump.

And I did my A-pillars at the same time which rattle like crazy when its cold out.

Couldn't you have just bent the metal piece a little so that the detecter doesn't come in contact with the windshield? Had your issue with first installment of the same unit.

I think it wobbles less and the suction cups fall off less when the radar detector is gently leaning against the windshield - but your method would fix the noise issue. Mine was always popping off overnight when it was hanging free.

Oh I know what you mean. Have you tried using different suction cups? They come with an extra pair in the box usually. I had the same issue and switched them out. Very rarely does it dangle on one suction at the most.

Nice post. I'll have to stash it for when I do some rattle-elimination this summer.

I have one above my stereo that drives me crazy. If I put a little pressure on the dash above the radio, it goes away, so I know I can fix it. It's possible I caused it when I put my Pioneer in a while back.
