But didn't they offer the manual as the sole transmission for all Golf Rs? I love manuals (been daily-driving an Evo IX for the past seven years and love it), but when car shopping with my girlfriend, manuals aren't an option, though she was looking at a hatchback, possibly with AWD since we snowboard. I'd have pushed for a Golf R if it had a dual clutch or something, so we were eyeing an A3 hatchback, but I told her to wait since I was hoping the new A3 Sportback would be offered in the US.

Ah. I don't know if other areas got DSG or not on the Golf R.

The A3 is moving to sedan ONLY. If you want the new A3 in a Sportback, the press release said the Sportback will only be their plug in hybrid motor.

You could prolly still pickup an A3 Sportback Quattro (DSG) at dealerships now.

From what I thought was the case, the US-spec Golf R is manual only. Overseas it gets the DSG.

From March 26th:

In a company decision reversal, we're now officially getting the new A3 Sportback starting later this year, but that's a five-door hatch and not a big volume attraction for markets like the United States.

So I thought we're getting it (though that wasn't originally the plan), even though it sounds like Audi isn't expecting to move a ton of them in numbers anywhere close to what they anticipate for the A3 sedan.

Yeah, but the current A3 is nice but nothing that really grabs my attention. The next A3 is a lot nicer to look at. My girlfriend was stoked on it.

Ah. Thanks for posting up that article. Very happy to read that the quilted seats will be an option and not standard. Also excited about the A3 Sportback. Although I do wish the S3 or RS3 was coming to the states in the Sportback.

Well, we might still get it. I'd bet part of it will depend on how well-received the A3 Sportback is and how its demand is compared to the sedans. So if the US loves that one, then maybe we'll get the others in more than just the sedan body style.
