DGM Stage 2+ pro-tuned

Default 11 WRX High-gear sputtering after grimmspeed ebcs install/pro tune

Did a little searching.. couldn't find anyone talking about the same issue unless I wasn't searching for the right words. I'm wondering if anyone may have a recommendation for this:

Installed a grimmspeed ebcs and had a custom stage 2 tune about a year ago. During the tune as boost levels increased slightly, (what sounded like) my turbosmart dual port bpv started sputtering or fluttering at full throttle in 3rd-5th gear especially, while seemingly maintaining a solid boost level on the boost gauge. I continually tried adjusting the valve until it was as hard as it could go, still happening. Tried a stiffer spring thinking I was out of the spring's range, and tried replacing the stock bpv, both with same symptom.

Could this just be a simple seal issue on the valve that I just haven't nailed down? Seems funny that both the cardboard gasket used for the turbosmart valve and the rubber stock valve gasket could have the same issue.. I also never had the issue before the ebcs running about 20 psi, and now at 22 psi. Maybe the ~2 psi could've pushed the seal over the edge..?

I was also thinking it could just be the nature of how the ebcs is plumbed.. so it's just making the sputtering sound at high boost.

The car's running great and it's just annoying, so figured I'd see what anyone thinks. Thanks

sounds like the valves themselves are leaking....try a different valve

Sounds like the EBCS is doing its job. Are you sure this is not wastegate flutter?

The EBCS will rapidly open and close the wastegate to regulate boost...and since you say there are no issues holding boost, it sounds like the EBCS is operating as it should.

this. mine will flutter very rapidly sometimes under load. like scotty said throw another valve on and try it out.

Also, the reason you only hear it in gears 3-5 is because you have not built full boost in 1-2, so the EBCS has not hit its threshold and essentially doesnt have to do anything.

Thanks for the input. I figured that was the case with the higher-gear boost levels. The wastegate flutter would make sense too since changing the valve spring rate did nothing.

I was considering trying the Cobb XLE valve: anyone have this with a similar setup?

Also is the flutter even avoidable if it's supposed to be doing that, or would the flutter sound go away with a better seal? Seems like a silly way to regulate boost unless there's a technical reason for the oscillation like that?

I have the Cobb BPV and the cobb EBCS. I get the same noise. Went out to Cobb twice to have the techs listen and ride along because I was scared. Its just the EBCS working properly. Another valve might dampen some of the noise but I am just trying to get used to it (I honestly hate the sputtering noise).

Got it. I'm with you, super annoying.

Anyone think this may work? Is there risk involved in making adjustments to the wastegate? I'm gonna ask my tuner I think.. since he thought it was my valve the whole time:

If u guys hate the sputtering, go with a hybrid setup using a mbc in conjunction with your ebcs.

^This.

Or just switch to an MBC alone.

The hybrid setup is interesting.. I read about it and would make me feel safer than adjusting the wastegate, although the ebc is still in control.

Mbc alone is what I had before, but realized as the New England climate changes, I'd really need to keep an eye on boost since there's zero safety ceiling for over boosting.

Since the weather's gotten warmer recently, the sputtering seems to have gone away somewhat. I'll have to do a few more checks, and see what my tuner thinks. I'll post if I have anything to report.

This explanation is spot on. More than likely what you are hearing is the internal wastegate flap opening and closing rapidly as designed to regulate the boost pressure and keep it at the desired level.

I can vouch for the hybrid setup (running it with an EWG). It's the best of both worlds and I love it!

I just want to bump this thread for anyone else with this issue. My car had the exact same issues after installing a GS EBCS w/ TP Stg. 3 tune. After finally coming across this thread it reassured me the issue is normal. I was scared there was something detrimental to the car that would prevent me from being able to get my car tuned.

Now i'm getting my car pro-tuned tomorrow which apparently is essential after installing a Grimmspeed EBCS.

Also the hybrid set-up sounds interesting and is definitely something i'll discuss with my tuner.

Yep no worries! It's not an issue. It's the EBCS doing what it's designed to do. That sound is normal. Wastegate flutter. But like you said, must tune for!

Yes it is essential, but you already did tune for it with the TP stage 3.

Reviving this thread...

I have a Torqued Performance Stage 2 Tune (OpenSource)/AEM CAI/Invidia Catted DP/Perrin Quad Tip CBE/Turbosmart BPV

I would like to get a V3 Accessport/Protune/Process West TMIC/Grimmspeed EBCS

Can I install the TMIC and EBCS on my current tune and then drive roughly 200 ish miles to get the Protune?
