Exclamation People casing WRX's in Houston?

So my car has been sitting in my driveway for about 2 months, not running. My wife got home from the gym earlier and our neighbor across the street came over and asked if we were selling it. We have not advertised it for sale nor have I even mentioned it for sale to anyone. According to our neighbor, this morning two "Asian" guys in a Silver lowered WRX with "big wheels" pulled up in our driveway...and just sat there for a while. They drove down to the end of the street, turned around then parked in front of our house for a while. Then they drove off.

This is weird on many levels. The description doesn't sound like anyone that I know. No one called me to see if I was home today (why would I be, it's a Monday?) Is this weird enough that I should call the cops? Does anyone know who it might be?

I would call them.
I've had luck with a deer camera before, set it up to take pictures during the day and check it in the evenings. Usually you can get a plate # if you can get it in the right spot.

Do you live in a neighborhood where this kinda stuff happens frequently? If not, than tell your neighbor to keep a watch out and see if they come back.

No. My hood is practically crime free. Also, I live on a dead end street, so its not like they were just driving by and saw it. It won't be necessary to tell the neighbor anything, he's the nosiest person I know.

Can you put the car in the garage or something? If not, someone mentioned placing a camera to watch. That would be a good idea.

Do you have a place you can put the car for the next week or so? A family members house? If you're not driving it, I'd hide it away for awhile.

There is no room in the garage, and it doesn't run. That makes it kind of difficult to move it anywhere. I might see about setting up a camera.

Put a baby moniter in the garage at night. That way you can hear if anything is going on overnight. As for the days, a camera and vigilant neighbor will hopefully be adequate.

BABY MONITOR, GOOD IDEA!

My dog usually gets me up when he hears something at night. Usually it is just a neighbor going to work extra early. But he does a good job.

I have logitech alert security cam system with night vision. Sends me alerts and pictures to my phone if it detects any motion and I can view my cameras live on the app.

From another perspective, it could have been some wrx fanboys digging on your car. I've had people randomly come up and ring my doorbell asking about my old jeep.

I'd inform yoir neighbors and throw a car cover on it.

Update.

It seems two of my neighbors witnessed the incident. They were talking to each other just across the street. So I talked to the other neighbor and got a much different story. The first neighbor told me it was two Asians in an older silver Subaru hatchback. The second neighbor tells me it was two Mexicans in a newer silver hatchback that might have been a Suzuki? He also claimed to see them again later in another neighborhood driving up and down streets. He said he thought they were looking for junk or looking at houses for sale. He is an idiot though, because my house isn't for sale and it wasn't trash day. I think they were probably casing houses. Hopefully the mean mugging they got from the senile watch will deter them enough.

I use these with a prepaid sim card. They work well.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/GPS-GSM-GPRS...item4162e868e9
When someone jacks your ride, you call the phone number registered to the sim card and you get a return call with the tracker's coordinates. I've tested them a few times and works well.

I would go to your local police station and report it as suspious activity in the area. If somethng does happen later on to the car or a home break-in during the day there is already a report on file for them to reference. Most police departments will also start random patrols in the area or step up patrols. In addition you never know if they alreadyhave reports of similar activity or are looking for a similar vehicle in another part of town for similar activity.
If something does happen the first thing the police will ask is why you didnt report it. It will also help with any insurance claim that might be needed in the event of something happening that it was reported to police.
Just my two cents

+1 My dad bought the house across the street from mine and worked on fixing it for several months. Some people came by wanting to rent it and from what he told me they weren't "desirables" that you would want to rent to. Dirty looking, the lady's 2 sons had their pants hanging off their asses and they kept looking all over the place. About a week after they came by and several times calling him on the way into work one morning my wife noticed the side privacy fence door opened and she pointed it out to me. I told her my dad ALWAYS locked it up and there was a padlock on it, the wood had been broken by the padlock, the back sliding door was opened along with the shed in the backyard. Luckily only the lawn mower was stolen and no damage to the house.

I reported it to the police and they mentioned that there had been no reports in my neighborhood in a while. My guess was it was them shady looking fools that wanted to rent it.

With a not running car sitting in a drive way is a invitation for trouble. Since you mentioned garage is full move to back yard or somewhere else. If the thugs do not mess with it, the City can cite you for it. Out of site, out of mind for others.

Anything special about your wrx or is it just a broken stock wrx? It doesn't run so I wouldnt be terribly worried about someone trying to steal it. They can tow it I guess but I don't see that happening easily especially with neighbors.

If you have full coverage, who cares if someone steals it? Theft sucks, but that's what insurance is for right? Plus if it is stolen, you can buy another car that actually runs.

Most people who have non- running cars in their driveway do not have insurance much less full coverage insurance. If they had enough money for full coverage insurance, they would most likely have a running car.

I'm not lucky enough for that to happen.

Fix it and drive it, or sell it and dont worry about it. I myself have seen cars sitting for months not moving and Ill ask the owners if they want to sell it. If they were going to steal it it would be gone already.

just my 2 cents ..
