I'm about to build an engine for my 03. I'm planning on getting most everything Port and Polished for as much bottom end as I can get and faster spool times.

My goal is 320awhp because I think that's about all my tranny will hold.

Plans:
PnP manifolds
ACL bearings
Pro tune from phatbotti
Meth injection
650cc DW injectors
DW 300 fuel pump
3" catless dp and exhaust
Catless up pipe.
And I'm going to have my engine guy balance and blueprint the engine
Brian cower +1mm valves
Valve springs
Sti cams

So which turbo will be the best for power in the lower end and quick spools

Thanks.

I am not sure about those exact turbos, but I put down 312awhp with a vf22 and my 2002 wrxs stock 2.0l long block.

I believe the vf22 is close to the size of a normal 16g.

Also my wife's 2005 LGT put down 299.9awph with a bnr16g, but is a 2.5l and an automatic.

What's your mod list? So your saying basically 312awhp with bolt on stuff and a tune? If that's the case I'm looking more towards 400awhp with my mod list? I know the stoc tranny won't hold that though

I have a PnP vf39 and at 20 psi, I hit 281 hp on a dynapack. Get the 16g and PnP that.

I have the following mods:
FMS TMIC
750cc Injectors
Wally 255lph Fuel Pump.
Full Exhaust: PnP stock headers with hi-flow cross-pipe, GS up-pipe, eBay down-pipe, HKS Hi-Power cat-back
K&N Typhoon SRI.
GS ECBS

I hit full boost at 3700 rpms.

Thanks. So I'm not extemely worried about hp as much as torque, but I know the 2 go hand in hand.

Ok so I want as much low end torque as I can get because I pull my boat with the car and the stock engine struggles to get it out of the ramp.

Well, if that is your reason for doing it, there's really not a whole lot that is going to give your car more power at 2-3k rpms, espescially if you're just slipping the clutch anyway. The best way to give yourself more torque would be to do a 2.5 bottom end if you have the car apart. But even with that, you're still talking something that the car wasn't physically designed for. Will it do it? Sure. It's just not going to be a torque monster in the same way a bigger v-6 or v-8 would be.

Get something to help get your egts down as well. An equal length header will certainly help in this area, as well as giving you better top end, and will make the car les... "peaky" It will just smoothe out the power everywhere. Plus it would make whatever turbo you decide to go with just work better.

I am of the opinion that a pnp stock header is a waste of money. Too much time and money spent on something that will give you marginally better flow, and will still not help to equalize egt's across the engine.

I would say that a 16g would probably suit your needs for power just fine, but it's going to feel laggy in the low end. Doing headwork will help you here for sure on our not-so-good heads, but a physically larger turbo will just need more oomph to get it going. You may be happier with the "feel" of a vf turbo, even if it does give up a little maximum power.

You don't have a EWG listed in your mods. Will help the turbo ramp up significantly quicker.

Why don't you talk to phatron @ phatbotti if you are going to use him as a tuner.

vf48 is pretty much a vf39, I have a vf39 and enjoy it but I think a big 16g would offer a little bit more.

I don't know about 16g turbo's really but just an example of what you can get with a pnp vf48. My 2005 wrx wagon with 2.0 and stock internals gets 292hp/280tq at 18psi after protune. My car was tuned on a mustang dyno with no correction factor. It was on 92 pump gas. My dyno sheet and more info are posted here:

http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=79

My mod list:

PnP IHI vf48 new
GT spec gen 2 unequal length header/uppipe combo
Hyperflow tmic
Bosch ev14 850cc injectors
Walbro 255
Cobb TBE
K&N typhoon intake
Zerolift polymer tgv deletes
APS hard turbo inlet
Denso 1 step colder spark plugs

My turbo spools super quick... so quick it's hard to stay out of spool. With your mod list your motor should be able to push more hp. Probably want to look into a sti tranny swap or square cut gears for at least 1st and 2nd if you do. Have fun with your build!

If you can find an EVOIII-16g I would go with that turbo hands down. IMO best all around turbo for the 2.0L. I've owned a vf39 (pretty much a vf48) and now on a Blouch EVOIII-16g and it is a killer upgrade. PnP would be even better!
