drove 5 miles and I get an oil light on. Level is fine. Castrol Gtx 5w30 and a Mobil filter. Shut it off as soon as i saw the light. I'm stranded..

You don't happen to have an oil pressure gauge installed do you?

Still dont know what to do here...

This was right after first startup. turned engine over in 5 intervals of 15 seconds with black and brown multi pin connectors unplugged. then connected, and fired, held idle at 1500 for 5 minutes, within the last minute, cel came on, just have a weird idle. drove 5 miles then oil light came on, shut er down and towed it home.

k&n cai
perrin inlet hose
pnp vf39
Injector dynamics 725cc
killer b pickup, sti pan

The best thing to do before buying a new sensor or tearing the engine again would be doing a simple oil pressure test. Just take the sensor out and put an oil pressure gauge.

After my rebuild my oil light would stay on until my car was warm, I check the pressure and it was fine, just replaced the sensor and problem fixed.
I hope that helped

Make an autozone run and buy a cheapo mechanical sunpro oil pressure gauge to verify pressure before you do anything else. Pretty sure they are about $17.

thats what i did after spinning a rod bearing, and never saw a oil lite.i pulled a oil galley plug at the rear of the block on top and hooked the gauge up to it ,so i have a lite and gauge, the gauge is further down stream so it give me a better idea of what going on after the oil has been delivered to a couple of main and rod bearings.i bought the threaded oil galley from "flatirons tuning.com"

it does'nt say if it is a 10 mm or 11mm pump.
i have a 11mm pump on a fresh rebuild ....when warm it had 70 -74 on 10-30 wt oil.80 to 84 psi on 20-50 wt oil the 10mm pumps relief valve is set for @ 85psi so i would think you'd be 75 to 85 psi if your bearings are not worn too much.

what were the clearances of the main and rod bearings when you put it together?

is that oil pressure at idle? If it is that's very, very high for a warm motor. I run the PnL modified 11mm pump and with 10w-30 My oil pressure at idle is around 30 psi and pegs high at around 4100 rpm. I think my relief is shimmed to around 90 psi.

It may not be directly related to your problem, but the first thing I would do is drain the GTX 5W-30. Use Rotella 15W-40, or an oil specifically made for breaking in a built motor (Amsoil, Royal Purple, Motul, Brad Penn, etc.).

I have some brad penn 10w30. Would that be better then castrol?

Only reason I have castrol in it is because it was recommended that by Keith at pure tuning.

Have an oil gauge, I'll be hooking it up tonight and seeing where my pressure is actually at.

There is nothing wrong with your oil choice. Your oil choice isn't causing your oil light to come on but saying that an oil with a high ZDDP content is good for break-in. Brad Penn break-in oil is good but you can also just add a ZDDP additive to any oil to accomplish the same thing.

I understand. Thank you! Might as well just buy some additive for the castrol. No sense in dumping it. Just wish I was told this sooner.

I've rebuilt small block gm motors and always use brad penn. thought it was odd that this builder recommended Gtx, so I just assumed it was a Subaru thing, and the motor didn't really need it. But I guess i shouldve double checked.

About to go pick up some additive and fire this thing up!!

I put a cheap sunpro mechanical in and mounted under steering column until I get a matching gauge. My motor is brand new oem shortblock and runs about 25 psi at idle and about 75psi cruising under 3000k. Did you forget to put the o-ring in when the oil pump was put in or the pickup?

If it were me, at this point I would probably drain the oil or take off the oil filter, cut it open and look for debris? Anything but keep running it.

tore down a 06 ej257 that the oil pick up tune had came loose from the case.
found one of the bolts barely holding the pick up tube and the other in the rear
of the case in a oil return passage. o-ring was still on pick up tube.

this cost him about 5k, 3k for built shortblock, 1.5k labor, & 500 for gaskets and stuff.

i suggest pulling oil pan and oil pump. both can be done with the motor in the
car. but a lift will make things much easier than laying on your back.
