so I've tried to search around but haven't really had any luck with finding the info i needed. i have an 06 wrx and was wondering what i need or might need to change to run a full sti longblock. are the sensor all the same and would i have to do any wiring or run a different ecu. if there is a thread out there for this i apologize in advance and would appreciate if someone could post it. thanks

We'll it happened. I spun a rod bearing and warranty won't cover it. So I have a plan to swap a 2011 sti(ej257) engine in my 2011 Wrx(ej255) one thing is will I need a Sti Ecu or can my wrx ecu work? Also what about the harness on the Sti engine, will it plug right in or will I need to do some modifications? That's all I need to know. Thank you.

I would assume since the STI has avcs on both intake and exhaust cams while the WRX only has it on one cam, that the wiring is different. The ecu probably will not plug right in either.

You could get service manuals for both cars on eBay and compare the schematics.

I was afraid of that. Will I have to get a full body harness? Ill check on that eBay thing right now.

If you find out that the wiring is different, yes.

I just purchased a 2008 impreza and would like to swap either a ej255 or ej257 into it. Don't know where to start other than buying the block...

Ok...I must be missing something. I can't seem to find any info on Phase II swaps. I'm working on dropping a 2.2L Impreza A/T in place of a 2.5L Legacy L M/T. Not finding much.

On ly side, i just bought an engine from 08+Sti Ej25, i'm using Motec M800 with cable throttlebody, car is starting well with 0.6boost, but flutters after 6krpm, one of the AVCS is missing ... I'm trying to find if it is AVCS related, or tuning problem, if i stay under 0.8bar boost, car is doing fine, above that it's anyone's guess... Any help guys?

It sounds like your throttle cable is too tight you might want to check that.

My04 Wrx has been running a Wrx ECU and engine harness an an 05 sti longblock with top feeds and Wrx mani and cable tb. I want to set it up more correctly since its apart right now for some front end work. What engine harness, ECU, and etc. do I need to run this either with an sti ECU, for avcs, or stand alone. I'm real curious as with my Wrx tgvs intake mani and top feeds with 800cc inj what I can do to clean the setup a bit and make it more 'correct'. Thanks.

Also, should I source a jdm sti engine harness and ECU? And if so which ver should I try to source? And my 16bit USDM ej20 is running this all.

Hi Everyone,
I'm seriously having trouble finding out what I would need to drop an 08+ STi Engine with fully functioning AVCS into my 06 Legacy GT? Just blew the motor and want to go with the newer version. Also, is that compatible with the auto trans? (It's my sister's car lol)
Thanks

From what I remember when I was researching putting an 08+ sti drivetrain into an 02 Forester the 08+ STi's use a new CAN bus ecu that requires readings from a number of different sensors throughout the car (speed sensor in wheels, DCCD g sensor, and immobilizer, etc) to function properly, so while it might be possible to jury rig those sensors into another car it's no small undertaking. As for just using the engine maybe you could, but without the ECU it's not going to run dual AVCS, which is the big difference from the 04-07 STi.

Another consideration that I lost sight of for a while was OBDII emissions testing, which we in Oregon have to worry about. If the car has any ECU other than it's original with the original VIN burned into it you automatically fail emissions. If the ECU is for a car other than the car it was intended for (a corvette ECU in a 96+ miata) then you fail automatically.

Easiest thing for you to do hands down would be just buy an ej257 shortblock from flatironstuning.com for $1800 (you can use an 09+ STi short block if you want) IF the heads on the Legacy GT are still good. If not then tear down the motor and see if it's repairable through a builder.

Honestly unless you were doing a decent turbo upgrade at the same time simply swapping an STi's ej257 wouldn't make any difference from the ej255 you already had in the GT and blew up from what I've seen across the interwebs. The power output differences in modern EJ257s and older EJ255s are subtle and come down to dual AVCS and the VF48.

Do a shortblock if you can and upgrade the turbo and tune it (16g, VF52, 380xt) then just drive and enjoy. That's my two cents as a studied novice.

This is a little off the subject but can you tell me if a 255 long block from an 07 model xt will work in an 04 model?

I just bought a 2005 9-2x (WRX) and it spun a bearing on the drive home
Can anyone give me some insight on my best course of action? Right now I'm thinking about an ej255 or ej257 short block hybrid. Will I be able to run everything from an 05 WRX on that block without any issues (I will be lowering compression of course)? I would have it tuned conservatively with the td04 and a Walbro 255 fuel pump. Would I still need bigger injectors and would my wiring harness match up? I am extremely new to Subarus (I only had it for a day) but I have experience working on plenty of other brands, but if this proves too complicated I might just put in a new ej205 short block and be done with it. Thank you guys for all the info!

My memory when I was researching swapping an EJ255/57 into my old Forester was that you needed:

-AVCS ECU
-Matching immobilizer and key
-Ignition with antennae for chipped key
-Roll connector that fits your car (the 04 STi had a single stage airbag and the 05+ had a dual or something, I can't remember the exact reason but for older Subaru's they tended to be single, so the 04 STi was the only choice or an 06-07 WRX IIRC)
-AVCS wiring harness and harness merge from I-wire or someplace like that
-Drive by wire throttle body
-Drive by wire gas pedal
-AVCS oil lines, they aren't all the same as the non AVCS heads

My personal opinion after looking over the possibility of using AVCS on that project for over a year or two was that the added wiring and cost to include AVCS was no where near worth the very minimal gains that AVCS seemed to show vs a long block EJ25 swap or a hybrid EJ20/25. I compared dozens of dynographs on EFI Logic and Cobb's dyno databases and really could not see an appreciable difference anywhere, and considering the extra parts and wiring adds about 1500 in cost it's money better spent elsewhere IMO.
