Default Why dont these guys race the Pikes Peak hill cliimb?

I've been wondering why people like David Higgans, Travis pastrana, and Ken Block don't race up Pikes Peak. Travis broke the world record up mount Washington, why not pikes peak? Does it have to do with contracts or maybe the time that hill climb takes place isn't a good one for them?

They would get destroyed. The only Subaru that I know of which would be considered competitive is an ex WR97 car built by a NZ outfit. 700WHP on an EJ20. It's also the driver. Totally different breed. A lot of the guys that do it are from the days where 500+WHP was the norm and Grp B was popular.

Or send PMs? Don't know how active they are now, but both Travis and Ken have been nasioc members for a while.

It used to be a part of the SCCA calender of events before pro rally was bought out by Rally America. Mark Lovell won his class at Pikes Peak while racing for Subaru, just a few weeks before he was killed in a crash at the Oregon Trail rally.

I doubt Travis has time to commit to Pikes Peak, now that he's involved with DANICACAR series of dullness.

As for Higgins or Block, well, it would probably depend on sponsorship and building a dedicated car to do a one off race.

Because winning it doesn't sell flatbill hats, shoes and energy drinks to brotatoes?

Because they dont have the balls to drive on that hill. Imoa I think they are "show" drivers and not real drivers with the experience that you need to win and survive the climb.

And im sure their contract/insurance will not allow them to do that.

Gotta disagree with this, at least as far as Higgins goes. Have you seen the video of him damn near ending himself at Isle of Man? He's got titanium between his legs to take what was nearly a stock STI 150+ mph through narrow brick-wall lined streets. Even if he was only doing 80-100 mph at the time he almost crashed, that's still nuts.

^^^ I'm with you on that. There's no way contract/insurance would allow them to do it. They're used to "safer" races.

Ahh! David! My bad. Interesting they were both born on the Isle of Man. Not to digress from my oversight.

EDIT: I'm just digging myself in deep here. Didn't even realize they're brothers. I need to get out and experience life more.

As far as the insurance covering them, I can definitely understand that one. Especially for block seeing that he crashes in rally all of the time.

Travis "broke" the Mt Washington record (barely) in a car with 20 years newer technology on a course that is more paved than it was 20 years ago, hardly comparable.

What does this even mean? The sanctioning body provides the insurance for the event.

EDIT:

He's also no longer involved in stage rally. He does rally cross events, but that's not the same thing as a hill climb event or stage rally by any means, where he did win three Rally America championships.

Not to mention that Pikes Peak is now a joke compared to the original monster climb. The days of tarmac/dirt are gone.

Like him or hate him, Pastrana has never lacked the cojones to try just about anything. When you look at all the crazy **** that kid has done, there's not a chance in hell he would say "Pike's Peak is too scary!"

Also did it during a non-sanctioned private session taking multiple runs and practice not in competition.

Not really that impressive.
