^I have to agree with this. Once we have all but concluded for whatever reason that you or anyone for that matter aren't getting the desired gas mileage(whether it is your driving habbits, the car, false advertising, dark magic unicorns, Obama, Bush...) just trade for a car that will. Or just eat the unsatisfactory MPG and leave it be. Or file a complaint and see what comes of it. The constant narking about not being happy with the car isn't going to help at his point.

27mpg. 95% city commute. Some AC with the warmer weather.
317.2 miles. 28.8 mpg on the dash. 24 mph avg. 13277 on odo. No hypermiling, just going with the flow.
Hitting the city numbers pretty solidly these days with my city commute.

I own an 2013 Impreza (my forth Subaru owned) and out of the 6700miles it has on the car its averaging 31.8MPG and 90% of those miles were on winter gas and 1 oil change. That's not too bad compared to my other 2 Imprezas and 1 Legacy Ive owned.

I fueled up before I started my journey today and I drove from Myrtle Beach, SC to Savannah, GA and used 1/4 tank...I'll let you google or mapquest the miles to see how good it was since I forgot to record the mileage when I arrived and I've driven since then.

I'm calling BS! Besides the fuel gauge (level) isn't accurate from the first 1/4 tank vs the last 1/4 tank because it's based on float level not actual volume. Ride the rest of that tank & give some actual figures.

I'm not claiming to have gotten any number of MPG's....simply an observation at how many miles I was able to drive on an "indicated" 1/4 tank.

Lol nice numbers. But saying you used 1/4 tank isnt accurate enough for a calculation. Im sure its still above epa estimates, (combined at least) so good job.

One more reason the sedans are superior.

Currently getting 27mpg average WITH fixed roof rails and a mountain bike on the roof. ~2000 miles on the odo. I'm gonna get rid of the roof rack for the bike and get a hitch mount soon, till then I'll be using my old saris trunk rack, so I think that will improve fuel economy a bit further too. I've gotten 29 mpg mixed city/highway on a manual, so under optimal conditions, if driven properly with no crap on the roof, this car is actually relatively efficient. The problem I have is if you drive it aggressively a lot, that fuel economy plummets (I guess that's the same with any car). A bit of hard acceleration here and there doesn't hurt it much though, maybe by 1 to 1.5mpg overall on a tank.

2013 Impreza 5 door 2.0l with 3,000 miles. I'm averaging 31 MPG combined. I run auto a/c and radio on all the time. I stay at 2,000 RPM when I can, anticipate stops, and maximize gliding. I previously owned a hybrid so I an used to maximizing MPG while driving comfortably.

I don't think the radio will affect your mpgs so I think you're safe there. Lol

ok, I got 24.5mpg average for 3 years in my wrx with mixed driving (owned it 9, tracked it 3).
our 2011 forster is at 25.5 average also mixed driving and with the wife driving more (lead foot).
The MINI is getting ~32 on my 110 mile commute these days (mostly highway @ ~75mph).

I want a 5mt hatch. What do you guys think I'll get for MPG? It "needs" to be the 33 epa estimate or I don't think I'll switch. The MINI is 10 years old and I'm sick of it at this point. I'd gain space and AWD and go to normal gas from premium, but I want to keep it at 33mpg @ ~75mph. Likely? And it's an easy commute w/o much stop and go and I'm good with spacing etc. I can also cruise a bit. And in the forester when I drive it I've gotten 28~30 just to show how I drive -vs- the wife -vs- the EPA's numbers...

imho you can get 33 but at 75 that might be pushing it, in winter that will obviously drop.

speed time mpg cost/day cost/year
55 MPH 120 min. 34.0 $11.32 $4,131.80
60 MPH 110 min. 33.0 $11.67 $4,259.55
65 MPH 102 min. 31.3 $12.30 $4,489.50
70 MPH 94 min. 28.2 $13.65 $4,982.25
75 MPH 88 min. 26.2 $14.69 $5,361.85
80 MPH 83 min. 24.5 $15.71 $5,734.15

Sounds like my 10 year old Corolla I was planning to replace. I think at 75 at sea level it would be like 80 up here at 6,000 feet or so elevation. My Corolla is rated the same (renormed 2008) as the CVT Impreza we just bought, but gets easily 7 or 8 mpg more running the same freeway commute, driving the same way. At that speed I think you would indeed get better mpg with the 5MT than the CVT. The engine just doesn't seem to have enough oomph to keep the CVT in high at speed with even a little grade, and the 5MT is geared a little lower.

As aeoporta shows, you will be making $6.32 per hour by slowing down from 75 to 55 - is your time during your commute (vs. family time or productive work time) worth more than that, or do you enjoy driving along at 55 mph with everyone else passing you like some others here do?

I would use the Consumer Reports' highway mpg figures for comparison, they seem to be more relatively consistent when it comes to the Impreza - although the 5MT gets better mpg than the CVT on fuelly.com - still not quite up to the competition, but maybe close enough considering the quality...

I see about 31mpg average at 75, but the little tiny bit of in town plus warm up drops me down to about 28 on a 70/30 hwy/city split.

Expecting 33 every fill is unrealistic imho.

My fuelly is under the same user name

I'm getting 33 in a 10 year old mini now though. Yeah the impreza is obviously AWD but I'd get high 20s in the WRX on this drive if I had it. It's <1/2 a mile to the highway from the house and about the same off the highway to work. So yeah, 55 miles each way, <2 are non highway? Not sure what my average speed is, the MAX is 75 though, I'd probably guess I average between 65 and 70 while on the highway? I don't have cruise and the MINI shakes at 76~77 and up, so yeah, somewhere right around 75 most of the time!

regardless though, I'd bet I'm the poster child for getting or beating the EPA standard (I do in the forester). So 33 should be close to possible. If I have cruise I'd be more likely to set it at 70 and soak up the better MPG there. I'm hoping they add the 6mt to the 2014 impreza like they did for the forester. It made a big difference there, maybe they'll add it here to help their cafe standards and boost their stats further?

If your speed is 70 or less on that commute, I would expect 33+ even if I was driving (gentle on the highway, hard on on-ramps, pretty hard in town)

Have you guys seen that Ford Escape commercial where the woman says "33 miles per gallon, that's crazy!"....LOL...more like 25 combined on actual roads. They are on a track with controlled speeds and no wind. That commercial drives me crazy. No car is going to get the "up to MPG" unless you drive 20 MPH all day.

I will tell you straight out that you will not get 33mpg at 75mph, you may get 33mpg at ~65mph, so don't buy it and then start complaining that your high speed driving is not giving you the EPA estimated HWY mpg's, we already have someone here to fill that roll.

BTW my previous car, a 2008 Hyundai Elantra 5 speed, exceeded the EPA numbers by about 2mpg. My 2012 5 speed Impreza, driven on the same route and in a similar way, meets but does not exceed the EPA numbers. YMMV.
