overprotective parents are the last of his worries... they're figuring which brand new car to get.

no disrespect to OP in any way, he's just fortunate than most kids.

Buuuuut, what you should do is buy a gc8 and secretly sti swap in your friends garage with the money you're saving

ill share a story, since im at work it will be a quick summary.
When I turned 16, I had already been interested in a WRX since '02 when they were released in the US and i wanted to buy one.
My parents hated the internet and private sales, so craigslist was not to my advantage when finally choosing my first car.
I went to the dealership, they had an 05 WRX for 18,500 and wouldn't go down the 15,000 cap i had (which is pretty dang good, thanks mom and dad for the loan.)
So my parents dragged me to a used car lot and i hesitantly bought a 2007 impreza for 13,500... pretty much was forced to do it.
Look, i loved my impreza more than ever, she was so beautiful, it's just I wanted to BOOST. I wanted my big wet subaru dreams every night to become a reality.
so in december of last year, i bought an 02 bugeye with 80,000 miles for 8900 bucks. F^%&*ing awesome condition mechanically. needs a little TLC on the outside, nothing major. currently working on a stage 3 daily-driven build.

Theres really no complex ending to this story, as the obvious theme is apparent here. The WRX was cheaper, its always what i wanted, and the only reason i made a WRONG DESICION in the first place was because of parental influence. Its not the speed, its only 200 whp. Its the nut behind the wheel. Show some authority and get that car. Dont make the same mistake I came to regret every day until I upgraded. my .02 cents for ya bud happy trails

Im 18, i will say if I had gotten my wrx at 16 i would have killed myself, or wrecked it. two years is a lot in the experience of driving. get something(manual) fun that doesnt cost so much. learn a little and then get something awesome.

edit: i also pay 3200 bucks a year for insurance with one ticket(not moving violation)

I bought my (nearly) 300whp WRX when I was 19 and am almost 22 now. 19 is still "too young" IMO to own a car with any decent amount of power. There is the argument that some people are more mature, but I was considered very mature and have still done some really stupid things in cars. None of them in my WRX actually, but that's only because I knew how easy it would be to get in trouble with it. And for insurance, I'm paying over $200 a month and have a squeaky clean record with homeowners discount, multiple car, having my wife on the same plan blah blah blah.

So I also would have to agree that you should look into something more affordable that's still fun. I personally had a 69 Beetle all throughout high school that I delivered pizzas in and she was my pride and joy. Ugly as can be but I loved it. And just like everybody else has said, it was slow but FUN. I had big sway bars front and rear, lowered it a little bit, disc brakes up front and threw an exhaust and dual carbs on it. It was slow but very fun to drive. Some people can't appreciate the difference but it will help your driving ability a lot and you hopefully will learn to respect the dangers of higher performing cars.

I'm 20, and own a 07 STI. I know for a fact that if I would've got this car when I was in highschool I would've killed myself with it more than likely. Not because of the power(had a 500 hp 302 in a Maverick I used to drive), but because of the stupid things I did to impress other people.

Granted I'm still young, and I still like to have fun, but I'm paying for everything on this car no help from my parent, or any other sources. So I know that me driving this at 20 coming out of a Honda Prelude I impress myself, and constantly get looks from other people so I'm happy babying it with the occasional fun pull.

If you can afford it, and prove to your parents you're mature enough to have it I say get what you want, but remember just because you have power doesn't mean you need to use it all the time.
