Default 2013 WRX STI Purchase Question

Hey guys,
I thought I'd post this in the Vancouver section..there isn't a need for the whole site to chime in..and maybe posting it here will give more relevant answers.

I have a 2010 WRX base model and am looking to upgrade to a 2013 STI sport tech (I do go to the track and the new electronic features and car body are some incentives). I am heading to a local dealership today to check it out and then discuss prices. Before I do though, I'm wondering if my hesitations are valid.

I've heard the stereo quality is quite poor. Does this relate to the electronics in a whole? Since it is late in the 2013 STI model year, could the next batch that come out at probably the end of summer be better (I know that no one knows what's up-coming...but is the current set up worth avoiding?).

I like the current look a lot, so I'm not needing to wait for the 2015 model..or whenever it comes out. Would any of you have hesitations? The price is fine..I've done the Unhaggle pricing that was accepted by a local dealer and it is quite good.

If any of you have comments and aren't outside enjoying your Saturday I would appreciate them.

Thanks!
Joel

Stereos can always be upgraded. That should really be one of the lowest items on your criteria list.

Just took the car for a spin and heard the stereo. I'm actually pleasantly surprised. It's better then my base model WRX. The car drives quite good. If the prices comes out right I might drive home in a different car.

Haha well its gotta be better then what they were putting in the original turbo legacy. I snapped this pic the other day when replacing the originals from 19 yrs ago. Guess we know where subaru was pinching the pennies.

wow, that looks cheaper than my one-off paper funnels.

but the cheapest still had to be the earlier model civics and all. They're even thinner paper...

I have the base 2012. The stereo is utter crap. With that in mind, $4000 sticker price for better speakers and navi, with the sunroof, blinking mirrors and fogs is something you would have to decide whether is valuable or not. Precisely, you can get a very good audio system for much less than that, and if a sunroof is not a main priority (you mentioned track - sunroofs weigh your car down o.O) you could save yourself a lot of money and go with a base and go from there. Besides, base has gunmetal grey wheels which I feel are much nicer than the silver wheels.

You could always bargain too, at one point they offered the sport tech for just under $2000 extra from the base. But I really didn't want a sunroof.

With that said, the sport tech is nice too, but if you prefer more customizability, go with the base. Everything on the sport tech can just be put on after, and depending if you know where to go, the parts are not expensive. I had the fogs installed at the dealership, and they threw that in too.

I have a 2012 sport tech and I was happy with the stock stereo. It comes with a nice AVIC Pioneer screen and upgraded speakers (as in upgraded from what comes in the base model STi's)
They have OK bass.. but not really enough for me so I added an amp under the passenger seat and a 10" subwoofer in an audio integrations perfect fit sub box just like this :

It was nice not having to change the head unit or door speakers, all I had to do was add the sub and now its perfect for me.. and it doesn't take up any room in the trunk or anything its great I love it.

Aren't the sport tech wheels lighter than the base wheels? Don't forget the sport tech package also comes with better headlights, sirius satalite radio pre installed, and automatic climate control.

I got the sport tech package, I don't think the wheels are lighter for the sports tech package. But again I didn't keep the original rims on for more then 500km, before changing them to better rims
I personally like the sport tech package, and if your spending so much money anyways for the car. I few thousand isn't really going to make that big of a difference right? But thats just my opinion
Just make sure that its the right thing you want to do, and you don't want to have to regret thinking that you should have upgraded. After all your paying for it and you'll have to live with it.

yess there are some bits and pieces i've forgotten to mention but i doubt the wheels would be lighter o.O . again, unless you care for the luxuries, most other things can be added later for perhaps even cheaper!

The fact that the base STi didn't have real HID pissed me right off when a $15,000 KIA does.

But the moon roof, and other stuff is nice. I'm actually always rather surprised by my LED side mirrors. Not that it would be expensive or anything to add after, but still. I like 'em

I think the sales guy at the dealer told me the sport tech wheels were lighter.. I can't find anything that says that though online. So he was probably wrong.

I got the box from audio integrations :

http://www.audiointegrations.net/subarusedan.html

here is a vid showing install procedure :

You don't have to drill any holes or anything its pretty sweet. However if you want to change your driver side tail light bulb you need to remove the subwoofer from the box then remove the box to get at the tail light.. would be a PITA.

Whoa! thanks for all the info. That's definitely something I have to save up for when I do some upgrades on my car audio.

"factory trunk liner has to be cut" <-- this part scares me. :/
