Default 8 people busted speeding down the S2S

http://bc.ctvnews.ca/8-sea-to-sky-sp...pper-1.1273144

Quote:
Eight young drivers were ticketed and their high performance cars impounded after an RCMP helicopter clocked the vehicles speeding over 140 kilometres an hour down a winding stretch of the Sea-to-Sky Highway.
West Vancouver Police launched the Air One helicopter around noon last Friday after receiving a report of vehicles speeding southbound on Highway 99 near Furry Creek.

The chopper quickly tracked the vehicles, apparently travelling more than 60 kilometres an hour over the speed limit.

Footage released by the RCMP shows the vehicles driving closely together winding down the scenic highway as they are observed from the sky by officers.

“We are currently flying at 142 kilometres an hour and the whole pack of cars, they’re all pulling away from us,” the Air One operator is heard telling RCMP dispatch in the footage.

The vehicles were stopped at a roadblock set up on Highway 1 east of Eagleridge Drive shortly after.

The drivers, ranging in age from 21 to 25, received tickets for excessive speeding, and the vehicles were towed for immediate seven day speed impounds.

Const. Jeff Palmer told CTV News each of the vehicles had been given high-performance modifications.

Five of the cars are Nissan 240SX models ranging from 1989 to 1997 model years. Police also impounded a 1989 Nissan Skyline, a 1992 Toyota MKII and a 2000 Acura Integra

Police say there is no evidence to support charges of street racing or dangerous driving

At least one of the impounded cars had a new driver sticker, and another donned an 'I heart drifting' sticker.
The S2S has been a heatscore for many years now, basically since they started the renovations on it for the Olympics. Might want to get your speed thrills elsewhere.

I know that MKII owner... the guy's a super nice guy... ****ty he had to do something dumb.

lol @ the I <3 drifting. How is that even relevant? Stupid media... lol at "high-performance", considering the STi that was impounded at Cassiar tunnel was also called a "luxury vehicle" (yes, I know that group as well).

this part's funny... considering they [the cops] try to slam any two or more cars speeding as "street racing".

Sounds a lot like the guys that showed up to the Byrne meet that one night. Drifting into their parking spots causing a ruckus.

If it's the ones that always go to Byrne, it's not them.

It's so easy to get carried away on the S2S on a nice day especially in a cushy car. I drove my brother in laws S600 to and from Whistler last fall on a gorgeous weekend and was pushing 160 without even noticing.

Miss that damn car!

Their cars were impounded for 7 days, they have to pay towing & storage fees. They stated they are not able to go for street racing as they were not trying to beat each other they were just in a pack.

Yep, "excessive speeding" was recently defined as 40km/h over the posted speed limit and a first offence is worth a big ticket (forget the dollar value) and 7 days in impound with the associated impound fees.

not too mention DRP vs DPP.

it's a "criminal charge" and first time offenders have to pay $320/year for 3 years...

it goes up from there, such as level 2 being $370. the worst part is that they slippin this in ALONGSIDE DPP. it even says "whichever results in a higher charge".

so basically eff icbc...

Despite all this press for young guys/car enthusiast/tuner speeders. IMHO it's those clueless van drivers always doing impound speeds. You know the usual soccer moms etc. Going down highway 91 and 99 I always wonder how they can remain so clueless. If they had to stop I'm sure those drum brakes will work just fine....
