Default Possibly moving to DC

Hey all,

Might be relocating for work to the DC area and need some advice.

I'll be working in the JBAB/Overlook St area. I've never spent any time in DC, and none of my friends have either, can anybody point me in the right direction for where to live? I'm not completely opposed to commuting, but don't want a long drive. I have a fairly new STI that I would want a garage for, where can I find a good neighborhood close to the area I described? Anybody close by looking for a roommate?

I've also heard that the area isn't exactly car enthusiast friendly. Can anybody shine some light on this? I heard tint is illegal in MD. Is living in DC/MD/VA better or worse due to the laws?

Thanks in advance.

Ben

VA sucks for modified cars. Might not want to have to commute across the Potomac either.

You'll probably also want an automatic transmission car for driving in traffic.

The area around there isn't the greatest.

Are you looking to rent or buy?

If you want a short commute to work, Arlington is an option, I would stay in the North Arlington area though, whatever you do stay away from Four Mile Run Rd. in South Arlington. Traffic in DC sucks, but then again riding the metro sucks too, I work in DC as well, sometimes I drive other times I take the metro, it's about the same price anyways. If you leave DC at 330pm tops, traffic will be fine, leave any time after that and you'll be stuck in the worst of the worst.

Some of the crappiest traffic in the nation.
I daily drive my 13 STI no issues aside from road work/ construction. Tint in DC/MD is allowed 35%. A nice secure garage is costly in DC. My friend pay 220/monthly area 1st and new York ave. Car scene DC awd meets. I've constantly seen 4-5 wrx/sti . I commute Columbia to DC daily.

Looking to rent for now. If I like the area I'll consider buying. So stay away from that area, look into Arlington, and traffic sucks. Got it.

35% all around huh? Don't like the sound of that either since I have 20% in back...

One of our job sites is on Capitol Hill in Seattle. Lets just say I've seen some off the wall stuff up there.

DuPont can't be any weirder .

Noted, I'm not exactly pumped about the area either. Only going over there if the compensation is right, hence the "possibly" in the title.

DC and garage shouldn't go in the same sentence. I hate parking in DC

I moved back to the area a few months ago, found a place in Arlington. It's not bad and passed inspections with a straight pipe exhaust. The inspectors are hit and miss. As far as the area goes its pretty awesome. A lot of enthusiasts and plenty of meets going on. Let me know of you need anything else as I'm pretty familiar with the area/might be able to help find a place.

Will you be working in the city proper? Or outside the city?

If you are working in the city do yourself a favor and live near a subway station. Your car, your wallet, and your sanity will thank you. The traffic here is awful and I personally think it's only a matter of time before you get into a fender bender. Also it's a lot cheaper to ride subway than pay for parking downtown.

Good neighborhoods can be found anywhere in the northwest quadrant of the city towards Maryland or cross the river to the southwest into Virginia (Arlington and onwards.) The eastern side of the area isn't all bad, but it's sort of a patchwork of crime and economic levels so it might be too confusing for an outsider.

If you're working outside the city it really depends on how far you're willing to drive for a commute. There's lots of nice areas spread around.

30. Nightlife and cool restaurants would be nice, but I'd rather have a quiet neighborhood near this stuff.
