Default Formula 1 2013 - Round 8: The Santander British Grand Prix at Silverstone Circuit

Last year's thread (with pics!): http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show....php?t=2372379

Situated in the farmland of Northamptonshire, England, just went of the M1, Silverstone is now in its 64th year and remains the spiritual home to Formula One, as well as the home track for most of the teams on the grid.

Last year, the teams battled not only each other, but the torrential rain that fell all day on Friday and again Saturday afternoon. Sunday's skies remained cloudy, but the sun warmed the dry track and the 125,000 spectators that came to see Fernando Alonso lead away from pole on his hard tires, followed closely by Mark Webber and Michael Schumacher on the option soft tires. The latter's grip faded quickly and he was soon supplanted by Felipe Massa and a hard-charging Sebastian Vettel. Toward the end Alonso opted to take the soft tires on his final stint (going H-H-S) and his pace faded a few laps from the end, allowing Webber (on hards) to sneak past under DRS for the win. Drivers going S-H-H fared better during the race. Standings at the end:

1. WEB
2. ALO
3. VET
4. MAS
5. RAI
6. GRO
7. MSC
8. HAM

This year, Sebastian Vettel arrives in the UK fresh off of his third win of the season, and his first at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve. Pirelli have opted for the hard and medium tires, going one step harder in the range for the options. Current standings:

1. VET (132)
2. ALO (96)
3. RAI (88)
4. HAM (77)
5. WEB (69)
6. ROS (57)
7. MAS (49)
8. DIR (34)

Contrary to Canada, this circuit features numerous high-speed corners and demands a high downforce configuration and rewards those cars with minimal drag. There will be two DRS zones this year to aid overtaking, one on the Wellington straight (as it was last year) and a second sector on the Hangar straight. Because of the need for high downforce, though, teams sacrifice top speed for grip in the corners and the speeds traps are approximately 13 kph slower than in Canada.

So who's it going to be on the top step this year? Mclaren are struggling massively, Lotus have had two poor races in a row, and Vettel appears to be hitting his stride. Can Alonso go one better than last year's result and close the ever-expanding gap to Vettel? Find out starting on June 28th!
