I am an instructor with a few of the clubs, I could tell you everything I know about autocross (should take 5-10min).

Mods should definitely be: sway bar, driver, tires, driver, driver, driver, more tires, decide on class, mod to class rules, then more driver mods.

I won't be able to make either of these. The Equip Rapide one should be fun since it's a mirror cross.

The following weekend is the NTAXS event at TMS on the 20th. I will be able to make this one, plus they are starting a little earlier to try and beat the heat.

Looks fast--but I'm certain I'll blow corner 3. Any idea where grid is? That looks like it's using up the entire bus lot.

Question

Pretty recent WRX owner here. I like the idea of autocross for a safe way to practice driving but how friendly are these events to newbies?

NTAXS sets up grid in the area across the street close the where the bathrooms are, then they pull out like 5-8 cars at a time. Looks like it'll be a fun course!

And Haptic, autocross people are generally very friendly to the noobs, but if I were you I would start out with a SCCA event. Much easier to keep up with and find help if you need it. You'll have a blast either way though.

Newbies are welcomed and embraced at all the local club events. Usually there are around 5-10 novice drivers (except at the scca events with as many as 20+ novices at events).

All the clubs have loaner helmets, instructors and plenty of people who are more than willing to help out. Novice course walks are done with all the clubs and you can get rides with instructors and/or have an instructor ride with you to help with course navigation and driving techniques.

All the club websites have novice sections with helpful advice and faqs.

Just to echo what 14STU said, this will be my third AutoX, and my first with NTAXS. I've done one with the BMW CCA and one with SCCA, and both were great. The SCCA event was bigger and a little better run, but both were totally welcoming and totally willing to help out a beginner.

I went out and watched a few laps today to get an idea of this whole autocross thing, and needless to say... I need to start doing this. When is the next event and how to get started!

^^ http://dfwautocross.com pretty good listing of the events goon on. Usually just go to the respective clubs site and it walks you trough it with FAQs etc.

Then just make sure your car is good on consumables; oil, brake pads, etc. And grab some painters tape for makin numbers.

I would go to a couple of events to make sure you enjoy them then buy a helmet (snell rated and I would suggest an open face helmet). Make sure you get a helmet with the correct classification and that it fits (try the same one in person before ordering online).

I'm officially signed up for the Aug. 4th Equipe Rapide autocross at Mesquite Memorial Stadium.

It's a charity autocross benefitting the Guns and Hoses foundation. So I get to have fun for a good cause too!

I did that one last year, they had policemen and firefighters race in a kia, I would go again if it wasn't at Mesquite Memorial.

This Sunday the SCCA is at the Dallas Raceway in Crandall, I am signed up for that one. I wish the ER event was there too.

Yeah I wish ER would decide to just have the event at Dallas raceway. Sam how are you liking your new tune? Does the turbo spool up any faster?
