Default So why ARE the BRZ and FR-S so similar?

This is probably a stupid question, and I haven't followed either of them because I'm waiting for more performance modifications/packages to see what the cars are capable of.

It seems like Subaru likes to deny that the FR-S is in any way similar. But look at them. Anyone that doesn't know them extremely well wouldn't be able to tell one debadged from the other. Why are they so similar? I can't really believe this was an accident "OH look, we both just came out with practically the same car at the exact same time..."

Wait, what? Subaru doesn't deny it. Subaru manufactures both of these cars. The BRZ, Scion FRS, and Toyota GT86 are all the same car aside from minor aesthetic / suspension differences.

The "twins" were a joint effort between Subaru and Toyota.

Don't think OP knows Toyota is a controlling interest in Fuji Heavy Industries, the parent company of which Subaru is a subsidiary of.

Why would they put effectively the same car on two different brands then? Just to see who could sell it better?

To change my opinion just a tiny bit: besides looking the same at a cursory glance, the FR-S kind of looks like a little bitch car with little Asian eyes for headlights or something, and more womanly curves. The BRZ looks far more aggressive and something that a moderately wealthy Japanese 18-year-old would own. The FR-S looks like something that the dealer tries to unload on stupid blonde women with chihuahuas in their purse. Otherwise IMO they're the same.

Oh also they said that the cars "maybe share a few screws" (subaru did).

Perhaps I used the wrong terminology then; I was under the impression that Toyota owned a majority share despite only having 16.5%.

Is this real life?

Toyota wanted a sports car but didn't want to build/expand another factory or devote a huge engineering team so they convinced Subaru to utilize their factory space and engineering teams. Toyota financed the venture. So thats why toyota gets the lions share of production.

Uh... hm... it wasn't an accident. Subaru builds both cars on the same assembly line and it was designed as a joint project between Toyota and Subaru. They are mechanically identical (under the hood, obviously there are cosmetic differences which have been listed a million different places) other than slightly different spring rates. If you open the hood of an FR-S there is a SUBARU logo stamped on the fender and the engine cover.

Good job explaining it without assuming I know anything at all. All the other posts assumed I knew something about how toyota and subaru work.

This is all you really need to understand.

Right after I got the BRZ I caught a FRS tooling around after dark. We pulled nest too me and was dying to know what headlights I had.

"It's a BRZ"
"yeah, what headlights are those tho, they're ****ing sick"
"..... It's a BRZ"
"... Those are stock?"
"Yeah"
"wow"
