Default computer savvy people- downloading romraider in Linux?

SO I have a chromebook(the whole operating system is google chrome, no windows or anything) but via this websites instructions http://lifehacker.com/how-to-install...-ful-509039343 I downloaded linux to my laptop, hoping I could download romraider and all the other goodies to it. I ordered a tactrix cable to data-log and finish e-tuning my new motor because my tuner moved 12 hours away.

I was wondering if downloading romraider and java to linux was even possible? I am not very tech savvy and hope I am not wasting my time. I would purchase a new laptop but being 17 and a waiter, money is tight and I was hoping to not have to use a friends laptop to data-log.

Might need an external harddrive and to have it run traditional Windows. Should be quite easy. Depending on how much disc space you have you can look into partitioning your current harddrive and installing Windows as is.

False, you don't need WINE to run rom raider. There is a linux download on romraiders website. Also WINE stands for "WINE is NOT a Windows Emulator"

As far as ECUFlash. I have been unable to ever flash on linux. This is the sole reason I even have a Windows Partition anymore.

And it stood for windows emulator before that. Any way you slice it, it still behaves, in more ways than not, like an emulator, regardless of how it executes. Furthermore, the op may not be familiar with linux, and thus wine will be of use to him.

First, props on installing Linux. Its a true tinkerer's operating system. Now to answer your questions.

Installing Java on Linux is absolutely possible. In fact it is quite easy, especially if you have already figured out how to get Linux installed. You're going in the right direction. Which distribution of Linux did you install BTW?

Before you try installing Java, you might want to check if it is already installed (probably is installed already if you are using any modern version of Linux). From a terminal try entering "java -version" and it should return something like

Code:
java version "1.7.0_17"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.7.0_17-b02)
Regarding Romraider, as has been mentioned, it does have a Linux version on the download page. If you look around the Romraider page I'm sure you'll find an install guide. The easiest way to install it would probably be to use your distro's built-in software manager. That does all the hard work for you.

That being said though I recommend learning how to use the command line. The command line is like a custom built racing WRX perfectly tuned - it can be intimidating and tough to drive at first but it is extraordinarily powerful when you learn the ins and outs of it.

Cheers

No. I've used an ubuntu netbook to log for years. There's a guide on the romraider forums. WINE is not necessary & would probably be a huge headache.

If there was an ecuflash for linux I could kick my M$ habit completely. RR works better for me in linux than it ever did in windows.

I have yet to find out how to make a tatrix work with linux and I've been running ubuntu for 6 years. Only generic VAG-COM cables work in linux for me and I use windows for flashing through ECUFLASH. Good luck

I've used it since ubuntu 9 up to most current version. Was worried about OS upgrades but it's stable on every new build.

Yes, If you are running Ubuntu just use a sudo command to install like every other application, but it would be easier to just Vmware an emulator of win 7. If you have any more questions or would like a detailed explanation PM me.
