Default 2000 legacy tranny problems

I know most of you guys might be like what is this so called automatic transmission i speak of but...

My wifes DD is having some transmission problems. Car is a 2000 Subaru Legacy.

When shifting from park into drive it takes a couple seconds to engage. it has been like that for a while and i was fine with that.

But now sometimes it just doesn't feel like shifting into gear at all and it won't go into gear unless i give some gas a bit, also sometimes when stopping at a light the car will drop out of gear and do the same thing as if i shifted from park to first.

anyone know what could be causing this?

Did you check the tranny fluid with the car warmed up and driven for at least 10 miles? You also need to slowly cycle the gear selector from park to 1 and back to park before checking the level.

In regards to your problem. There is an anti-drain back valve that sometimes will fail. This will allow the fluid to drain back into the pain instead of staying in the lines. So the pump has to fill lines again before the trans will go anywhere.

It's possible something got damaged from those startups without oil.....you may want to consult a good trans shop in your area. If there's a regonial forum for where you leave, try posting there, and see if anyone has any recommendations.

I know a good place in the seattle/lynwood area...

i have a similar problem with my 2000 2.5 rs, except that it doesn't drop out sitting still unless i put it park. the shop i work at the more experienced guys said it sounds like one of the valve body seals is leaking down when the car is turned off. mine also always goes into reverse i don't know if you noticed that. it will go into reverse but when i go into drive it sits for a little while before going into gear. if find anything out could you let me know? thanks

Unhappy

I am having the same problem with my 2001 Legacy. It used to hesitate when putting it into any of the drive gears D, 3, 2, 1. I did check the fluid and it was on the fuller side. Which concerned me, and eventually it occausionally sould not go into gear. I would rev the rpms a bit and go through the gears and turn to car off and on until it would work taking me aprox 10min to get it to engage at first. Then we removed some of the fulid. And not the car will not engage at all in the drive gears, but reverse works perfect. PLZ if anyone has any advise im stuck.

Have you tried replacing the fluid? You only mention removing some.

guys, fluid is the first thing to check...condition color whats it smell like.
and level. should be a nice red.
you can try paying to flush the unit around $80 bucks as a last resort.
if not the likely cause are worn clutch plates for a delayed shift.
If its over 2002+ their was an issue with the low clutch that caused a delayed shift. Not a do it yourselfer job. Not cheap to fix.
