Default Borla Hush audition

Is there anyone in the northbay with a WRX fitted with a borla hush (3") CB exhaust for me to listen to up close and personal (i.e. not a sound clip)?

I swapped out my Stromung 3" Twin-tip CB for an STi set-up. Being an oldster, I like the quieter set-up, but miss the twin-tip. Both the STi and the Stromung will be for sale if I like the sound of the Hush.

So, anyone around for me to eavesdrop?

Many thanks.

Ken

Where are you located exactly? The Hush is very quiet, probably in between the Stromung and Sti cb.

I'm in Point Reyes.

Quiet is fine. It's the twin tip I'm after.

I would hope, in loudness, it's closer to the STi catback then the Stromung

It's still loud when you get on it. It's noise level is very dependent on engine load. Idle and low loads it pretty quiet, but it's definitely louder than the STi at high flow.

May be too loud for us. Hearing will tell all - audition scheduled tomorrow.

Thanks for the input!

no way man, its sooo quiet. at idel I swear is no different than stock and crushing around its just a throatier sound not any louder though. You hear it when you really get on it, the exhaust really opens up.

I have the borla hush on my 04 wagon with Helix up/down pipe. I love it. No rasp, ugly tones or popping. As kh15 said, quiet at idle but when you open it up it sounds fantastic.

No way the hush is anywhere near stock STi noise level. I have an 03 wrx sedan with invidia downpipe and borla hush twin tip catback, my dad has an 06 STi with invidia downpipe only and stock catback, and mine is much much louder.

Maybe the hush is quiet compared to some other exhaust, but it is not quiet at all. It does have a smoother and lower frequency tone that makes it less harsh on the ears than some other tin can exhausts, but even for me it gets annoying at times.

But I have found a trick to make the borla twin tip model more silent, it works very well for the longer family trips with baby and GF:

tone is different than loudness. the borla hush has a deeper tone than stock that many mistake for it being louder at idle. sure its louder but not by much at all!

Well I would use the exact same argument and say many confuse a noise to be less loud than it is because it has a deeper tone.

There are some places I go for work that have different types of machines. Some make very low pitch percussion with no higher frequency, while others do more of a high pitch hissing sound. Initially you would think the lower frequency noise is less loud when in fact they are equally dangerous for your ears.

But back to the topic of cars exhausts our loudness "feel", I get sore ears and sometimes put earplugs for long highway trips. Also when my gf uses the car I can hear her very easily blocks away while I only hear the sti arriving when it is up the corner of the street.

But these comparisons are not what make me find the borla vs stock difference big, it's when I'm driving the car. I guess we are just having different tolerances to loudness, and loudness is somewhat subjective. That being said I still do not understand you guys seem to feel like it is anywhere near stock.

Forgot to mention, my downpipe is catless too, there is certainly a difference with a catted hush setup but I have not compared.

So how did the audition go?

We liked the Hush. Deeper than the Stromung and not as loud. Not as quiet as the STi but quiet enough - since I'm running a cat in the DP. It will be on my car soon. Thanks John.
