They provide a mounting location for mounting the tweeter from the dB6501 set. They go in the dash location where the OEM/Kicker tweeters would mount.

When you guys are talking about the "stock" speakers , what exactly ate you talking about? I have a sport limited with navigation, can my speakers get better? Better plug and play options that is?

They can get better but the real benefit is getting mid-level aftermarket speakers, proper mounting adapters/spacers, 2 pairs or wiring harnesses, and doing the install with proper aftermarket gear rather than the basic Kicker "upgrade" that you can get from Subaru (this is it here:
SUBARU 2012 IMPREZA KICKER UPGRADED SPEAKERS : Amazon.com : AutomotiveSUBARU 2012 IMPREZA KICKER UPGRADED SPEAKERS : Amazon.com : Automotive
)

You might pay slightly more to do it right but the improvement over stock will be much better with better speakers.

I'll be putting in the rear speakers (Polk DB651) probably tomorrow, or this weekend. Any interest in me taking more pics of the full process? I'll be using the spacers from subaru audio, but won't be doing much sound dampening at this time.

If you send me the pictures when you are done I will re-host them and put the writeup on Subaru audio. I might have another set of Impreza shots but I can always host more than one pictorial.

I'll give you credit, of course.

They don't NEED one but you will get better performance out of them with an amp. This is not any different from most speakers, so nothing is special about the dB6501. They are not power-hungry speakers that NEED an amp to sound good.

Sensitivity on the 6501s is 92dB, which is above average.

I run mine with a flat EQ curve, a sub, and the rears disabled. Under those conditions, stock head unit power is more than enough for normal sound levels.

I want to upgrade the speakers in my XV, but its still so rattle-free and quiet that I'm hesitant to pop panels off the interior.

Do the factory tweeters get their signal via a crossover? Or is the full spectrum sent to all speakers?

There is a small capaciter that blocks bass to the tweeters. The door speakers get full range, so it is not a true crossover like an aftermarket component setup.

Agreed, but just get the "regular" dB651 coaxials fo rthe rear. No reason to go slim. You need adapters with any of the options and the non-slim are cheaper. http://www.subaruaudio.net/subaru-speaker-spacers/

Is there typically adequate space in the door panel even with the speaker spacers?

I have detailed photos of the spacer and db651 install on the rear doors. I took them this weekend, but just haven't had time to get them up yet. I'll get them done tonight!

Yes. In the regular Impreza, a 3/4" adapter/spacer will fit behind the door panel. IN the XV version the best option is a 1/2" thick adapter.

I see. So a 6.75" speaker should fit without any modification? I'm looking at these http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0015NRQ5S

My application database shows a 5 5/8" cutout and a 2.5" depth for the TS-D1720C. They will fit with a spacer but no way that a 5 5/8" cutout would work in the doors without one.

Noted ! I bought :
  • A pair of DB6501 and a pair of DB651
  • Alpine MRP-F300 Amp
  • 4 Adapters from subaru audio

Will the tweeters fit on their original spot ? (next to the mirror)

Default Polk DB651 install, 2012 Subaru Impreza Sedan

Open the door:

Use a slotted screwdriver to open the screw covers carefully:

This is what you see once you pry everything away carefully, and tilt the bottom out and lift off:

The view open:

Place new speaker on spacer and mark where to drill holes, drill holes, install to door:

That's it. I forgot to take a pic before I closed everything up with the speaker installed. I'll update sometime when I pull the door off to install sound dampening/barrier.

Btw, this thing took me 10 minutes to figure out how to detatch =/:

You simply press in the middle of the red dots, where the yellow line is, and it easily comes apart. I was trying to press the sides together.

Happy to answer any questions!

The spacer was nice to have, it put my mind at ease about drilling into the sheet metal. You wouldn't have to have it, though the bracket that came with the DB651 speakers didn't exactly seem robust.

Did you use an adapter as well for your tweeter install? If so, what material thickness did you use for the adapter?
