His old car had one of the minority engines that consumed oil. Wouldn't you be disappointed by that too?

It IS a design flaw, although one that only affects a small percentage of engines. I would not expect his new car to be similarly affected.

Its ok. i still ignore asskip. he lies a lot anyway.
I would say overall my recently produced 2013 xv seems better built than my my12 Impreza in several ways, some subtle and some obvious.
It has a better paint job than the old one. Much less orangepeel, deeper looking and the fit and gaps are all tighter. The interior seems to have firmer padding on the seats, as well as a tougher, more durable feeling fabric. There are several other little things about the way its put together that seem better. The rear hatch seal looks a little different. it looks like it was pinched right where it seals over the latch mechanism. I'll look at another xv and see if its just mine or if they all are like that.
It drives great, has a better feelimg shifter, and better feeling gearing. It has "revised ratios".
The suspension, obviously, is beefed up and is really nice to have for driving on a variety of road types. Or non-roads...
The rear diff is heavier duty, so the car can tow while not voiding the warranty.
There are just a lot of things that I like about it.
When I actually did some reasearch, I found the list of upgrades/mods that come on the XV to be pretty awesome.

LOL, he trashes Subaru's and the design of the new 2.0 boxer engine that uses 0w-20, then turns around and buys another Subaru that happens to use the same exact redesigned engine as the one he had.

In any case, look at the bright side, Subaru did come thru for him, in the end, and the odds that his new car with the same exact engine will burn oil are probably less than 1%.

I guess he did learn something from reading my posts...maybe subconsciously...

79, congrats.

when you've had it a while, i'd be curious to hear how much a drop in fuel economy you find. i know what the sticker says, but nothing beats real life numbers

Will do!
I havent even tried to calculate mileage... I havent even used the readout on the dash. I'm just carefully and dutifully varying rpm's and being much more scientific in my break in process. I have 225 miles on it so far.
Another plus- free oil - FOR LIFE.

I far exceeded the mpg #'s for my Impreza, so I doubt the XV will be too bad. I'm expecting my average yo go down by one or two mpg tops.

The new car looks sweet 79. I hope it doesn't give you the same headaches. I am thinking about moving on to a TDi Jetta, but not sure if I am ready to pull the plug on my oil burner. On a side note, I have heard great things about Mastro. Many moons ago I used to work in the Sandord / Longwood area and have dealt with them on numerous occassions.

I didnt think I'd like it- BUT I LOVE THIS CAR! Best part is its never even been on BILL BRYAN'S LOT!!! MMMMM feels so much better.
Disclaimer- if it does end up burning some oil, I WON'T BE SURPRISED OR UPSET. I am going to enjoy the *//* out of this car. It feels so much better in every way.
Thanks to MASTRO SUBARU for being excellent folks to deal with.
No more bottoming out on crappy roads!
Congrats 79!, glad to hear another impreza owner escaping out of the oil consumption problem, be it being a new car. Any chance you can fill us in in the deal? Got any pix of the new car?
One more thing, I'm looking to get a bumper cover for the impreza to cover up some existing damage, but can't find the hard plastic ones in canada, only for the XV, which I like the look of better anyway. Question is this, are you able to tell if there is a difference in the top of the bumper where the bumper cover goes between the impreza and XV? As in shape and body line
Thanks! Hope the XV treats you right.
It's nice to see that Subaru does care for their customers, even though sometimes they do everything by the book, and takes a really long times, a positive outcome is usually the case.

Hey 79, congrats on your new purchase!

I had recently thought a lot about "upgrading" to an XV because of the higher ground clearance and a couple of other small things. Unfortunately, the things that I don't like about my 2012 Sport Premium are not any different for the XV. e.g. Same crappy seats, not enough HP & torque for my liking, lack of in-cabin tech, poor paint, etc. Also, I'm not convinced that Subaru engineers have completely figured out the cause of the oil consumption problem. The last thing I would want is another brand new Subaru that burns oil like mine now.

Anyway, I am glad that you're happy with your new car. Here's hoping that you don't experience any problems like with your last one.

Im fairly certain all will be well. Mastro Subaru are the ones who stepped in and gave me a great deal.
Yeah, I feel ya Jrobb, but so far it seems my 13 has a better paint job and firmer seats.
And if it does burn some oil, I'll not worry...

One thing I dug up on the XV is it has lower gearing. A slightly lower first and fifth and a 4.44 final drive.
And a MY2007 Forester radiator.
Too bad we didnt get the 6mt dual-range that the Aussies and Latin markets got...
Oh well. I dont really need to do HARDCORE offroading or towing. I think this thing is about as ideal a car as I'm going to find in the current car market.
Feels good to be actually proud to own a car!

Here's a pretty cool vid of the XV showing off some of its capabilities.

Unhappy and very frustrated with the oil light coming on on my 2012 Impreza this started at just under 10k Miles and goes on between oil changes.. My dealer is telling me it is normal... Really?! I am making car payments on a brand new car so I do not need to worry about this kind of thing!! How much is MY time worth ? .. I love sitting in a dealers waiting room every two week!! NOT!

If it was a design flaw, I would expect more cars to be affected. I am betting it was a manufacturing defect.

There may be a correlation between revving the engine high and burning oil, but this is hard to prove -- drivers are not always open about how they drive the car.

I do know I have no issue with burning oil, now 12,000 miles in, and my car was among the first built for sale in North America.

That sucks. I think every pissed off owner should let Subaru of America know what they think.
I still am not happy at SOA's reactioe matter.
I dont think they are specific enough in the manual about what kind of break in the engine needs. Or maybe its a design or assembly issue.
I will say after dealing with it for 18 months or so in my Impreza, that unless one is burning more than a quart per 5000-7000 miles, its no big deal. I could have fought soa more, and racked up more miles doing r&d for them and depreciating my investment further. But getting a new car from a different dealer who cares helped me to rid myself of the extra stress.

I do know I have no issue with burning oil, now 12,000 miles in, and my car was among the first built for sale in North America.
While I was doing the second, proper consumption test, I drove my car with little regard to its mechanical well being, working it hard and giving it plenty of revs and downshifting. And the oil consumption stayed at the same steady rate of not enough to warrant repair but enough to agitate and annoy.
My observations were that driving style wasnt causing the oil loss.

Now @ 300 on the XV still loving the car. It does have a couple small quirks but its just a sweet car to have. Have been very carefully keeping the rpms/load varied, so I've resisted the urge to get impatient and drive it without being very conscious of what the rpm's are doing. I let it warm up gently, and then start doing half throttle to two-thirds throttle pulls to 3700ish and then engine brake to 3000. I do similar in each gear and when cruising i vary the rpms by annoying the drivers behind me by varying the rpms even more. Sometimes downshifting for a bit to.vary the revs even more. Once 500 miles comes, I'll drain the factory fill and fill.with Amsoil and start revving a little more and start to drive it more "normally". But I am definitely being very careful and proactive with break in. No gramma driving, but not thrashing it.
My last car had me watching the mpg's more than the rpm's for.the first 1000.
Wish me (good) luck!

I burn zero oil. Atleast not to this point. 7200 miles or so. I kept factory oil till 27xx miles but after about 1200 or 1400 started running it harder to seat rings. I've always driven every car or truck harder than not, yet other than my drag cars, I've never ever had engine or tranny issues with anything. Im hoping the subie will not be the exception. Id break it in like you should for first 11-1500 miles then drive it harder. My brother babies his cars around like an old lady and is constantly having issues with his. I don't know exactly what oil they came out with, I do know on past cars I've had built we broke them in with "break in" oil before we switched to synthetic. I'd be a little more concerned using full synthetic too early than I would revving engine to early. But that's just my opinion, it could be exactly opposite in reality. I just know what I did seems to work for me thus far. Hopefully I don't start a post tomorrow about how a rod looks coming thru the block. Lol

Its all good. I agree with what you're saying.
But there arent any special additives in the factory oil. Its Idemitsu 0w20.
With some residual assembly lube.
I think I broke the last one in too conservatively.
I'm still not "going hard". I'm just varying rpms and load and not giving two ****s about mpg's for the first 1000-1200.
