Hey guys,

I am moving to Victoria B.C. Soon and I was wondering if i should change or remove anything as far as the laws there? I am currently in California and the cops don't seem to mind anything on my car so far. I have had the mods on my car for about a year now. Aftermarket on my car listed below.

Mods: K&N Intake, 2" turbo inlet pipe, 3" Full turbo back exhaust, catless up pipe, Walboro 255 Fuel pump,
Kyb Struts with swift springs, White oem rims, Greddy Blow off valve, Glowshift Gauges,
2 Sparco Rev Seats, Tuned through Rom Raider, Blue Interior LED Lights,
Rally Armor Skid Plate, Stoptech Drilled and Slotted Rotors, New Brake Pads, Turbo Timer
, and 8k HID's in Headlights (projectors) and foglights (OEM).

I'm not sure if you have to do this if you're moving here, but normally when people import cars into canada they have to pass an inspection. Because you're moving here, i don't know if you have to do this.

But things that will fail you on the inspection are missing safety items (no more airbags in seats...?), missing emissions things (uppipe they would be unlikely to notice, but it should have one cat in there somewhere), and HID conversions would be a definite no-no.

it's kind of a weird system because there is no annual inspection or anything so I could go and do all of those things and have no problems but if I bring a car into the country with those things I won't be able to insure it without inspection.

I am not going to be importing the car. I am going up just for school months (sept - may) therefore I will not need inspections as the car will stay reg'ed in the US. I am mostly worried about police and I was wondering what their tolerance is, etc.

oh you're fine then. Just don't drive like an asshat and you won't have problems. If you do get pulled over for some other thing (speeding, all that stuff) they will probably tack on as much as possible if you're even the slightest bit of a dick.

I am not a dick to anyone really haha. Also I have a radar detector. Any idea if that is legal? Also I read alot about how to treat cops when you get pulled over. I have yet to get pulled over in the states in California where I would always get pulled over in my Honda.

Radar detector? hell.. I haven't seen the cops here use it once on the highway on the drive to work each day (downtown vic to saanichton)

you should be fine for the time you're here though. Might want to check how long you can drive on your US license if you're staying here for that long though.

When I came from australia, I was supposed to only keep and drive on my Aus license for the first 3 months and then change it over - I used it for 6 months no problem. But I'm not sure what the US/Canadian deal is. Same thing with Insurance...

Very interesting. I really appreciate that input. That helps alot. I will only have it here for like 8 months and I assume as long as my US stuff is up to date it should't be a problem. I just use the radar detector as a precaution. Saved my ass a couple times with the California Highway patrol. Is there a big Subaru crowd on the island? meetups etc?

radar detector is legal in BC
if You're not planning registering the car here You don't have to through the inspection and won't have any problem here.
just make sure Your insurance is up to date
and Canadian police (called RCMP =o)) is lenient to guests (unlike american cops =o))

No legal issues with having a radar detector but as a suggestion if you do get pulled over/ check stop put it out of sight. Cop in Victoria specifically used it against me saying that me having it means I speed. (Also you're not likely to see as many RCMP in Vic, more so municipal police)

Not illegal but if you get caught with one I'm sure there will be other infractions found. Also if you do get pulled over the fastest way to a ticket is to be a dick. Be polite and the courtesy is normally returned. That said here in Vic we have cops that only do traffic so getting yourself out of ticket if you already have multiple will be tough. The best thing to do is be nice and pray the cop doesn't show in court.

(I live in the Yukon and go to school in Vic) In terms of the radar detector I know its legal to own one and also to have one installed in the vehical but you actually can't have it plugged in and running stupid laws. Anyways to avoid mentioning anything illegal just drive with it and if you "accidently" have it plugged in while driving unplug that sucker before he gets to your window because you'd be suprised how often they notice stuff like that. anyways apart from that dont worry about the mods, BC and Yukon has a pretty lenient system. Hell in the yukon 20 years ago people mesured distances by how many beers you drank while driving (not a joke) not that I reccomend you do that of course but it puts things into some perspective.

regarding what you have posted and what everyone else has posted:
If your a student you can run on your insurance from Cali as long as your residing here temporarily. If you 'move' here you have time limitations.

Side window tint & no front plate seems to draw extra attention but from the sounds of things you shouldnt have any issues.
