If you change your own, you'll never have to worry about anyone pouring 7 quarts into your crankcase.

I have a set of rhino ramps I no longer use... ahhh that 3" of lift on my XV makes all the difference!

That Pennzoil is a great deal, and uoa's have shown it to be good stuff.
I saw Valvoline 0w20 in my Walmart last time. It was even cheaper than the Pennzoil.

Maybe so, but unless it's rated as highly as the Pennzoil Platinum, I won't make that switch. $4/qt (when buying the 5-qt jug on sale) is plenty cheap enough for me.

Have you researched to see how well-loved the Valvoline 0W-20 is?

No.
But so far pretty much all 0w20's seem to be good oils as far as testing.
There will always be the stigma of m1 and Subarus, but I think even it has been shown to be good oil. I'm fairly sure the Valvoline is good stuff.
Has there been any negative reports of ANY 0w20?
I just default to amsoil when wondering what is the best...

Changed my oil @3500 miles with Mobil Super (Mobil 0? ) 0w20 and I have no complaints so far. I don't plan on switching so we'll see how it does long term.

Use whatever 0W20 is on sale for $5-6 at NAPA on any given week. All 0W20 is good, even store brand, it has to be, it's a strict spec. 0W20 oil is pretty much a commodity.

I used to use Mobil1 0-40 in my MINI Cooper S. I ahve a good friend who is a Euro mechanic as well as the head mechanic for a few SCCA race teams specilizing in MINIs and Porsche. He recommended Motul to me and I switched over to that for the MINI and it's all I've used in the Subaru so far as well. I use 5-40 8100 X-Cess in the Subaru now. After 70k miles in the MINI the valve covers and vales looked great, real clean and no wear. I haven't done an oil analysis but I see no reason to stray from Motul and he sells me 5L for $40 cash.

I think the M1 vs. Subaru engines has to do more with the wrx/sti high compression engines.

I was planning on only using walmarts M1 long term as well, until I found kendall 0-w20 (which has almost identical specs to amsoil) for even cheaper then the M1.

Im sure any 0-w20 is fine with a regular oil change interval.

I saw some black bottles of german castrol in 0w30. That would be an interesting oil to try anf then get a uoa.

I wouldn't put a 0W-30 in our 2012+ Imprezas, which call for 0W-20.

Ive ran conventional 5w30 Syntec in my 12' to see if it affected anything. I may have lost .5 mpg...
No ill effects in the 4000 miles it was in there.
Further down the line if I do.any light offroading, I'd consider german castrol for my XV. That german stuff is supposed to be pretty badass oil.

Oil is oil, as long as you use the recommended weight you should not run into problems.

As mentioned, I and others have been guinea pigs and tried 5w's.
The manual says it *CAN* be used. The reccomended 0w20 is for epa #'s.
That said- my brand new XV has Amsoil oe 0w20, and will likely run idemitsu for most of my oil.changes for the entire life of the car. But if I anticipate any towing or heavy duty use, I'll consider a good 0w30.
I have had a dealer put 0w30 in my last car. I couldnt tell any difference.
I'm not at all suggesting that w20 is bad or anything like that. But this is an oil discussion and fb's and oil are something I have spent a lot of time (almost 2 years) experimenting with and researching.

Go over to the BRZ forum and check, plenty of them are running various 5w40's.
Being that they are sports cars, I think most owners are more looking for extreme oil.protection rather than mpg's. Their cars all spec the same 0w20 ours do.
I get free oil changes for life so I have no reason to run anything else. I only have amsoil in it now because I do my own early first oil change.

Yeah, I have six of the black Roki "160" filters myself. They will get me through the warranty period, after which I'll switch to something like the FRAM XG7317 filters that seem to be universally praised, even by people who hate FRAM products.

Yeah. More like Red Delicious vs. Granny Smith apples.

No but higher compression, direct injection, and a few other things that are harder on oil
