$22K @ 21% APR will do that. Those terms are horrendous, but I suppose they didn't put a gun to her head.

Probably traded in a car they were upside down on, had poor credit, and took the first offer coming across a table

Years ago I met a guy (mutual friend) who financed a loaded Toyota 4 Runner @ 12.9% interest for 96 months. He paid MSRP + extended warranty + "paint protection" + [everything the finance guy had to sell]... Payments were close to $800/month. He was in the military and the truck was the first major purchase he ever made. He literally walked into the dealer (after getting a ride there), said "I want that one" and signed the first paper that was slid across the table to him after they ran his credit. After 2 years of owning the truck, his payoff balance was still more than the initial sticker price... He wanted to get rid of the truck since he just got out of the service and finally had to deal with other bills.

Anyway my point here is that there is almost no limit to the bad decisions people can make when buying a car.

Flyboy got it - she has bad credit and little common sense. No trade in. A sucker is born every minute...

Yes, Subaru bought back my '12 Impreza and I bought a new '12 Impreza.

Wow, I step away from this thread for a couple months and Charles buys a new Subaru? Never saw that coming. Hopefully this one doesn't consume oil like his other car, or he'll hit rock bottom.

Anyways, 79letour, good luck with the new one. We have been telling you to trade your damn car in for MONTHS!

This stupidity isn't limited to car purchases. This same short-sightedness and lack of common sense is what got this country (and beyond) into the housing bubble that almost killed us back in 2008-2009. The country is still recovering from that cluster-eff.

If someone doesn't have the knowledge or common sense to know that they're about to make a stupid purchase decision, then there's a lender out there who will happily screw that person over with a loan.

What kind of verbiage did you use to get them to buy back your car? How did they value your car and come to a buyback price?

After putting a new engine in the car. I've had to take it back twice, and they are still working on it. First time they gave me my car back I drove it 500 ft and it started misfiring pretty bad. All the idiot lights came on and i took it right back to the dealer. They kept it for about a week and told me it was a bad spark plug. Picked it up the 2nd time and it lasted about 10 miles. The idiot lights came on, heard a knock and an air leaking noise. Took it back they told me the catalytic converter went bad and they have a new one on order. That was a week ago and I haven't heard anything since. I'm guessing the new cat didn't fix the problem. On top of all that my car has a nice new dent in the door that wasn't there when I dropped it off. I'm thinking about cutting my losses and getting a new car. Any advice on that process?

Call the dealer and ask for the owners name. That will get them working on this issue a lot faster.

Place a second call to SOA and open a formal warranty complaint requesting a replacement vehicle:

Customer Service: 1-800-SUBARU3 (1-800-782-2783)

Hours of Operation:

7:30 a.m. - 8:00 p.m. (EST) Monday through Thursday
10:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. (EST) Friday
9:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. (EST) Saturday

Written correspondence can be sent to:

Subaru of America, Inc.
Subaru Plaza
P.O. Box 6000
Cherry Hill, NJ 08034-6000
Attn: Customer/Dealer Services

This would have been my first action after receiving a "repaired" car that immediately broke down.

Sounds like they've had your car plenty long enough for a lemon law buyback. Investigate your particular states requirements, but you have to be getting close, if not past...

As Zeeper said, call up Subaru (Customer Dealer Services) and get the communication started with them. Prior to calling them have all your information ready to spout to them such as all the dates, the problems, the damage to your car. My communication with SOA was critical in getting a buy back, without them it would have been a whole lot harder. Look up the lemon law statutes for your state. See where you stand.

For my car, I was the first on this forum (and one of the first in this county) to take delivery on the new Impreza. My car was #175 made off the line. As such I had a problem with my airbag system, as a result engineers from FHI/Denso from Japan flew in to diagnose my car. The result was a TSB being created for the newest of Imprezas. At any rate, my car had ~500 miles on it and spent 4 out of 7 weeks in the dealership since taking delivery. At that point I told my SOA Customer Dealer Rep that I want to lemon law the car given I met the criteria. They then agreed to buy the car back from me. It all worked out in the end because I was able to get upgraded to a fully loaded limited since it was the only car they had in inventory that matched the color (that was a special circumstance, so I wouldn't expect to have that happen).

Bottom line, know the laws, know your facts and have an open line of communication with SOA.

Thanks for the help guys.

Unfortunately the car needs to be less than 1 year old and have less than 18k miles on the odometer. I am barely over the 1 year mark but have 29k on the odometer. So even though this excludes my car from the law, it still meets 2 of the criteria; Being in the shop for 30 days and taking the car to the shop 3 times for the same problem. I've been keeping a detailed reccord of all the problems. I will def give SOA a call today and request a buyback. Thanks again guys.

Sounds like the mileage is too high for the Lemon Law, but this is clearly covered under the new car warranty so go to SOA as planned.

So I just got off the phone with the service department at my dealership. Its been exactly two weeks since I dropped my car off and I wanted a status update. Apparently the short block arrived last week, but the heads are on backorder. They couldn't even give me an ETA for the heads so I'm guessing at the very least, they'll have my car for a few more weeks.

What do you guys think about the situation? Should I be on the phone with SOA and be demanding some type of compensation? Or should I be inquiring about the possibility of a buy back? I'm just so heated about this whole deal. I almost don't even want my car back even if they're able to fix it 100%. Just too many bad feelings associated with that car

Yes. Start out by asking for a buy-back. If the Customer Service Rep says "no", then escalate the situation to his/her manager. If the answer remains a "no", then ask what they can do to keep you a loyal Subaru customer.

Good luck!

I would call SOA. Stay calm. But don't expect any miracles.
What did you get for a loaner/rental?

They gave me a base 2013 Impreza 4-door CVT loaner.

I called SOA. They are awaiting documents from the dealership. Thy can't do much until they receive it. Ive had a 2013 Forrester, crosstrek and Suzuki Kizashi all as loaners. I miss driving my manual though.

Ive seen exactly one kizashi on the road ever. Looked better in person than in pics but it still looked ugly to my eyes. How do they drive?
And Jrobb- do you like the cvt? I had fun on some dirt roads etc but greatly prefer the 5mt even though it isn't ideal. I felt like the cvt was a little more tail happy in loose traction scenarios. The 5mt seems a little more planted and predictable. idk maybe it was/is all just subjective and I just think that the 5mt is better. Anyhow that my commentary. What say ye, J?

Honestly, I'm actually quite surprised at how much I like driving the CVT. I've always been a manual transmission type of guy, but I feel that the CVT goes well with this car. Also, the CVT equipped Impreza actually feels quicker and more responsive than my manual Impreza. As far as noise is concerned, I don't find the CVT to be any noisier than the 5-speed. I don't hear that "CVT whine" that everyone's always talking about. Gas mileage has also been better than in my 5-speed, but I expected as much. I'm quite pleased overall with the CVT. It's nowhere near as bad as I imagined it to be.

If I were to do it all over again, I would probably have to think long and hard about which transmission I would choose for my Impreza instead of just jumping into a manual.

A couple of other notable things about my 2013 loaner:

It has a nice and firm, non squeaking driver's seat. Feels like Subaru may of implemented the seat fix in the 13 +. Also, no low oil light in almost 2000 miles! It's almost hard to believe considering I expect to see it illuminate every 900 miles or so.

I almost want to call the dealer and tell them that they can keep my car and I'll hold on to the loaner.
