People hated on an S4 in traffic? Why? Compared to an STi? I live in opposite world, I guess. I liked being invisible when I had my S4. I removed all the S badges and bought a 1.8 badge to put on the trunk. Only place anyone realized what it was would be on the track.

It did self destruct.....repeatedly.....and then some more.

So what parts broke repeatedly on your S4? The motor? Electronics?

I'm always curious about problem areas with other cars. It seems like many cars have them.

Lmao, right right sure sure. Sorry, but the only way you beat a 2013 with your car is if he couldn't drive and it was a manual. The dsg runs 13.0 in avg weather repeatedly, all day long.

I should say this now, the S4 i had was Imola yellow while the STI is black. Im sure that explains it all. Initially I didn't think it would matter all that much but the color makes a huge difference.

For example, making a left turn out into traffic oncoming cars will honk and or wave their arms as if you are cutting in front of them when they are nowhere near you. This actually happened more than once, about three times.

People at my job who i dont even know coming up to me talking about the car. Im talking non car enthusiasts. Corolla drivers. Obv the enthusiasts want to talk about the STI while the regular people probably have no idea what the car is. I prefer it that way.

Overall I can say I feel more comfortable in the STI while the S4 made me nervous. I should have just bought this car first. I can't really imagine replacing this car with anything at this point. Only way is the next sti is a revolutionary step up or vw comes out with a golf rs with the 2.5L 5cyl. I feel luxury cars aren't really for me anymore.

Have not driven S4 but I think it's one classy and sexy ride. Not over the top, but with nice luxury. Can't really be compared to Suby. Everything Impreza screams cheap inside (love the exterior), but then it's not a car for luxury. Two different vehicles targeting different demographic...

Having said that, I have a Q7 for family hauler that is infested with problems, and it has just over 30k miles.. Bulbs blew out out of nowhere countless times. Water entering the cabin due to stupid drainage design. Just few days ago, an amplifier went out turning off MMI completely (rear camera, navi, ac, heater all not functioning). Never have I been so glad I bought extended warranty (car is 2009) - but I'll be getting rid of that car well before the warranty expires for the next owner's sake.

With these problems, there still are enough things that I love about Audi for me to not hate it. Fantastic and ergonomic interior, technology and convenience is amazing and exterior looks great.

Bottom line is that... you'll never know unless you live with it. Different people with different purpose for a car. Performance isn't everyone's top priority.

aaaand I want a GD STi for the winter

Before I bought my WRX, I looked at the S4...But, once I saw the S4 sticker price and read about their reliability in forums, I had to rule it out.

I have several friends with Audi's of various years including an RS4 and the only thing I saw break was a 10 year old A4 transmission. I hear lots of stories but first hand they have been legit cars IMO.

Guys,

new rule. You can't comment on a cars reliability unless you have owned one.

ok here goes.

2000 jeta 1.8 t, 90k miles. One turn signal failed and alternator died at 88k.

2008 a4 s line. 66k. zero issues zero dollars on maintenance.

2009 passat 3.6 4 motion. Amazing car. Flawless to 70k.

vw touareg tdi. Only had it to 20k. Loved it!

2013 s4...888 miles....lol.

2000 rs....perfect, 72 k
2002 wrx. Failed clutch ....twice....my bad!!

vw and Audi have come a long way, I have never been let down. Subaru was great too!

I love Subaru and recommend them to everyone that asks about a reliable, awd car.

The test drive really did me in after owning a Subaru.

After my 2011 sti was totalled, I ordered my 2013 sti last August. My parents were like, hey if you're starting over, why not get an "adult" car and call it a day? I went to my local Audi dealership (Don Rosen Imports- Conshohocken, PA - salesmen was a dick. I have emails to prove it). Test drove the S5 and loved it.

People kept telling me that once the warranty was out...I'd be screwed. Kind of scared me but I still wanted it. Eventually, I decided against it only because of the mileage that I'd put on it. Less than a year and I already have 15K on my sti.

In retrospect, if I was going to keep it relatively stock, I would buy the S4/S5 but since I wanted to do some modding, I opted for the sti again. Once I get married, I'll pick up an S3....it should be available by than haha

S4 will cost you more in the long run, so make sure you like it more. Used audis lose ther value fast as well( because everyone knows trouble is on way)

Default 2013 Sti Hatch or 2013 Audi S4 6MT....?

Ok time to Rez this old ass thread with update!

S4 has 37,000 trouble free miles and running great.

Looking at S3 and wife hates 6mt. It will be in a month or two when I trade in ill post pics ect. It will be monsoon gray, the black is nice for 15 seconds way too much work!

Default Audi vs Subaru

Since the thread has been revisited, I will add a comment:

Had a 2005 wrx wagon from 30,000 miles until a couple months ago when it hit 145,000 miles. Started with it stock, went to stage two and eventually did the upgraded turbo, injectors, custom tune, etc. Car was always dependable, even with multiple engine and suspension mods. When it came time to replace the car I drove a couple 2013 STI's and realized I would need to modify from stock immediately to even come close to power and handling equal to my modified 2005. Pulled the plug on a 2013 S5 instead since it had 325HP to the wheels in stock form and no turbo lag as it's supercharged...

I agree the interior is nicer in an Audi (and it comes at a price) After about six weeks of ownership I can say it has great power off the line and all the way to top end. That said, it is about a thousand pounds heavier than the subaru and while I haven't tested it fully, I'm pretty sure a wrx/sti would beat it in the twistys. As far as reliability, I have a couple friends that have had Audi's, some have had multiple problems and others have had dependability, even after modifications. Too soon to comment on my own cars reliability and as far as modifications: it is much cheaper to mod a subaru...an S5 exhaust (parts only)will probably cost me more than complete stage two did for the wrx (TBE, Cobb AP) including installation. There are also a lot more choices for modding a Subaru...and you can't beat the Subaru sense of community (nobody in an Audi is giving me the wave, ever)

I think there is more fun to be had with the Subaru. However,my wife has been bugging me to get a "grown up" car for a while (I'm 54yo) but I still think the wrx was the most fun I ever had driving since I stopped riding motorcycles. Maybe after some more time (and mods) with the Audi I will feel the same way, but right now the jury is still out.

Summary: Audi=expensive, luxurious, fast (reliability unknown) and Subaru=economical, sporty, fast (and definitely reliable)
WRX drove like a jet ski, the S5 feels like a power boat.

I just picked up the 2015 S3 with the Stronic and it has nothing on the 6MT S4 I sold. I had zero problems with my S4 but the S3 is the first model year here in the states so I am going to cross my fingers and hope for the best!

My friend who briefly owned a GTI commented on this as well. He said he would wave at other VW drivers and get scowls back, but if he'd wave at the Subaru drivers he'd always get a wave back! He traded it in for a WRX after the clutch went in 14K miles.

Yea, the VW community blows like that. Also, with the MKVI and VII GTIs I've noticed lots of older people driving them. My wife used to make fun of my "old man Outback". Now I make fun of her.

I drove the S3 a few months ago, it was a snooze fest.
